Old movies that would benefit from a remake
14 years ago
What movies do you think could benefit from a modern remake, provided they didn't stray too far off the original film's story and premise? I have three I think could really work.
THEM!
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (the movie that the TV series was later based on, starring Frankie Avalon)
Panic in Year Zero.
Any others you can think of? Must be Pre-1970's films!

FA+

Yeah if they remake it, then Peter Jackson should direct and Steven Spielberg should produce (or the other way around) so it stays as close to the original as possible and it still fun (Jacksons King Kong Remake is really, really good). Otherwise forget about remaking THEM!.
Have this awesome image in my head of an open battle between the ants and military. Maybe when they're storming the anthill.
Anyway, I'm really hard pressed to think of any movies that need a remake. Like, my first instinct is to start listing off a lot of really old monster movies. But after thinking it through, I decided that nobody has anything to gain from remaking movies like Frankenstein, or Creature from the Black Lagoon.
It might be nice to see another adaption of The Island of Doctor Moreau that doesn't completely suck, though.
Ditto for The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, ignoring the fact everyone knows that the title characters are the same person and the novel treats it like a shocking twist (which it was at the time), meaning a faithful adaption would make some audiences feel like the movie was treating them like idiots. Another thing about the novel is Jekyll isn't the main character (neither is Hyde). It's Utterson, Jekyll's best friend and lawyer. Hell, screw making a faithful adaptation that preserves the twist. Any Jekyll and Hyde story which keeps the novel's main character would be welcome.
Also, I'd like to see a 'Gone With the Wind' where the existence of slavery wasn't glossed over.
Attack of the puppet people and Dr Cyclops.
The Road Warrior.
Robot Jox
I can't remember the other one I had in mind...
No.
This Island Earth, mebbe?
There is nothing today that could possibly replace Barbara Eden's backside!

The Island of Dr. Moreau.
To me, it had an interesting concept. With today's CGI and movie technology, and perhaps a better writing of the story, I wouldnt mind seeing it again.
Just dont make it 3D >.<
I'd be interested to see a genuine remake of the silent METROPOLIS film--hopefully retaining the creepy shiny-tall Gothic and political vibes.
But that's only cause that is one of my favorite stories evar and it needs more love.
Oh! And for YEARS I've been half-dreaming of a remake of "The Third Man" with Liam Neeson as Harry Lime.
I'd like to see "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" re-told as less of an allegory for Cold War fears and more of an allegory about the mind and soul-destroying character of popular culture (you wouldn't have to change many details).
Someone re-did "The Lathe of Heaven" as a TV-only movie a while back, but it has so much more potential than that.
Some of the re-makes that have been done could have been promising but were actually really terrible, including:
The Omen
The Italian Job
Flight of the Phoenix
War of the Worlds
The Time Machine
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Island of Dr. Moreau (the 1990s version with Keanu Reeves)
Speaking of animal-people and were-creatures, would love to see them remake Cat-People too. This time without the "derp they turn into normal panthers!11" crud... or the implied incest. Was really disappointed in the last attempt to remake it that didn't take advantage of the increase in FX to make something more... cooler.
Would love for them to finally remake Creature From The Black Lagoon... but so far all the rumored scripts sound like potential shit.
