It's really touching, beautifully presented, the soundtrack is lovely, and it made me cry a little. (STRONG MEN ALSO CRY, MR LEBOWSKI!)
I watched The Last Unicorn last night (yay Netflix) and I liked it a lot for the same reason. Simple, stylised, effective animation, and straight-up fairytale archetypes but with a more earthy, genuine feel than Disney or even Pixar. Less anodyne, less ironic, more mythical. They both remind me a lot of Russian animation.
Hey, there's a whole load of great animation coming out on the net these days, especially from students, huh. Anyone have a tip on good blogs/tumblrs/whatevers that showcase da good stuff?
