Lapskaus, the healthy sister of the two, passed last night around 3:40 am.
I got them because a co-worker and friend didn't have time and room for them any more. A year old, and one (Jigsaw) already had skin tumours around her body. I didn't expect them to live long, but I wanted to give them a good life until that time.
Shortly after I got them and they had settled, Lapskaus starts getting sniffly and breaths very slowly, sleeping and resting most of the time. I changed from their wooden shavings to shredded newspapers, sine that might have been the problem. Two weeks later she's completely fine again with no sign of illness whatsoever. Meanwhile her sister Jigsaw continues to have her tumours and scratching the one on her head, leaving a bare and sometimes red area. Both are active and showing no signs of discomfort. I feed them regularly, they get lots of (SAFE) fresh foods, lots of cold and clean water. They have toys, I handle them daily and keep them stimulated.
Yesterday they would both come crawling right up to my hand even if there was no food in it. They knew me well.
And then I suddenly notice that Lapskaus is just sitting there, barely breathing, barely moving. I tried feeding her, giving her water... no response. She lost all power in her body and ended up on spasming herself to death a halfhour later.
TL;DR: The healthier of the two mice died very suddenly.
I knew I wouldn't have them for long. I will miss her, she was my favourite after all since she was a lot tamer and nicer to her sister. I'm just sad I had to watch her in pain and didn't have the guts to break her neck to end that pain.
I just hope her sister won't be too lonely.
