Movie Review 1-18-08 AKA Cloverfield
Alright then, it's time to start the new year with first big film of the year...Cloverfield.
EDIT-Oh yes, if you have not seen it yet. When you do, stay for the end of the credits! You will hear something at the very end, and I'll tell everyone what it is in a week.
NOTE-This review will contain Spoilers. So my quick "Spoiler Free" version. It's not perfect, but it's a really fun film to start the year and unlike other "First-Person" films like Blair Witch...this one can actually pull off some good scares.
Ok, we all know this is pretty much a "Giant Monster" film. But done in first person perspective like Blair Witch Project and George Romero's upcomming "Diary of the Dead."
After seeing Cloverfield I can say they made the right choice on doing it in First Person Perspective, to me it makes the film seem more real. It shakes, it goes in and out of focus and goes on the fritz sometimes. That and it shows how people react to a insane event like this.
Plain and simple, it starts off great with a distorted screen like something was broken. Then we see text saying this was a object found in area formerly known as "Central Park". That alone tells you something BIG happened, and we are about to view the choatic tale about to happen.
Throughout the film they actually show two different tapes, one of the main character Rob filming his Girlfriend waking up and going out on a nice trip to Coney Island where the girl has never been to.
The second tape is the main event, a party being thrown for Rob since he got a nice job in Japan. His best bud is filming throughout the whole movie, and I have to say he probably brings in the funniest moments with his commentary. (Especially bringing up the worst topics at the worst times like "Homeless people set on fire in the subway".)
Now the main tape is accidentally taped over the first one, so at points when total choas is happening...it flips to the bright and happy day Rob is having with his GF.
But of course, when some drama happens at the party, the shit hits the fan...and boy does it ever!
This is not your normal monster, this is a monster that strapped on a pair of Dick-Stomping Boots and goes to town like nothing else. It chucks the Statue of Liberty's head, it sends skyscrapers collasping to the ground, it breaks the Brooklyn Bridge apart, not to mention it releases nasty parasites that are really fast and if you get bit by them...your fucked compleatly.
However the action is not exactly non-stop, it pretty much follows a pattern of the characters travelling around, then choas, more travelling around and making crazy descions, more choas.
It's pretty much, stop, go, stop. Until near the end where it's get's wild for the rest of the film.
I have to say with the characters, some characters most people will like...however they make stupid cliches like stopping and trying to see what's making that strange sound instead of running like hell the other way. I gotta say though I love the cameraman since he had the best commentary for the entire event.
As for another positive, they never went into any explination on where the creature came from and why it went ballistic on the city. It's better leaving things in the unknown.
Another thing I liked, was you never knew if they really killed the creature or not. Because they did nail it with a lot of bombs as the group was leaving by helicopter, however the creature gives the biggest scare by popping up really fast and attacking the copter which made it crash to the ground!
So overall, it was a good film in my opinion. While it wasn't perfect, it was a fun way to start the new year for movies.
Oh yes, try not to cream yourselves Trekkies. JJ is making the next Star Trek film.
