What Do You Say to Grieving Non Believers?

If you know someone who’s grieving a death, and they don’t believe in a God or in any sort of afterlife… what do you say?

This article makes many great points and suggestions. I had to share this. I will also link it on my profile page. I hope people will read it if I ever have to experience the death of a loved one.
The thing that irritates me the most is when people say, "They are in a better place." I didn't know that being lifeless in a casket that will soon to be in the ground is a better place than being alive and with their loved ones.

I tried that once. I got hit with a pillow and kicked out of the house. :/
and that was just him getting dumped, not even something serious.
It seems as though the act of consoling people has almost always been framed in religious terms, as all the usual things we're taught to say involve God, Jesus and heaven, or some variation thereon, even if we're very, very secular, so entrenched in culture is casual religious belief. However, even though I consider myself a Christian, I tend to avoid being religious when I'm attempting to console someone. There are ways to reassure people that don't involve mentioning an afterlife.
