Yeah! doo dat. I've found out recently with being pretty open about stuff that the people with actual, entrenched negative connotations against furries are pretty rare; most people are just ignorant, and even folks who have seen CSI or read Vanity Fair or seen The Internet, if they know and respect you, are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt over the weird third-hand rumor version of How It Is. "Oh you mean those people who fuck in animal costumes?" "Well, there's more to it... blah blah blah" "Oh. That's kinda bizarre/interesting/boring/tame/crazy/kinky." "Yeah" "Whatever." That's been sort of the gist lately. I'm trying to make it a habit to be more forthcoming: my parents and pretty much all of my nonfurry friends are at least somewhat hep to what's going on and have heard me say the F word at least once. Gotta keep pushin, cuz by self-stigmatizing we're just making things worse. The more that socially adjusted and non-creepy people start actively identifying as furry, the faster we can do away with the notion that we're all awkward creeps.

Yeah, it definitely helps when normal people identify with something rather than simply the really hardcore nerds of any fandom. And I think that all around the internet is making people more accepting due to the sheer volume of different opinions, hobbies, perspectives, etc that they are exposed to. Yeah, I can't say I am advertising it but I am still open to explaining it to those important in my life.

I'm glad it went well for you. In the past I thought it was silly to "come out" as a fur, but it's definitely something I hide from some people in my life, and I'd rather be forthcoming about what I draw and why I travel to far-flung cities for weekend trips. R-Mutt echoes my sentiments.

Yeah, I dunno. I don't like the term "coming out" either. It shouldn't be such a big deal, but there is this ridiculous stigma attached to it that I don't get. I guess talking about it helps. It should be more casual. I picture a future where presidential candidates run attack ads along the lines of "My opponent is a furry WALF. As a Klingon, I believe in strong family values and oppose the anthromorphic agenda.".

i feel like if i come out to frands they'll want to know if i draw comics for furries online, and then they'd want to see my FA or finds way to google it. which may be a good or bad thing? for one a few may discover that i once had crushes on them?

I am not sure entirely. She knew that I had a thing for wolves when I was younger.

My brother has seen my drawings in high school, but we never really talked it about it past them. He only asked a few months ago after I had come out, he asked me, but I ended up laughing it off and saying No, I was being a stupid kid at the time. He'll find out eventually haha :3

I have no siblings but most of my friends know, we're a tight group so I know some of their kinks too. Furry isn't the weirdest among us though lol
One friends parents figured it out and asked me not to wear my tail to family events though... Damn CSI episode

When I came out to my mom she was like "duh" which got awkward quick hence I'm not flamboyant or anything.

When I came out furry she laughed for about 5 minutes then showed me some artwork of her fursona done back in the late 80's by some of her furry friends.... things have been very awkward since, considering she still actively chats with many "old school" furries. Creepy, I know.

That's cool, I'm always glad when I see folks doing that. Though I do understand it can be necessary for some younger folks still living at home to keep quiet, once you stop trying to keep it a secret you realize how much energy you've been wasting trying to hide.

I'm actually out of the house on my own. But I remember hiding my sexuality when I lived at home and how difficult it was for me to go on like that.

But yeah, I think that the more people open up about this type of thing, or other fetishes, the less stigma there will be towards them.

I run in several different circles, and I try to keep them separate. I feel that one group doesn't need to know about the other groups I'm in, although in some cases there is some overlap.
