For the Galaxy, look up rooting methods that exist for the specific verison of the firmware you have; serial number included.

For instance mine is: settings -> About Phone -> Build number -> GINGERBREAK.GKG3

Not all rooting methods work on every phone and sadly, anyone that could possible give you any information would just be looking it up on google anyways :D

As for hacking a tablet... if you can get your mitts on an HP Touchpad somehow, that's beautiful for modding; especially since you can follow the current development of Cyanogenmod's release. I'd say look at modding websites (Again, cyanogen is a good one to start with) and pick your tablet based on the ones they support.

yeah. i use xda for all my modding needs. Right now I'm looking at just a custom kernel flash, just to give me root, various versions of cwm and some other basics. Gonna be a dumb pup and start to test out nightlies too :p As for UI I honestly dont mind gingerbread so rooting alone will be enough, maybe i will grab CM in the future.

As for tablets, the barnes and noble ereader is what im looking at. Runs the same 800ghz processor as a droid x and can run a 90% honeycomb or an overclocked 1.2ghz cyanogenmod, plus its less than 200 bucks :p

I got a Samsung Galaxy S, puppy. Back before I got Android 2.3, it was unhackable sadly. Nothing worked. But now I might be able to do it... we'll see. I don't see a need for it right now but we'll see in the future.

What they do is they release the phones and OSs in Europe first, get people to come up with all the hacks, fix the holes then release them here >.<
