PCA TV Trope Meme Part 3.5: Melanie And Arthur
14 years ago
As always, all you gotta do is find character-related tropes which are relevent to your characters, and justify/explain why they work with your characters. TV Tropes is right here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p...../Main/HomePage and I'd recommend people do it, it's fun, gives readers more insight into your characters, and you might learn that your characters are more stereotypical than you think. I sure did.
Figured that since I've been using and developing the pair so much that they probably deserve to be next up; but since they're not in a proper group of four they're only half a part of the meme that I've done so far. But dear god they have a lot of tropes. Honestly, I've become rather concerned as to whether Arthur is cliche or not thanks to all his ones.
Melanie:
Tiny Guy Huge Girl: Her relationship with Arthur is exactly this. She’s almost double his size!
Pink Boy Blue Girl: Melanie wears the pants in her relationship (or lack thereof) with her little manservant. It’s pretty obvious on looks alone.
Like Brother And Sister: Melanie’s demands of her Minun ‘partner’ and Arthur’s respect for his comrade, along with their size difference would probably make most assume the pair were related like this; Arthur as a little brother to Melanie. But they aren’t. And Arthur’s older than Melanie; albeit barely.
Pettanko: Melanie is flat-chested, a point she is rather frustrated by.
A-Cup Angst: ... especially thanks to the fact that both of her female teammates (and dormmates) in Team Roadbusters are rather buxom in comparison.
Beserk Button: Melanie’s rather masculine appearance; especially when she’s compared to other girls. She has it worse than Alicia, and is rather paranoid regarding peoples’ thoughts on her appearance; usually outputting her frustrations over the fact on Arthur by getting mad at him for so much as talking with other girls.
Tomboy: She’s no Ladette like Alicia; whilst Melanie is sporty, somewhat blunt and has rather masculine hobbies she isn’t interested in drinking or being a bloke. She’d much rather just laze about for the day, getting pampered, rather than go out and get drunk or swear all the time, unlike the aforementioned Arcanine.
Ojou: Type 2. Melanie was brought up in luxury and being surrounded by servants. She isn’t going to give up her belief in her superiority just yet.
Tsundere: Type A. She’s generally pretty harsh on everyone and has a pretty fiery temper, is actually fairly nice once she gets used to things. Arthur seems to believe she’s sweeter for the most part though; despite her obvious abuse of the little boy.
Creature of Habit: She loves her luxurious life as it is, and wouldn’t give it up for anything, despite how boring many would find it.
Inferiority Superiority Complex: Melanie sees herself higher than most thanks to her childhood in a luxurious and upper-class society. She has quite a bit of trouble dealing with other people in the PCA; unable to deal with the fact they are on equal standing as her. She keeps her self-esteem by putting down others, particularly Arthur, thanks to his lower class upbringing.
Not A Morning Person: Not without a long, warm bath, a backrub, a satisfying breakfast, all her work being done, a clean set of clothes, all her books packed and ready, and her timetable properly set out.
Jerkass With A Heart of Gold: Whilst Melanie is generally a bit of a snarker and makes her belief in her superiority known to everyone she meets she really isn’t as mean as she seems; generally put on such a selfish persona in order to try and fit in with teenage society in her new culture.
Cool Cat: Well, she definitely thinks so.
Cats Are Snarky: Given her clueless sidekick Melanie is given a lot of fuel for her sarcasm and general snarkiness; and gets along quite well with anyone who can manage to keep up with her wit.
Cats Are Superior: Thanks mostly to her childhood Melanie thinks herself to be the world; or at least says that she does. Arthur certainly agrees, but he seems to be the only one.
Mistress And Servant Boy: Her relationship with Arthur, obviously. Albeit without the teasing. And most of the care, too.
Does Not Like Men: Melanie has had generally bad experiences with males; albeit only minor ones; and has a general dislike of most masculine traits as a whole (rather ironic given her somewhat tomboyish attitude). This is probably the main factor behind what made her become a lesbian, really; rather than any strong sexual attraction.
Arthur:
Tiny Guy Huge Girl: As noted already, this is pretty much Arthur’s relationship with his boss. And pretty much every other girl he knows, given his size. Especially notable with his crush on Ruka; seeing as she’s about three times his weight as well as being far taller.
Shrinking Violet: Arthur is very, very shy. Even more so than Zeke.
Guilt Complex: As one would expect from someone brought up as a servant, who is part of a family of servants who have been servants for generations… and generally to people twice their size and strength too, no less.
Extreme Doormat: Arthur would never complain about his position, and definitely not about other people.
Battle Butler: Arthur is generally a relatively subpar fighter, taking a highly supportive role thanks to his personality; and is only really in anyway effective when he’s supporting Melanie. However, if anyone tarnishes Melanie’s life (in a dramatic way, not just a typical irritation, and only if there’s no proper reason for it), he will gladly fight to the death on her part. And when he’s in a mood like that, he’s quite the foe thanks to his strong and precise usage of Thunderbolt. But in general he’s far more proficient with weapons than he is with his moves; as he’s been taught plenty about being a bodyguard as part of his training as a servant; despite most peoples’ assumptions thanks to his timidness and weak physical state.
The So-Called Coward: Arthur is quick to flee from bad situations, particularly when he considers himself to be alone; but if it comes to protecting someone else directly or indirectly he isn’t afraid to face any odds.
