Phallus and Areola?

X3 Areola works if people actually know what that means (it IS less giggle-inducing than nipples); phallus, on the other hand, has always made me think of a) a fake or otherwise penis-LIKE object, or b) a desperate attempt NOT to say cock. So I dunno about that one. I almost feel like cock is less snicker-worthy, so I've kept it even though I've considered saying "phallus" at times...

This is a possibility. The thing is, on pictures where the character isn't monotone, it's hardly necessary to even specify which area I mean, but with pics where the character is monotone I pretty much have to figure out how to say which part of the area the swatch is for, lest they pick the darker black by accident, etc.

I can see what you mean from the Ref Sheet you just completed....
Stating "Non-Furred area 1 etc" would mean you'd have to either label the area with the number, OR just put an 'arrow' there anyways, and at that point, why bother labeling it ......

But yeah, when a character has the same color for non furred bits (like yours truly) then "Non Furred Areas" works....

I have seen people use 'flesh' to label those bits.
Shaft or member would work for cock as well.

Or you could just not label the swatches. Like for the sheet Lime did for me, it's not labeled but you can figure out what color goes where. o:

I've considered this. it works fine if the character's individual colors are really disparate, but on a monochrome chap like Elim, who I just posted, some of the colors are SO close to one another that you can barely tell just by looking what the real difference is, which is where the necessity of labeling comes in.

I am trying a "comic book style" layout for some sheets that would take the swatch and attach it like a speech bubble to the area it applies to, with or without a label. I'm set there, but for the other styles I'm not sure if it'll work. I know there will be times where I have to have my standard "over to the right, with labels" swatches.

i usually use 'skin' or 'flesh' - 'delicate bits' works sometimes too.

you could use 'genitalia' or 'flesh', i've seen those before
or i've seen some where they weren't labeled at all, though those ones can be annoying if the colors aren't obvious (i saw one that was like that, and i was searching ALL OVER for one of the colors...it was a couple of streaks in the critter's tail or something like that x3)
of course, i'm being somewhat hypocritical there, since my own ref doesn't have a labeled palette x3 but i also don't have bits on there, either XD

"Flesh" is a great alternative when the paw pads, cock, nips, etc. are all the same color. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to make that work yet! And your dilemma is exactly why I feel like it's important to figure out labels I like, because there's nothing worse than a ref sheet with swatches that are not a) easily grabbable (like they have gradients in the swatch so that you aren't actually going to have an easy time of pulling the color directly with the eyedropper tool) or b) unlabeled and not easily discernible as to which color goes with what. I want to make sure my ref sheets are not just a pretty picture, but an actual tool for other artists.

The buyer is paying for the elimination of guesswork and frustration on the part of any future artist he hires, so if I leave any room for confusion I'm not doing my job. That's kind of why I thought I should just go ahead and ask others here at FA, because part of my obsession with organization lately has been to totally nail down and streamline my ref-sheet making process. :D It's fun, and it'll be relaxing to feel like I've gotten it all down to a science.

another choice could be 'adult bits', though i'm not sure how professional that sounds x3 or you could just ask the commissioner how they'd like them labeled.
it's nice to know that you actually enjoy doing ref sheets, and that you take pains to make them as clear and concise as possible. i think that a lot of people would rather just get them done as fast as possible, and don't take in mind that it is a tool they're making.

I wish I could say it's entirely selfless, but I just take pride in knowing that I didn't take the easy way out, that the buyer won't have remorse over one little thing here or there that wasn't perfect. I often do just ask what they'd like, but sometimes the delay in communication this causes is very troublesome for me, so I was hoping I could stumble upon a universal panacea of words to choose from!

ah yeah, i can see how having to wait on an almost-finished ref because of communication was slow for a couple of labels would be bothersome. having a sort of 'preset' set of words would be helpful in that sort of situation. and it's definitely worth taking pride in, plus that way you know that people aren't going to have to read a ten-paragraph description under the picture of what's different! X3

You might try "foot pads" or just "pads". "Paw pads" does sound a little awkward. I've heard them called "pugs" but not on FA.

I don't know of a substitute for "nipples" unless you want to go with "nips"...which sounds even dumber. Does anyone use "teats" or "dugs" anymore?

How about "penis"? If you want to get technical, you can call it a "pizzle", provided it resides in a sheath.

Ive always seen people do the whole "flesh, eyes, fur, markings, nails" labels.

You could use simply skin for the non furred parts and genitals for... well... the genitals - this last one basically goes for every "inside skin" on this site.

When I am asked to put the names I simply put "Flesh" and throw in all the colors for the fleshy parts, and let the ppl reading to the math =)

As someone who writes porny stuff for fun, it occasionally gets really distracting. But there are remarkably few good euphemisms for the various naughty bits if you don't go with the clinical...

Hell, I love these words when I'm writing erotica. But when it's supposed to ACTUALLY be clinical on a ref sheet... it feels silly to be either blunt OR evasive. There's so little middle ground.

if you don't wanna refer to things like a character's cooch, mansausage or the nipples, you can just say 'flesh' on the ref sheef. and just say 'all flesh'. or if their mouth is different, then list it seperate. its what i do :p

skintone or flesh seems to be the consensus, but it's tough if the actual cock or nips are a different color than the rest of the skin, which has been the case in a good handful of my latest pieces. so i'm still left with the dilemma of what to call specific bits.

So really there's no need to have "genitals" or whatever since you can just color that on the ref sheets..

It's just rough when there are four different varying shades of "very dark grey". X3 They end up having to color pick from the pic, which defeats the whole purpose of the swatches.

Ohhh yeah that's not too easy, but i guess you could go with "Nethers, or Intimate Areas/Areola" etc. if it needs to be there.

I think using 'penis' instead of 'cock' is probably appropriate. It's still 'vulgar', but it's a medical term and therefore acceptable.
