It may be a generalized bug with Firefox. Try reinstalling it (my best advice).
Also scan for virii and malware. AVG free version is surprisingly good. Also get Spybot and A Squared, they're great spyware detectors (and both free).
But if you're seeing glitches in *many* programs, it's time for a clean install.
I had this exact same problem with Firefox.... here are the steps to fix them, but I suggest that you save your bookmarks first!
From My Computer, go to C:Documents and SettingsUserApplication Data
Here's the hard part for ya, haha... if you can't see Application Data, click on Tools, Folder Options, View, then Show Hidden Folders. Look for the Mozilla folder, and guess what you have to do next... delete it.
That's right, delete that folder. Sure, you'll have to go through the process of redoing whatever you had your Firefox set up as, but that was what I had to do in order to be able to save image files. Probably also good to uninstall and reinstall Firefox as well, but deleting that folder is the key factor.
Oh, and if your Firefox was also starting to act really slow in loading and such, if you do what I have suggested, you'll notice it go back to being fast again.
E-cookies aren't normally filling. =