Submissive Badass: As said before, Arthur is very willing to fight to the death simply to uphold Melanie’s lifestyle, and is quite the opponent with his spears of lightning. He’d never show these skills in typical fights though; appearances are very important to him. After all, what sort of servant would go about boasting about; let alone showing his superiority?
Cute Shotaro Boy: He’s pretty much this for the most part, especially appearance wise.
Undying Loyalty: To Melanie, and anyone who she’s told him to serve whom he gets along with. He’s only slightly less loyal to those he doesn’t get along with yet has been ordered to serve, though. Unfortunately this loyalty also leads to him believe everything the people he looks up to; which pretty much makes him utterly closed-minded at the best of times.
Happiness In Slavery: Naturally, since he was brought up in a culture based around the fact; although it was really just thanks to the fact that the lower class had simply gotten used to being the serving class; rather than having any actual satisfaction in the process. Arthur enjoys serving people though; though he can be fairly unimpressed if anyone apart from Melanie mistreats him in the process. He doesn’t mind not being appreciated, though.
Yes Man: To everyone, as per his duties as a servant. He tends to be a bit less of the type to compliment his master/s constantly, but consistently recognizes his inability to reach the expectations of them. Well, at least he thinks he’s not worthy. And unlike many ‘Yes-Men’ he’s actually honest about his compliments for the most part; thanks to how easy it is to impress him.
Hypercompetent Sidekick: In comparison to Melanie in most people’s eyes, at least. Arthur’s far better with household chores, basic tasks, and simply dealing with people than her, but pales in comparison when it comes to fighting or understanding (let alone actually knowing) Western culture.
Sharp Dressed Man: What kind of butler/servant/wannabe bodyguard/adorable midget would he be without a suit?
The Dulcinea Effect: Subverted. Arthur’s always straight on the case when it comes to serving female ‘superiors’ (i.e. everyone) but seems somewhat less enthused about aiding men in comparison. However, this is more due to having been around Melanie with her slight sexist attitude for so long; so it would make sense that it would be passed onto the boy who admires her so.
Stoic Woobie: Well, not really. He is pretty much abused by Melanie and screwed over by his society; but he never angsts about it; thanks to how he was brought up to think; rather than any full attempt to hide his emotions regarding how Melanie and her race treat him.
Precocious Crush: Although Arthur’s age isn’t technically far from hers, Arthur’s crush on Ruka is a pretty clear case of this, thanks to his naivety, appearance, and, y’know; the existence of Dante. Though in his defence he really is head-over-heels for the girl; even if she doesn’t quite realize it.
Cutesy Dwarf: He’s pretty much a midget for a sixteen year-old. But given that his folk were pretty much bred to be servants it’s probably just an effect of adaptation to the role. Or I’m just making up nonsense handwaves to have more short adorable boys. Meh.
Legal Jailbait: He’s cute, naïve, short, is highly police and subservient, likes his suits, and is often simple-minded… and he’s sixteen.
Older Than They Look: See above.
Ride The Lightning: Arthur can turn into a bolt of lightning as needed; although he tends to avoid using the ability; firstly because of how potentially dangerous the transformation could be to him (Melanie can be a bit trigger happy with her lightning; and with Arthur’s electric form in her stores…) and because it’s logically fairly uncomfortable to be in such a metaphysical state. It doesn’t help with transportation as much as one might think, too; what with the way most wires branch off or actively use electricity at some point in their paths.
Knife Nut: As mentioned earlier Arthur is quite well trained in lethal self-defence; logically preferring knives since they can be excused by their domestic uses; along with their easy-to-conceal nature. And Melanie is all too happy to let him cart them around on the inside of the front of his jacket; ignorant to the boy’s somewhat… unstable nature.
Chubby Chaser: An unsurprisingly subtle quirk in the Minun’s nature; and one that only really Melanie knows of but definitely doesn’t approve of. His crush on Ruka isn’t solely thanks to her personality, despite how it might often appear.
Incorruptible Pure Pureness: More because he’s oblivious to darker options or temptations than he’s particularly idealistic. Lacking in education and experiences has it’s ‘advantages’.
Pose of Supplication: Well, duh. He’s utterly submissive, a slave, and a wimp. It’s pretty much inevitable that he goes into the position on occasion; regardless of the severity of the crime he demands himself to atone for.
Casual Kink: Melanie has quickly learnt not to go to him for fashion advice, since the answer is always the same; at least when a woman is involved: wear a suit. Of course, he doesn’t have a clue as to the true nature of his interest in suited-up girls…. yet.
Peek-A-Bangs: As a symbol of his shyness and emotional vulnerability, I guess? It just seemed cute at the time in my mind…
Curtains Match The Window: Again, more coincidental than anything; but then again pretty much everything about Arthur is blue anyway. Sort of inevitable given his species, I guess.
Fantastic Arousal: Arthur’s ears are… sensitive. Very sensitive. Not quite actual arousal, though; since he’s a bit too mentally and emotionally naïve; but enough if rubbed give him enough pleasure to essentially paralyze him. Though this is sort of justified; since it was bred into his kind as a sort of emergency brake; a way to essentially paralyze a rebellious or foolish slave immediately. And such sensitivity works both ways; too; yanking on his ears is conversely incredibly painful for him.
Innocent Inaccurate: Arthur is fairly smart and understanding when it comes to most things, despite his rather backwards origins and thinking; but is technically somewhat psychopathic as he can’t quite understand death; despite reacting fairly conventionally to other kinds of suffering; apart from his own, of course.

Though you might want to bold the names of the Tropes, It makes the overall thing hard to read.
