also, raising money helps non-profits stay running. shit still costs money. gaining profit means doing more than breaking even. non-profits have bills to pay, projects to fund, and shit to do. NPR raises money every year. Every person on staff volunteers, but you have to pay for air time, for places to broadcast, repairs for equipment, electricity.

so when non-profits need money, it doesn't mean they're getting to keep it and get bonuses for all the CEOs or something. It means that it takes a lot of money to actually do things in a capitalist society.

Yeah, I re-posted that video until I started hearing the other side of it. Right now, I think Ugandans want to fix their own problems. The word "colonialism" got thrown around and well... what other reasons do foreign white people go to Africa other than for tourism, to ravage it for quick profit, or to "fix" it for warm and fuzzies?

well, the IC actually appoint Africans to leadership positions in their programs. They look to their counsel to decide what's important and what needs to be done. So, it's not really just a bunch of white people going over there and telling everyone what to do.

As for the naked video, I'm wondering if it's actually him. He didn't seem anywhere near as flamboyant as that guy in his dialogue/sections of the KONY video, there's no public response yet about whether it was him or not... Seems like it might not carry much validity at this point. I'll wait until I hear an actual response from the other side to pass judgement.

Nah, it's about halfway though there's two comments. One is like 'Even though the threat has moved out of Uganda, other parts of Africa are still unsafe..', and I think it's later mentioned again through 'Even though Uganda is now safe from his regime, we believe that all children anywhere should have the right to go to bed without worrying about...'

At one point, there's even a motion graphic showing where he and his army have moved too. (Watched this in class the other day so it's still fresh in my mind.)

I was forced to watch the video in my class; it's a class called media and social change, and we're supposed to be talking about generating awareness. After the video, I talked a lot about how he was obviously using sympathy, and how there was no actual factual information there. People looked at me like I'd grown a third eye; how can you not see that these kids are like, suffering, man, you're a heartless monster.

I am totally not surprised to see this, not in the least.

To give you an idea, the guy uses his OWN child as a method of sympathy, asking him baby questions like 'who's this man?'.

It's horrible, and the entire tone of the thing is infantilizing, like he's talking to an idiot. Which he was...

pathos, yes. It's a strong thing, and this video was ALL about the pathos.

and there was factual information, it was just sort of dumbed down. they explained this actually. it's an introduction to the cause; you don't load a video with specifics and expect it to be interesting and effective enough to go viral. The more detailed facts are available, however, and if you get more involved, they are there for you to access.

they don't tell outright lies, they just simplify it to make it easy to understand. you don't introduce someone to quantum physics with equations that don't make sense. You start with a general idea and build on it from there.

China starts making business deals and trade agreements, giving financial support, food, materials, whatever, In exchange for oil.
then here in the US... KONY 2012, an excuse to get american soldiers into africa.
and it won't end with kony, there's HOW MANY crazy fucks like kony across the entire continent? and the various nations have to pay us back for the support somehow. we accept visa/mastercard, oil, and minerals.
