Let's talk webcomics

Well if you're like me and you LOOOOVE webcomics, you'll probably have heard of the two webcomics I'm about to completely gush over. Both these comics display outstanding story character development and amazing creativity in their own respects and I consider them staples of the webcomicing world and would even go so far as to say anyone who wants to make webcomics should first give these a read. I'm speaking of course..... of Two Kinds and Sonichu- Buuuaaaah had you going there for a bit didnt I? No actually it's Carribean Blue and Las Lindas- Buuuuah and again!~ No the two comics I'm referring to are Skin Deep and Housepets.
Skin Deep like Housepets is a story with no REAL protagonist. Each character is made just as important as the other with their own interesting story arch's that keeps you interested as they develop. The characters are probably the best part of this comic and that's saying a lot considering I have a large amount of respect for every piece of this work of art. Each character is colorful, well designed and pushes the envelope as far as conventionality goes. If not read it for the story read it for the interesting characters and their witty remarks.
It, also like Housepets has a rather clever and intelligent sense of humor. It's witty and really contrasts to the more serious moments in the comic. And that's really how comics should be. A comic that's all humor you will soon get bored of because it has no real substance. A comic that's too serious, you will soon tire of the story because there's no comic relief to it and reading it is far too intense for you to feel any real connection to the characters.
As far as story goes there are a vast multitude of different arch's for each character each flowing seemlessly into the other without inturrupting with little dialogue boxes telling you where they are and what's happening because it tells you where you are with the art. No Chapter exhibit's this more than the first chapter of "Exchanges" in Skin Deep, which remains my favorite simply for the backstory of Jim and Lorne. Shutup I can be a fanboy too.... you just won't take my "critique" as seriously.....
Art shouldn't really matter. As long as you have a good held together style that remains relatively constant then you can make a good webcomic. But for what it's worth both of these webomics have amazing taste as far as style goes. Skin Deep a lot moreso than Housepets but Housepets is not without it's shining moments. Housepets current style is lovable cute and simple endearing to watch as compared to how it started.
Both these comic's layout's differ greatly. Skin Deep has your typical multipanel layout with a bunch of varying sizes and shapes of panels whereas Housepets is more the kind you see in a newspaper and remains static in it's layout and that's completely fine. You don't need a complex layout to have a good webcomic. I'll admit Housepets does tend to be a lot less linear and resorts to one joke per update but it has a story and you will notice it among the jokes. It's rather genius in it's simplicity.
Anyway both comic's get a definite GO READ THIS NOW rating. Here are the links to the very first pages: Skin Deep by Kory Bing and [url=http://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/06/02/when-boredom-strikes/Housepets by Rick Griffin[/url]

Of course not. Actually as far as I know the manager of BtL just went on temporary hiatus for Christmas. :P We'll be picking back up soon. I wouldn't ever quit because some nerd in his bedroom doesn't like how I draw. xD
