Go commission these people - and roleplay rant!
Firstly, I would like for you guys to have a look at these two people who are open for commissions!
-
madame does amazing work and is open and needs more business. She's offering anything from full paintings to cute chibi keychain sculptures to digital art!
-
forgottenscales, who did my spinning icon, is open for a few more spinning icons! Go pester him, I know a few people have mentioned to me privately or publically that they love the little spinning Oni. xD
I had a few people interested in my roleplay rant on my last journal which I've decided to go ahead and write. Only now that I think about it, it basically just sounds like me whining. So I'm going to try and write this as amusingly as possible, because these things don't really make me OMGFURIOUS.
I'll start by saying that I've basically been in the 'dragon' fandom in one way or another for thirteen years, at first from playing a dragon video game (Drakan: Order of the Flame, online for the PC... anyone else? I was Fireblood!), then by moving to the otherkin community and finally settling into the furry community. Roleplaying was a big part of all of that.
I suppose I'll first talk about something I touched on briefly in one of my scrap submissions - magic.
We all want our characters to be awesome. And since we all love our characters, none of us want our characters to ever die or be in danger of dying. So I've noticed that a lot - a LOT - of people have these... weird... ultimate Mortal Kombat type finisher moves that they can just pull out at the drop of the hat that can all pretty much oneshot their opponent. This usually runs along the lines of 'controlling' something, like ice or lightning or fire.
Now me, I like to fight. I like to be confrontational. So forgive me if I'm rather abruptly put off by your 'No, no fighting... nah, nah, roll over... no, please stop... no OKAY FINE I WILL SUMMON LIGHTNING TO DESTROY YOU'.
If magic really IS a major part of your character, then it shouldn't only come up when your life's in danger. I like to fight. I'm NOT going to be all 'omg I kill u and ur charrie is dead forever'. And if you do use it, it shouldn't be the end-all-beat-all trick that I'm sure you're intending it to be. If you must use magic, use it responsibly - leave an out for the other person, make it have severe consequences for your character. Otherwise, I swear that I'll ignore it and blame it on Oni's Patented Anti Magic Aura Cloud That Follows Her Around Like She Stinks Super Bad.
I'll just touch on one more thing, since it reminds me - realism in roleplaying.
Kind of runs along the same thing as magic. We all want our characters to be the biggest, the best, the brightest, and the fastest. Unfortunately... that's not quite how it works, and I'm not entirely certain people realize how utterly unimpressive it is to me that my character - who cannot fly, as she lacks both wings and magic - can get outflown AND outrun by basically any dragon. I agree - it makes sense that Oni could easily be outpaced by a flying creature, although how you're managing to make your 10-foot-tall dragon fly as fast as a White-throated Needletail (the fastest flying [as in NOT DIVING] bird, at around 105mph, if I recall correctly) is beyond me. But when your dragon lands on the ground and decides to have a footrace with Oni - who I've designed based off of various running creatures - and you manage to take off at 118mph despite having just flown insanely fast - really puts me in mind of a Wile E. Coyote vs the Roadrunner cartoon. We all know that the cheetah holds the record for top landspeed, at 70mph. I put Oni at having around a 65mph burst or a 45mph sustained. It makes no sense to me that you, a creature that can fly insanely fast, can land on the ground and also completely outrun. And please don't use size as a difference - I know that as you're undoubtedly larger than she, you have a longer stride. But I really doubt that even dinosaurs managed the 118 you're pulling.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is - don't be afraid to give your character weaknesses. THOSE are what make you believable and memorable. So you manage to fly fast with your huge wings? You probably won't fare so well on the ground. Or you're awesome on the ground? Your flying's probably going to be compromised. Even down to personality! I honest to God hope that no one who's roleplayed with me confuses Oni's persona with mine - Oni's an arrogant bitch, to put it bluntly, because it pleases me to portray her that way. She's an amazing animal, and she knows it - she'll preen with flattery and rage at insults. She likes to argue and fight.
I guess, to an extent, that's me, but exaggerated. xD I'm just saying, we can't all be generic 'wise, suspicious of strangers but loving to friends and family, honorable' personality trait'd critters. It's more FUN to play a flawed character! Try it! It's your FLAWS that define your character, not your strengths.
I hope I managed to make people at least think about some of the things I've said! I do love to roleplay - but I'm also picky, and many of the things I've mentioned tend to turn me off. I'm willing to try roleplaying with unrealistic magic-weilding superdragons, but I can't say it's the best time I've ever had. ;]

FA+

magic and realisisism. I'm sorry but if I get snuck up from behind and shanked I'm a gonner for sure >_>
and thanks for the ad lol
To this day I hate spinosaurs with a passion because of that dude.
tis why i dont RP! I would be a mad motherfucker
and I'm not in the least creative with writing :<
Douchebag: *Comes and bites Oni in two, then runs off*
Oni: Uh... okay.... *Bleeds*
...
Oni: *Leaks lifeblood onto the forest floor*
...
Oni: *Body finally stops twitching*
Someone else: *Takes Oni's bones and puts them away*
I guess they wanted me to shut up or something?
I know where you're coming from. Since I normally do not rp as a dragon, I don't use magic or wings either (however I never used my raptor-speed to my advantage). So I have given my character limits and weaknesses.
We should rp sometime! x)
And the scary thing is, you'll probably do it again in another five years looking back NOW. ;.;
When I made Sky. the only thing he had going for him was a bit of anti-magic which I threw out the window in recent years. He's durable, but he's slow, simple-minded, can't fly, and doesn't even have a breath weapon. A character doesn't need crazy ass powers to be interesting, I think. :)
I'm pretty sure one person even measured their size in AUs. WTF.
