I always thought Gollum looked memorably creepy in Ralph Bakshi's adaptation.

Now that version I have not seen. I'm still rather fond of the one from the Hobbit animation from 1977, since he was the first and he looks most amphibious to me. :D

The question is, is it right to 'contaminate' my childhood memories by rewatching Gollum, now I'm a pervy adult?

I had - well, still have - a children's picture book based on this adaptation, and I always found it fascinating.
Being a children's book with big text and pictures, it cut away a lot of the story, and actually it ended with the miraculous return of a certain prominent character (I know everyone knows, but still...), and I never knew what happened in "Part 2" until I saw the movies.

I had never seen these images in action, though. It's nice to do so.

I concur -- the music is the best part of the Rankin-Bass version (and I do like the entire Hobbit special, not just the music). I also love the dwarf and elfin music, and the fact that Glen Yarborough (from the Limelighters) was the minstrel who sang "The Greatest Adventure" and "Frodo of the Nine Fingers."

Don't know if you've seen this already, but somebody made a fan video where the "Whip" song was dubbed into footage that was cut from the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies. It's an improvement, in my opinion:

Wow, most excellent. I had not seen that fan clip. You're right it adds much to the movie version and it was pretty nicely spliced in too.

Yeah the old Rankin Bass stuff had soul too and visually beautiful animation as well. I love the style of the characters indeed. That old production holds many fond memories for me. :)
