Furry Weekend Atlanta 2012 con report
I'm on my way back from FWA right now, typing this on my phone while Lhexa drives.
Due to throwing out my back the Sunday before the con, I was really worried about this one. I still can't lift anything and can't really walk without pain. Without my usual sales team behind the table I seriously considered cancelling the trip.
Luckily my back became less agonizing and Lhexa offered to accompany me on the trip since he was on spring break anyway so I started to reconsider. Then I was really surprised and happy that more friends offered to spend their weekend helping me behind the table.
Thank you so much to Lhexa, Sparf, Mangi, Alflor and Rechan for all your help loading, unloading, picking all the merch for customers and generally helping me carry everything this weekend!
What could have been a wasted weekend and a physically painful one for me turned out to be not quite as painful due to lots of pain meds and lack of movement and rather than a wasted opportunity, I had a decent time and sales were up over last year.
I really thought sales would be down this year and I was hoping to at least match last year. I never thought we'd exceed last time for a number of reasons. I'll be back with FurPlanet next year and we'll likely get the same number of tables.
Not much to write about on a day to day basis. Most of the con was spent behind the table. I basically acted as cashier and source of info on the products while everyone else ran around and grabbed the various books from stock for our customers.
Saturday night I visited Jaspian's room party briefly before recording the third episode of KnotSheathed with Kyell. I like that this is becoming a tradition for us which I hope to continue next FWA. I feel like we have a good chemistry for people who don't podcast together on a regular basis. They're a much different flavour from KnotCast, but I hope the listeners enjoy these shows as much as I do. After the show I hung out in the cafe for a short while with Kyell, Kit, ICWolf, Hux, Kenket and Laura G. Fun times and late night pie. I eventually got to sleep around 3am.
Sunday we had to say goodbye to Rechan and Alflor as they were leaving early. After a pretty quick and efficient breakdown I took the remaining teammembers to dinner. Sparf and Mangi headed out to the airport that evening and Lhexa and I went to bed early so we could hit the road at a decent hour this morning.
I want to say thank you to the staff overall for putting together another fun and smoothly run con. I also want to say thanks again to Rama and the dealers room staff in particular. You guys do a lot of work I don't always see, but I know I arrive with my boxes of stuff and you all make my working weekend go as smooth as possible. So thanks for all your hard work.
I think that's about it for the con report. I'll just end this by saying I leave this con, as I do with most furry cons, with a renewed surge of creativity and the feeling of how much I love the furry community and being a part of it. The fandom is full of so many good friends and talented people, too many to name. This weekend in particular I was overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit and how willing everyone was to help out this old injured wolf. Thank you all and I'll see you again at FWA 2013!
