When a pegasus and a unicorn, both with very strong earth pony backgrounds, love eachother very much, then there is a small chance that their foal will be born an alicorn.

OK... I'm sure the question will never actually be answered, but I can't believe that the new episode just hinted at canonizing my thoughts on the matter.
