i just always assume everyone on the internet is male. if they turn out to be female, i'm pleasantly surprised. if they are indeed male, at least i don't have a letdown.

This started because I got an e-mail a week ago asking if I was female. I know what you mean, I'm normally the same... everyone is male until proven otherwise. But online I'm not looking for anything but either artwork to look at or info. So to be asked if I was a girl in an e-mail was ODD. And they based this on my artwork. The question itself is old as life for me as me and a friend talked about it a few times.

Is it the art itself or what the person draws and how it's drawn?

I guess everyone's male. I personally can't tell most of the time and is mostly wrong. :O If I were looking at my art from a different set of eyes I would think a female drew it... I have LOADS of female characters is why I say that.

See I knew I would be wrong, XD I'm 90% of the time are. I'm more shocked if I guessed correctly.

I had a friend that claimed he could tell generally. He based it upon how males vs females drew their own and the opposite sex.

If you can go more in detail.. that would be awesome. Like what does he look for? Line sizes? Poses? I wanna know now. * STARES* :D

Sadly, I don't remember (or he never told me) his full method. I do remember a bit of it though.

He claimed the drawing of female characters were generally easier. Male artists tend to draw over-sized, almost gag boob sized, breasts where female artists downplayed them.

Male characters were more difficult though since he hadn't found as much of a split in how the groin area was drawn.
Some girls drew it over-sized, though not as large as guys drew breasts.
Some guys drew it large, potentially compensating, while others downplayed it possibly for the same reason as girl did with breasts.

I'm with you though, I think line-work can sometimes give a hint. Similar to how girls vs guys handwriting is generally different. Though even that is not a perfect indicator as I know a female artist who is confused for male due to her style.

If you were to guess mine without knowing.. tho I think you DO know.. what would your guess be? And THANKS loads for the watch and answering the question. :D

Line style mostly. But I sort of cheated as I have access to more than a couple pictures. I can see your gallery, including your profile info.

I tend to use as many resources available to me when guessing things. Normally, though I just look at the art and make a quick male/female guess based upon content and line work. In addition to what I said above the other content drawn can sometimes be an indicator too. Girls tend to draw "cuter" things. Guys instead draw less cute things: fighting, gore, muscles, etc.

I liked toned characters, and not just guys. I like seeing girls drawn as more than the typical "pipe people" way a lot of artists draw them.

Least they have hands. I've seen artists come up with all kinds of ways to avoid drawing hands and feet.
