I've broken windows.
Just putting up this journal to let people know, mostly for close friends.
No, it wasn't because I've accidentally hit a baseball into someone's house. I think I booted up windows too hard with my boots.
In all seriousness:
Windows just doesn't boot past the animation, it loops on forever. So I believe it's because of some system files being corrupt preventing it from booting. I had to force-power off the laptop cause it was extremely slow. The screen doesn't work either, probably something to do with the display driver, but I'm currently hooking it to an external monitor for now.
I'm currently booted up on Ubuntu via my thumbdrive, trying to backup my files before I reinstall windows. Man, Ubuntu is fast. My wacom tablet even works with it out of the box! I wish I could continue with this OS but I'm super dependent on many windows programs. (Sure, I love GIMP, but I prefer inking with SAI, Flash, and making music with FL studio.)
After that comes the dreaded part of reinstalling windows. :/
Man, this happens just a few days before my exams starts. XD
Technical help is quite welcome, like suggestions on how to get windows starting again. :3
What's your worst computer crash? Did you have to lose all your data somehow?
EDIT: My computer has been fixed anyway. :3 Changed the motherboard, all is well!

Dose your screen show any information at all?
And without seeing the offending laptop there isn't much I can offer in support.
I would have to reinstall it. I wonder if there's an easier way, since I can still access C:/ with Ubuntu.
And I know that you boot from the CD or DVD and at a point your asked if you wish to do an install or reinstall. Google you OS and 'repair install' that should get you going top a point.
and luckily had data stored on an external HD so I could reinstall easily enough...
The last one I had was my actual internal HD went corrupt, BUT luckily I was also using a 2nd internal HD to house most of the data, though it then took me the trouble of using a family members computer to piggy-back it in order to get the data off, so i could then turn it into the OS drive....
ANYWAY :P
hopefully you find some sort of solution soon!
I remember my very first external HD I got as a gift for college,
instead of 'backing up' everything i'd ever done up to that point,
I thought it would be a good idea just to simply drop everything on there.
And of course, a family member had to trip over the chord and send it crashing onto our hardwood floor....
poof...
like I never existed before college :P
Exactly my problem... Too bad WINE isn't ultra supportive yet...
"Didja turn it off and on?
"Yes, I did."
"Try it again!"
"Wait, what?"
"Your laptop is broken. Try rebooting it"
I'm sending my laptop for repair soon.
I'm running vista, I've realised the graphic chip has probably gone kaput, I have to plug an external display to see the screen and installing the graphics drivers leads to a BSOD each time (also related to the graphics driver, I believe).
So I'm just going to send it for repair and hope it'll work.
I'm not that deeply computer savvy to play with virtual machines though, perhaps I might as an experiment, but I'll leave that for after I recover my computer and have time.
As for my worst crashes:
I've had to format my HDD/reinstall Windows like 3 times due to virus and/or corrupt/missing system files
Had to replace a failing CMOS battery
Had to replace 2 PSUs
Had to replace a burnt 2GB DIMM with a crappy 500Mb one and buy a new motherboard a couple of years ago.
That's a lot of crashes. :P
have you tried contacting
I don't use virus software so I reformat every couple of years. The last one I had attacked my bios, so I had to rip apart my netbook and pull the power off the chip.
i'd suggest trying a repair install, it's worked great for me, but i think that's a vista and 7 feature, not sure. either way you'll wanna back everything up and if the screen won't come back after that your display might be dead =(
my laptop's display is dying, it flashes when i fold the screen, sadly i won't be able to fix it, but my best friend gave me his old netbook (that's way newer than that laptop anyway x3) so i'm fine now :3
It's back up and running. Thank god for warranty!