Just once I want someone like "Oh yeah, my dragon's just a simple blacksmith. Uses fire breath to help smelt ore. Yup."
Oh my god that'd be cool.
My character is weak enough as it is. But you can punch me as much as you want, I'll just squeak and giggle. >'===='> Squeak.
Do you REALLY need a Psi-Blade from the 9th dimension forged in the heart of a neutron star with elven magic spooged all over the edges?
This is why all of my characters are non-combative. :D And if they're somehow powerful because they're an angel of some-kind, well, then they're pure defense.
-Laughs- Oh, I love your examples. So much.
And more dragons need to be 'normal', yes! I wind up feeling almost boring half the time. Which is of course ridiculous, even the most simple of dragons is still a freaking awesome growlfy dragon!
Could not agree with this more! xD
Breath weapon?
Nope!
Special powers?
Nope!
Psychic?
Nope!
Special in any way?
Nope!
A prince or crazy back story?
Nope!
He's just supposed to be a runty, large winged example of his race. XD I make for boring RPs. $$
NOT BORING.
AMAZING. <3
But you know nothing about my RP!
wut if i rpd liek dis o yez taek it oni murrrpurr
Although now it is not in the good sense. =(
Was my first online game ever too! And it also steered me towards otherkin and stuff afterwards, haha. Seemed to be a stepping stone for a lot of people!
I also hate when someone already has a predetermined thing they want and skew the RP with every action to get to it, no matter how dumb
I dunno, sometimes I like a more linear, story-based RP where it's already decided where the setting is and keeps kinda steering it along a plot.. but that's my own personal preference. I love more longterm RPs.
I knew somebody who was hard to RP with a long time ago. Made her character very god-like, so it was frustrating to ever RP.
I've been adding more things to my persona that characterize myself, like my disabilities. My dragonself's kin are two sets of wings (the second set is more like psuedo-wings), but StarSeeker, being a Halfblood (half dragon and half tiger drake...which is not related to dragons on her world), does not have the second pair of wings. She is capable of flight, but not true flight, since it's an effort to get into the skies, much less being able to make quick turns and do aerial tricks and whatnot. She probably is able to glide and fly in higher altitudes, but not as far as an average dragon. If anything, she prefers to walk and run. Not too sure about her running speed. But she is noticeably better on the ground than the air.
Her height is the same as a tall male giraffe (20ft). And since Star is a Halfblood, her magicks are anywhere between weak to nonexistant. She's almost incapable of breathing fire (only happens if she's enraged or having a huge panic attack, but even then it's no more than a small fireball and smoke and a whole bunch of coughing). Since she does have some Earth dragon in her, she is capable of working with plants/plant magicks, but again it's pretty weak. She is also capable of healing others, but that does have consequences.
And this is cliche...but she does have a pearl on her forehead that holds the essence of her goddess...She only comes out though if Star is near death. This also holds a consequence if She has been "awakened" in Star.
Star is also part Desert Dragon. But she's also part tiger drake. She has special webbing between her toes, but they're designed to walk on sand, not for swimming, so she is unable to swim (despite the tigery part).
But what she lacks in magicks and power, she has wit and cunning, and is a pretty good hunter (just don't expect her to share the food right away). And since her forelegs are shorter than her hind-legs and her forepaws being more hand-like, she's able to do intricate and detailed things.
Personality...umm...similar to my own. ^.-.^; Except probably a little more territorial, aggressive, etc...all-in-all more "feral" than me.
All the while she is a golden dragon (specifically orangish-gold), a species on this site that more-or-less have large egos and are almost god-like.
Any gold dragons who read this, no offense. Not saying all of you are this way, but it's mostly what I've seen. I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.
Also, she is a gold Desert Queen dragon (another HUGE cliche for dragons, I know). But does she act like one? HELL NO. She prefers to act like any other dragon in her world. She doesn't even like being treated like a Queen. Oh sure there are some nice things to being a Queen (good and easily available food, pillows, lots of shinies), but like me, equality is her thing. Also...the whole "Queen" idea is suppose to symbolize one of my disabilities in a sorta subtle way...sorta.
Also, anthro Star has no wings. I decided to leave those out when in anthro form.
WAIT, another thing you forgot to add! Age! For instance, Star's kin has a maximum lifespan of 300 years (although they'd be lucky to reach this age, what with diseases and stuff). I've seen some dragons on this site who are like, several millenniums old, or are immortal. Doesn't sound too realistic to me.
TL;DR: I'm an gold dragon who has flaws that are similar or symbolize my own flaws and disabilities. And I have no shame of this. I'm proud for who I am.
I'm sorry I wrote a lot. I had a lot to say. ._. If there's anything that sounds confusing or needs questioning I would do my best to help.
But I'm 100% with you, Oni.
I think that's really cool the amount of thought you put into your character!
Only RP I do now is kinda for more detailed conversation - I still get warm fuzzies when I get the chance to snuggle up with friends that are too far away to do so in person - or of the titillating sort with special few, good for inspiring artwork. A few of my pictures with Annu were inspired that way. >_>
And sometimes I feel as though if I ever stop entirely my writing in general, IMs to keep in contact with friends, and such, will turn to that of AOL-Itis, or Cancer of the Semi-Colon, as I like to call it. I'd love to have the patience to write stories to keep my writing sharp, but... I dunno. Unless it's going to benefit anyone other than myself, it's time I'd probably rather put into something else. I might give it a try one day, though.
