- Abilities -
Dash ~ As a natural ability adopted from his own species, Paul is able to sprint at high speed, which is useful for evasion or approaching enemies that depend on ranged attacks. During a successful dash, Paul can ignore the weight of his armor, to avoid having it slow him down.
Medium Armor ~ Despite his low physical prowess, Paul has learned to wear chain mails so efficiently, that he can benefit from their defensive values without being slowed down too much. Paul will never be able to wear plated armors, and can only equip a shield, once he has become worthy of considering himself a crusader.
Shield Bash ~ Once Paul has obtained a shield, he can use it to bash opponents met in close encounters. It stuns the living and lower their guard, but functions as a blunt and devastating attack towards undead enemies, causing a great deal of damage in the process. This ability requires the promotion to crusader.
Wall Bounce ~ By using his excellent agility, Paul can bounce on walls to attack enemies from unexpected directions, penetrating their defense to cause maximum damage. This ability only works indoors, but if Wesley Lightweaver is present in battle, Paul can occasionally bounce on Wesley's shield for a similar effect.
Flail Mastery ~ Since Paul has specialized in fighting with a flail, he is able to ignore the weapons weight, to deliver swift and efficient blows. His flail has a decent effect when fighting living opponents, but it really shines when dealing with undead, since the spiked ball can strike skeletal targets with an amplified effect. Fleshy undead are less susceptible to his blunt attacks, however.
Divine Protection ~ When having stepped upon the path of light, Paul can use his limited connection with holy divinity, to enhance the armor of himself and his surrounding allies. Damages and dents will fade away, and the plates of armors worn by allies will be reinforced, effectively raising their defense in combat. This ability requires the promotion to crusader.
Champion of Shévolyn ~ The most essential requirement, for a person to rightfully claim the title of crusader, is to always act in the name of good. During times of crises, Paul can put his heart into a holy prayer, and beg the Goddess of Light for assistance in combat. If the Goddess Shévolyn answers his prayer, she will bless him with divine strength, that will empower him for a short period of time. His armor will morph into an angelic design and the chain of his flail will grow in length. Standing as a true champion of light, his strength, defense and endurance has increased significantly, but his dexterity and agility will be weakened. Once the blessing wears off, Paul will be left in fatigue. This ability requires the promotion to crusader.
- Background -
Back in his early youth, Paul lived a quiet and peaceful life, with his kind and loving parents. His father was a humble farmer, who only ever worried about growing crops at the field, that he could later sell for profit at the market. Paul was a highly independent child, so it didn’t matter much to him, that his parents were occupied with work all the time. He could easily entertain himself by exploring the woods and fields, along with his friends by the same age. His parents kept him somewhat sheltered from the worlds cruelty, raising him to believe that the world was much more peaceful, than it actually was. This lead to Paul being pretty naive at a young age, but he came to witness the harsh reality, when the town of Paravil experienced a violent raid of horned demons. This was years before, that the demonic empire joined forces with the legions of undead, and the demonic gate at Mount Kalibarr had yet to be sealed. The demons managed to penetrate the towns defenses, and broke into some of the poorly barricaded houses, including Paul’s home. Despite that Henry Drakemyre, Paul’s humble but noble father, had never been in combat at all, he was ready to defend his family once the demons broke through his front door. Armed with nothing but his rusty pitchfork, he attacked the beasts fearlessly, but was quickly slain by the far superior enemies. The only reason why Paul survived, was because his parents hid him in the cellar, where the demons never found him. But in the depths of the cellar, young Paul was traumatized by listening to the horrifying screams of his parents being brutally murdered by the demons upstairs.
