*facepalm* I like pizza just as much as the next guy, but Congress is just being a dick at this point. Trying to label pizza as a vegetable just to oppose Obama's plan to promote healthy eating at schools is asinine, desperate, and downright stupid.

And, of course, to do so because a lobbyist gave you a "campaign contribution" to encourage you to add that language to an entirely unrelated bill.

Though I got nothing to complain about pizza, the one thing that bothers me is why would Congress involve something as mundane as food and diet as an issue. Veggie politics, thats what it is! Tch, not that its going to change my views or anything, it's rather amusing actually. Well, just enjoy a slice of Pizza Hut or Sbarro pizza, no need to bother yourself with all the fuss about it. What's next? Congress declares cheeseburgers as dairy products? Anyway, personal dietary preferences is personal, not political. Hmm..... might as well remind ourselves that in the end, the only thing we'll concern ourselves with this when ordering pizza is....... with or without anchovies?

Because the meals in question are subsidised with tax money. Specifically federal tax money, which is why Congress gets to set the standards. In theory schools could simply turn down the funding, and get complete control over their lunch menu - but in practice, not many schools are going to turn down a little extra money. If the feds pay for lunches, that's money the school can direct elsewhere.

They do claim that the healthier meals the administration wants would cost more than what they serve now. Or at least, they claim that it's true. :P

Claiming that its true? When it comes to politics, truth of claims are, in my opinion, often ambivalent(at best). Can't do anything about it except give it the benefit of doubt; this debate is one more drop of water to add to an ocean brimming with issues. *Coughs* Politics.

Here in the netherlands we..you know..bring our own food to school. And snacks actually cost..you know, money. But I'm assuming that's only because we're a freedom limiting, communistic country ;)

I brought my own lunch when I went to public school. :P But some inner-city families sending their kids to school actually can't easily afford to give their kids homemade lunches, so the school provides.
