Real Cat Behavior
As I'm trying to get work done.. in the background I have one Animal Planet and the show.. Fatal Attractions. One thing talking about animals connection with humans caused me to tune in more and listen. It was one about big cats. I have no relation to this as I don't own any big cats, but I do own 3 domesticated cats. I'm more of a cat person then a dog person... and I love reading about cat behavior. Sometimes I wonder... what exactly do cat's see us as? They don't think the same as we human's thing... However it's clear they see us as something different then everything else in the world. Maybe because we are unlike any other animal?
I do see kindness towards humans as a learned behavior. Since feral cats fear humans. Still.. it is a very odd attachment if you think about it. Cats act towards humans, like a kitten acts towards its mother. Crying when it wants something. As cats get older, they stop meowing for attention. Their communication between other cats is done mostly with body language. However, the hissing and spitting, followed by the low rowl... are some sounds cats make towards each other. But the moment a human comes into the picture, they almost revert back to their kitten days and start meowing at us. Some experts say that cats don't love their humans.. and I think that's not exactly true. They might not understand love in the human form, but they do have attachments formed for either other cats, or people. They don't always interact with us only when they want to. There are a lot of times when I am in another room and feeling lonely. I will call out my cats name.. and he may be sleeping soundly in another room and once he hears me calling him. .He gets up and comes to me. Maybe to see if I have something for him, but even when he sees that I don't have a treat or food, he still jumps up on the bed or couch and snuggles with me. My other female cat is very attached to me. She grooms me all the time. My 3rd LOVES to have conversations with me. I will meow.. and she meows back. All of them hate not being able to get into the same room I am in. I think cats do many things to show they are fond of their human owners and have strong attachments for them. And the more new things I find out about cat behavior, the more I love learning about how meaningful it is the way my cats treat and interact with me.
I dunno.. just rambling my thoughts really.

Point being, I know exactly what you're getting at, more or less.
But I have seen cats form attachments to just one person. My one girl cat is very loving to me.. and no one else. It's strange.. but since i am the whole who loves on her the most.. she sees me as the human to trust. She has been very aggressive to other humans before.. including my mom whom she has lived with for years. Yet If I go in and get her when she is upset.. she instantly calms down and stops trying to lash out. So i think its very clear there is attachment in cats. Ands I love hearing about it!
But as much as they do things like that.. There have been times when I asked them to do something for me. Like come snuggle. Or join me in another room. (they love coming into the bathroom with me... sorry for the TMI.. but it's weird that they love to do that!) I will ask her to come over and jump on the couch with me.. and she will. So i guess it is a give and a take.
Cats Tails are a prime source of info , a few tail talk signs are - When entering a Room with people , or being greeted by name the cat will Straighten it's tail , hold it up & bend or hook the tip .. this is a Respective greeting . if they swing it slowly with a slight fast snap or just a lazy sway .. they are at ease & happy ... Now if they wag it like a dog .. prepare for some claw marks LOL
The one thing that puzzles me with my eldest female is this one tale habit she does that i find VERY odd for a cat to do. She will be laying next to me, and i'll start petting her. At times adding the tail into the petting. After a bit, she will start flicking her tail around and of course.. i think it means she's annoyed and so I stop touching it and just lay there. Well, she will then actually move her tail and lay it in my opened hand and keep it there till to close my fingers. She slowly will pull the tail out, but then laying it back down in the exact same spot. Right into my open palm again. And hold it there.. until i repeat the action. Sometimes I will hold down on her tail to see if I am really annoying her, but she does nothing. I open my hand and she slides it out again, to repeat the action. After a while, when i stop the game all together, she stops and moves her tail into another spot around her put stays put. Never once during this game.. as she gotten really pissed off at me.. and left. Even when i get rough a bit. It's like a game almost. She puts her tail in my hand and i'll close my hand on it.. and she pulls it out. NOW since cats flicking their tails around mean annoyance... I find it funny that she does this. She is never annoyed to the point of leaving my side after this act or even during it. Maybe she trusts me and knows I wont hurt her tail? I honestly don't know .I have never had a cat do that before. The only reason I think she knows it's a little game is that.. i will watch her pull her tail out of my hand, and flick around around and lay it down some place else close to my hand. But she instantly moves it.. keeping it flicking until it lands in my hand again.. Only when it's in my hand.. does she stop flicking it. I always found that to be weird for a cat to do. Maybe my hand is always is the most comfortable area for her tail? Or maybe she is just playing a game with me? i honestly have no idea how to read that behavior!
I think it's kinda that the caretaking thing a little bit, but if you're nice to the cat, the cat will be nice to you.
Hank loves to chat with me.
He'll do squeaky meows, I'll say something, and repeat.
He brings his toy mouse to me all the time, and while he does like to play fetch, alot of times he just wants me to hold onto it like its a gift.
If you reach over to pet him, he'll happily close his eyes and lean into your hand before you reach him yourself.
Dean is a little cuddle monster.
He'll cuddle with me in the mornings the moment I wake up.
He also cuddles with me while I'm on the couch.
And while I'm cooking, he's always laying on the kitchen floor behind me with his belly exposed to me, just watching.
Dean only kneads when he's super affectionate and you're petting him, and he'll only knead on you.
Hank on the other hand, kneads the moment his paws touch soft fabric like a mink blanket.
God forbid they can hear me but can't get to me.
They tear at doors, walls, and floors trying to find a way to get to where I am, even going so far as to mash their face under the door as much as possible to meow loud enough they're sure I can hear.
Yet, they don't do this with my husband.
There's also that practice of paw-kneading. It's used by kittens to coax the mother to provide milk - normally adult cats grow out of it (mine hasn't) but they can be encouraged to continue it (once again - perhaps they see humans as their perpetual "mama cat"). I call it a kitty-massage. :)
And I recently found out about cat head bumps and he does that to me all the time, so if that isn't love I dunno what is. It might not be love as far as humans know it but I do think it's some kinda love.
Although I treat mine as humans. So it may be different if you treat them strictly as pets.
Eclair, is as needy as they come once she gets to know you. Meowing for attention, batting be let on a lap. Sleeping in the same room as her people. But she's shy and skittish around new things/people.
Vash.... still confuses me. He had his gorgeous puffy tail amputated because of cancer, but he still wiggles his 'bobtail' for emphasis. He's sometimes cuddly. Sometimes bratty. Poops on the floor (behind the door when he's mad). And if you really get him mad he'll pee in your shoes or on something he knows you pay attention to. But he'll still wait for people to come home just so he can be nearby so if he's in the mood for cuddles he's not far.
Cats can be sooo different, but at the same time so similar. It's always fun to hear cat stories. There's always some silly story of what they got into or some random thing they did. Hell... Cat videos on the internet! x3
He's also very vocal. He chats back and forth when you meow at him, he meows for attention. He also only lets me scoop him up for any period of time and gets fussy with my roommates.
One of the funny things the cat does is meow at me after I sneeze.
He also tries to get us all out in the living room by pestering us or going to my other roommate's door and meowing.
He's got a lot of personality and he really loves us being around.
Heck, I even play fetch with him using a rubber thimble.
