Well... THAT was certainly weird!

Because I am a Slowpoke, I've never fully played through the original Half Life. I think my experience in the game is about an hour's worth, tops, even though I've completed HL2. I decided to give it another go today when the strangest thing happened.
For reasons unknown, the game accessed my computer's disk drive, which had a music CD in it at the time. It then began to play a random track! Here is the most accurate portrayal of the experience I can muster. Pay no mind to the video on the left. It is literally the only vid on youtube that contains the track that played in my game:

When I took the CD out the music stopped and no further odd things happened, but geez... that was the last thing I was expecting!

Wasn't the original Half Life out back when game companies were trying to protect their content by making you have the game CD in the drive while playing it? Perhaps a bit of that old code still lingers, and looked for the game CD while you were playing. Has it happened again?

Ooh, that sounds very plausible. I'll try again tomorrow (perhaps with another cd) and see if the same thing happens

I have to agree with this. I remember the original Quake did this, as did Mechwarrior 2 and a number of other old school games. It took less processing power to play a CD track than it did an MP3 in those days. It wasn't just about copy protection :)
