The terror of NaNoWriMo
Why? Why did I do this to myself?
"Only 1700 words a day!" I thought, completely disregarding my OCD need to make every word fall perfectly. There is no such thing as a first draft, only a PERFECT DRAFT. Of course, I joined shortly before the event kicked off, with no real layout or plan for the story. Now that I managed to claw my way to the 10,000 word mark, I've exhausted the singular idea I had for the main story. Every day I keep considering giving up. The quality is horrendous. The flow of words is hackneyed. My vocabulary all shrivelled and smouldering, blown out from the first few pages.
It's 3pm, and still no ideas.
Sure, it's a fantasy story. I could slip into one of the many overused main-plot tropes and just write for the hell of it, but then it wouldn't really feel like my own story any more. It would just be purely going through the motions. Though if I'm perfectly honest, that's exactly what NaNoWriMo is. Writing, against all your quality-control instincts, just to punch giant "FUCK YOU" holes in your mental blocks, and lay the skeletal groundwork of your story-to-be. But can I really be bothered to edit this steaming pile of anus, once the month is over?
Hnnngh.
Perhaps it is time. Time to visit TVTropes, and find something just obscure or maladjust to my plot that it just might work.
But going there is a real dance with the devil. There is no such thing as just a short visit.
OH GOD NOW IT'S 3:10PM
