Upbeat songs that sound cheerful but have dark lyrics
13 years ago
Hey, everyone.
I was thinking about some songs that I enjoy listening to that have a lot of contrast between their musical content and their lyrical content. I really like the irony with them and it also makes the song more interesting or memorable.
What are some of your favourite examples? I'll list some of mine:
Detroit Rock City - Kiss
About someone who gets ready to go to a Kiss concert but dies in a car crash on the way there.
Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
I used to love that song as a kid and its chorus (doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo) sure was catchy. However, it's about someone who gets hooked to crystal meth and has a downward spiral.
Today - Smashing Pumpkins
Today is the greatest day of his life, because it's also going to be his last. A little more mellow then the other two I named but it's about suicide.
Any other examples you guys can think of?

"Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" by The Killers, seems like another surprisingly upbeat rape song, maybe it isn't but it sounds like it. "Mr. Brightside" too I've seen been interpreted in a anthro comic as about murdering his ex-lover's new boyfriend... made sense when you think about it.
"99 Luftballoons" is an anti-nuclear proliferation song, that's probably the best example I have.
"Fancy" by Bobbie Gentry is a nice country song, but once again, you look at the lyrics and it's about an underage girl so destitute she sells herself to work up the social ladder.
"This is what we've waited for. This is it boys, this is war. The president is on the line as 99 red balloons float by."
