Never flown into Pittsburgh before? Also: Microns and flying
13 years ago
This is a partial reblog from last year: In my conversations with people about AC, more than a few have expressed dismay at the expensive cab fare from the airport to the con hotel area. If you don't know already, there is a dedicated airport to downtown express bus operated by Pittsburgh's city bus authority. It costs $3.25 each way, and runs every 30 minutes during the week. It's the only city bus that services the airport, so there is no confusion about which one to take. You'll know when you've reached downtown; the bus exits a tunnel and you're hit with a spectacular view of Pittsburgh. Get off at or right before Seventh Avenue & Smithfield (the bus starts to leave downtown at that point,) then walk northeast up Liberty and to the hotel and convention center area. When you see people with tails and fuzzy ear hats everywhere, you'll know you're going the right direction.

This might not be possible if you've got three "action packers" filled with your fursuits/snacks/whatnot, but you can take the usual suitcase and carry-on aboard the bus, no problem! Save the $30 cab fare to spend on comics instead.
Additionally, I've recently learned that you mustn't open Micron pens when flying in an airliner. I knew that Rapidograph technical drawing pens can't be opened, but Micron pens will also burst and leak if opened. EDIT: KTurtle left a kind comment below on how to avoid such a mistake: "The trick is to point the pen upwards when opening it, so that the ground-level-pressure air inside the pen can escape without taking the ink with it.
In fact, I've found it's a good idea to open pens point upward even after arriving at your destination, in case the barometric pressure is different enough from your hometown." Thanks, KTurtle!

In my case I fly into Pitt. and get a rental car (I'll actually be in town the Sun before the convention and the first couple days are a side trip to Ohio) but can tell you: If you're at Seventh Ave and
Smithfield, walk southwest on Smithfield to Sixth Ave and turn left. The OMNI is in that direction and the DOUBLETREE (me! C is for cookie!) is around the corner (near the US Steel bldg). For those staying there...
If you are headed to the Westin/the Con, Liberty Ave. is very close to the intersection you mentioned.
As you walk, the Toonseum, Furnando's, and Hanlon's Cafe will be on the left, August Wilson Ctr for
Performing Arts, and the Westin etc. is a block or so away. Again you will see many of us already there.
Handy map!

Conv Ctr/Westin: 10th and Penn Ave; Penn Pl and Liberty Ave nearby
Shuttle bus stop: Smithfield and 7th
Omni: William Penn Pl and Sixth (you will see a steady stream of Omni furs going up and
down William Penn Pl.)
Doubletree: Look for US Steel Bldg..hotel just behind it

I'm happy that my bus message reached someone new! Third party shuttle services are around $20 but they're not much faster or more comfortable than the bus.

Although I find it's still a good idea to minimize Micron pen use on a plane anyway, just to be safe. Not much fun dealing with an ink leak during a plane ride.
