A PHD is held in much higher regard, because of the time and knowledge it takes to obtain one, people with the title of Dr. are well respected generally.

People who have a PHD are respected. It is not so important what they studied, because receiving a PHD is very difficult. You have to study for 8 to 10 years or even more.

そうっすよね、まぁ。大学の教授になる目的とかいうところなら博士ほどの学習が必須なんでしょうかと思うけど、それ以外の仕事にはあまり有益ではないと思います。やはり専門によって違うのでしょうかね。

日本の多くの人はそう考えていますね、研究職に就く人は取るけど、博士自体にはあまり意味がないという風に。
僕は獣医学を学んでいて、解剖学の大学院に誘われているのですが、将来大学職員や研究者になるつもりがないので悩んでいます。

It honestly depends on what you want to do and where you would like to go. A PhD. is held in higher respect, requires more school, and a lot of time/effort. It is the highest that anyone can go in any field. You job access becomes very expansive with a PhD. even though a Dr. title will get you many jobs, you will be open to do more research jobs with a PhD. (from my understanding).

Anyone who holds the title of PhD or Dr is held in a high respect (I live in USA) but we see anyone with a PhD as experts of the experts.

And as I've said, your work is limitless in your field of study and you can even work on research projects and obtain grant money for your efforts if you so wish to pursue.

I am currently in a PhD program for Industrial Engineering, and I can tell you that here in the U.S., a PhD usually means that you are a leading expert in your field and that you conduct research either in an industry or academic setting. Going for an M.D. usually means that you practice medicine rather than conduct research. M.D.'s are generally paid more, but both M.D. and PhD's are the highest respected honorifics in the community, as both are refered to as "Doctor".

in Japan, it seems people don't pay respect to PhD so much.
So, it was wonderful that PhD are paid respect as M.D. in the world, but somehow, It is truth.

I'm from the US, and I have a Ph.D. I get a fair amount of respectful flattery from people who learn that I have that degree, but I don't usually mention I have it to new acquaintances because I don't see the need to. Most of the people I know don't understand more than the slightest bit of what I do for a living and because of that I don't value their respect for my job and my credentials. Don't pursue a Ph.D. for social prestige, because you will receive very little of it unless you go out of your way to tell people you have a doctorate, and ironically those people are not well respected among other Ph.D.s.