During the next morning, when the royal soldiers of King Lionheart had successfully slain the demons, Paul crawled out of the cellar and broke into tears when he found the corpses of his slain parents on the floor. The intense sorrow lead him to flee from Paravil and escape into the woods, where he survived on his own by feeding on berries and beetles, and staying warm in dark caves during the cold winters. Two years later, he returned as a homeless and undernourished child to the town of Paravil, forced to live in the streets among rascals and thieves. After having lived so long in the raw wilderness, no one was able to recognize him, so he had nowhere to go and no one to count on. To avoid starvation, Paul’s reputation was heavily damaged, since he made a living out of stealing from stalls and snatching gold pieces from people’s pockets. Years passed on, he grew older, but things turned worse. The traumas connected with his childhood caused him to develop a severe depression, and the only way he could find to handle the sorrow, was to turn it into pure rage. When spending his few gold pieces at beverages in the local tavern, he often got involved in violent brawls that he started himself, where he mercilessly took out his rage on mindless drunkards. It was first later that he managed to see through the haze of alcohol, and realize that the only way to get over the past, would be to avenge the death of his parents. So he found the motivation to quit his foul habits of breaking the law, and pursue a more honorable kind of life, where he could pick up a weapon and practice fighting. He found strength in the belief that his parents were observing him from heaven, and he didn’t want to disappoint them, by getting involved with criminals and doing crimes.
By the age of seventeen, Paul finally felt prepared to join the king's royal army, and work his way up the ranks. But despite that he breezed through the training and became a great warrior, he failed to pass the final tests, and become promoted to be a royal bodyguard for the king himself. This turned out to be a frustrating obstacle for Paul, as it was his lacking physical prowess, that kept him from claming this noble title. But the winds of fortune slowly turned in Paul's favor, when he was discovered by the highly respected Wesley Lightweaver, a knight that passed the tests years earlier and became a royal bodyguard. Despite of Paul’s low strength and unimpressive body, Wesley approached the king and suggested to give Paul a chance, since he sensed hidden potentials inside him that could easily compensate for his shortcomings. The king was hesitant at first, but was eventually persuaded, granting Paul access to the noble title that he desired. This was the first time in his entire life, that Paul had managed to accomplish anything, that really made him proud. And from that day, the seeds of friendship had been sown between Paul and Wesley, which grew and blossomed through the next year of service. To everyone’s surprise, Paul turned out to become one of the few surviving bodyguards, that made it through the war against the united forces of demons and undead. So it was evident that Wesley Lightweaver did the right thing, by placing his faith in this young man from the streets.
Even after having put his criminal past behind him, and embraced the honor of knighthood, his traumatic memories still haunts him like ghosts from the past. He suffers in silence, and speaks of his past to no one. But deep inside his restless heart, lurks the sinister rage that he has build up over the ages, which occasionally shows its ugly face through sudden loss of temper. Paul has a tendency to draw hasty conclusions and come off as pretty judgmental, especially around people that are rebellious towards the law. Because of this, the situation would inevitably become complicated, once the notorious thief Gary Jenkins joined their party. This old lynx was known throughout the region, for having committed almost every crime in the book, and Paul feared that his parents would find it shameful to associate with such a rascal. Unfortunate for him, his naive friend Wesley trusts this criminal because of his bad reputation, and Wesley always gets the last word in every discussion. But that won't prevent him from always keeping a sharp eye on Gary Jenkins, in case if he was scheming to pull a dirty trick on the party, and stab their backs like a betrayer. Many foolishly suspect that Paul is the most inferior fighter on the team, but that is far from the truth. What he lacks in strength and magical capabilities, is compensated with a high rate of agility and dexterity. His attacks may not be impressively powerful, but he is able to strike fast and precise, often leaving his enemies unable to retaliate. For a knight, his defense rates are relatively low, especially compared to Wesley. But his natural swiftness makes him much more evasive, enabling him to successfully avoid attacks, instead of absorbing them. Despite of his dark past, Paul is a good man at heart, and deeply desires to protect the weak. But deep inside, he hopes to one day bring justice to the forces of evil, and ultimately avenge his devastated childhood. Maybe then, it would finally become possible for Paul to let go of the past, and move onward to shape a future of his own.
