The Incredible Melting Man
So today I buffed out my movie collection with 12 new titles. (Bringing my count to 1020!) One of the ones I plucked out of the bargain bin was this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076191/
The Incredible Melting Man, (There are those who call him TIMM.. although he should be 'The Uncreditable melting man, as the actor who plays him is not credited as playing the character Steven West, but "The Incredible Melting Man"! Seriously, it's in the title sequence!) is about an astronaut who returns from a mission to Saturn's rings with a wasting disease that compels him to eat the flesh of people. If this movie hasn't been MST3K'd, then it should be, it is pure comedy gold!
It really got me, as just the night before I was chatting with a friend of mine over Google Talk about 'Melt Movies'. a tiny sub genre of horror-comedies spawned by Street Trash ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094057/ ), and perfected by films like Body Melt ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106450/ ) I just happened to come across TIMM by accident, I didn't even know it existed!
I tell you, it takes a lot of time and effort and testicular fortitude sit through swamps of crap movies, but on the odd occasion you stumble across the occasional film that transcends God Awful and becomes 'So Bad It's Awesome' it really makes the time it worth it.
Some films need awesome back story and underlying issues to transcend the GA barrier, like "From Hell it came" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050414/ get it's back story here: http://www.headinjurytheater.com/article57.htm )
Others do it by sticking to the formula and holding no punches ( The Brain: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094794/ although an honorable mention in this category has to go to Deep Rising http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118956/ not bad enough to be bad, and great fun!)
Others, like Plan 9 From Outer Space and TISCWSLABMUZ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052077/ and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057181/ , I'm not typing the latter's title out in full!) do it through pure bloody-minded persistence. TIMM falls into this category.
Great fun, It's times like this that really make me look forward to studying film at uni.... I love the things so much, wading through the shit is seriously worth it...
OK occasionally someone reminds me of Catwoman, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327554/ yes, that one... )but I'm sure everyone has something abut their hobbies they hate!
