I love it when someone tries to correct my writing. I had someone go through and mark each portion of a sentence where I had the word "and" with a red comma. He failed me for it with the excuse of him being an English Major.

This just goes to show that not all English Majors are hot shit. XD

As for your story... I understand that all too well. If I hear one more person saying that the death towards the end of Hamlet was symbology<their word was wrong too!> and not actual deaths, I am bound to go shoot myself.

No, that's true. Just because you're an English major that doesn't necessarily make you the world's expert on writing. One thing I've found is that you can pass all your college classes without necessarily understanding everything you're supposed to.

I must admit, I do find some of these misinterpretations (and not only of Shakespeare) to be quite interesting. I suppose a classic example is from Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun of York." The interpretation is entirely different if you leave out the second line, so much so that "winter of discontent" became synonymous with a period of widespread strikes and industrial unrest in 1978/79. I'm sure the shorter version of the phrase now makes more people think of that than of anything to do with the House of York.
