DSlite and Pressure Sensitivity
Today I bought myself a lime green DSlite to replace my totally busted DSi :B
Clerk: We only have the DSlite and 3DS left in stock.
me: I'll take the DSlite
Clerk: Why would you buy a DSlite over the 3DS...
me: Because 3DS doesn't have pressure sensitivity
Clerk: Oh. Why would you need that?
me: Because, uh, well...
It was sad enough that i had to blow in the corner keys to get them to do anything (because it wasn't quite making contact, so they had to be damp... don't ask) but I pulled out my DSi this morning to do some art and it wouldn't even read my cartridge.
Sorry guys, it turns out I was totally wrong about DSlite and DSi being the ones in the nintendo DS line that has pressure sensitivity! The DSi (and by extension, DSiXL, 3DS) does not have it. I just never noticed because for the most part I paint with pressure sensitivity off, and colors tries to simulate sensitivity by starting off with a thin point and getting larger. I just attributed the brush not getting smaller when I lift the pen to that screen protector that I had on the screen. But having spent a few minutes doodling with the DSlite you can kinda notice the difference :B
For those of you looking to download colors now that they've taken it off the site, follow the link below:

Also, I don't think the Nintendogs/cats is using pressure sensitivity, but the microphone. I've noticed, when on the home screen (which responds to mic input) that if I tap about as hard as he was, it picks it up quite accurately.
Now, that's not to say it isn't using pressure sensitivity, just that it's a possibility.
3D porno
The future will be amazing.
anyways that's neat. I wonder how hard it would be to get your own app on the eStore. might as well contact the makers of Colors! and ask.
I see Colors sort of like how I see oekaki, honestly. It can be something to tide you over til you get to your program of choice, unless your thing is either whatever or oekaki in general
There's something entertaining about drawing on these little things.
wut?
(but would never actually say it)
Better not risk it though. I have this paranoia about my friends touching my things for a reason. I usually go through extreme measures to make sure it's all hidden, or I'm alone when working on it.
I just thought it was funny. Also I hate 3d :c
I've always wondered how you manage so well without pressure sensitivity - guess colours way of switching about the size (and opacity?) through a stroke makes all the difference. It seems almost impossible to me, but I guess the really important bit comes from just holding a physical pen, instead of messing about with a mouse.
Yeah I haven't drawn with a mouse since like, middleschool :p It's actually not all that hard to work with, but I acknowledge that it probably depends on how you paint/draw normally, some styles/techniques work fine with the DS's limitations.
I used to use a mouse as well, but I felt like I ended up relying far too much on filters and stuff that gives that icky digital crap look. I must say, I would absolutely love to see some of your old, pre-awesome days art.
Well holee shit, some clever browsing and I think I found it, granted that this is the right account.
Looks... much less gay. Still shows a lot of confidence artwise, too, and you do seem like the type of artist who would spend 6 hours on an oekaki image.
hate looking back at it now
The DS Lite and the so-called DS Phat (the ollld one) have pressure sensitivity.
Technically, all analog touch screens have pressure sensitivity just due to the nature of how they work, but the libraries used to access lower-level code necessary to read pressure instead of coordinates were the same between the DSL and the ollld DS, but different on the DSi. And, with Nintendo trying their best to block homebrew with their system updates, most programmers just kinda gave up on making libraries for the low-level stuff. .__.
Make me sad because I used to make a sh*tload of stuff for the DS and DSL that wouldn't work on the DSi. :/

Too bad it comes with a dinky little stylus. Also, digital painting in Photoshop without a GPU :y lol
Hopefully the technology gets better sometime soon, because I'd love to do figure drawing/whatever with a digital device.
I know what you mean though. I lug a 10" Prime and an 11.6" Samsung Slate 7 which is kind of like a 12" Cintiq with an entire computer smooshed into it weighing just under 2lbs with a six hour battery - Wacom pressure pen and everything - and the main reason for the Slate was for drawing. I have a 16 hour bus ride I do every other week and my thought was 'I can draw on the bus!'
Then I realised... I'd have everyone around me seeing me drawing pron. Oi.
So I tend to use on the bus to block out the drawings and do 'safe' details, then finish the 'unmentionables' when I got home.
Therefore, a DS Lite will fit the bill just fine. My current DS Lite has the same shoulder problem, and it's like I have to deeply kiss the shoulder buttons and breathe into it so it starts working again for a good while or so.
Frenching is uh, the best yet most embarrassing way to go about it. Don't get me wrong, I love my DS with my CycloDS homebrew cartridge, but uh not that much.~
Also, super happy you got my Street Fighter Collab comment. Feels so good around my dick gurrrl, thhbbbpppt!
My friends give me such weird looks when I press my lips against the shoulder buttons or (sometimes) lick them. And I always have to explain to them why I'm doing this. It also kind of kills the momentum/mood when I actually do feel like working on furry porn.
And totally :B that flash was such a large part of my college days, I quoted that with some of my frends for the longest time.
I think we just related to each other profoundly, that's all too common with our DS woes. <3
I would have the same conundrums when trying to pop in a NES, SNES, or any cartridge based game in fact. Licking down the chamber against the receptors, or breathing hot against it. It's like I had to take my games to dinner before playing them! It did teach me persistence and patience though. I totally understand an annoyance like that totally breaks the flow when shit just stops working in between, and you have to hassle to even start drawing. Hopefully your green DS Lite doesn't have the same problem.
Hah, dude, I keep on forgetting you're a year or so younger than I! It's insane how awesome those days were when we could watch all the coolest shit on Newgrounds. I'm still in college though, I heard you got your gig in a really weird way.
Here's some footage of some sort of sensitivity with the 3DS...

This may not be BONA FIDE PRESSURE SENSITIVITY, but I don't know, dude. It'd be a real bummer if 3DS Colours didn't have it! (They're trying to get it out this month, it's basically done, they're just working on a gallery system according to what they said back in December or something).
It seems cool that you can draw in 3d, but to me it feels kind of gimmicky. The things I draw on my DS for the most part just go straight to FA or as a sketch to work off of in photoshop anyways. There's not really any use for the 3d function :o
BUT you said they are making the same exact program for the 3DS to download, so maybe I'll just wait for that (any release date yet, or just waiting?)
Sorry for making you answer all my stupid questions :(
I think enough gunk got into the shoulder buttons that they depress and then just don't come back up. I've been debating with myself whether or not I want to risk flooding the shoulders with distilled water.
But it also has a Sailor Mercury sticker on the outside, so it's a fair trade.
I'm sure my friend has many Sailor Moon stickers lying around somewhere….
