Haha. Well, the only thing I really know right now about interstellar travel is that the most promising technology so far is a "light sail;" a barrier of some kind that light can't penetrate. Then we'd set up an enormous laser in orbit around Earth (or whatever the launch point would be) and shoot the laser at the light sail as long as possible to get the ship up to close to light speed.
We've already overcome the problem of space dust, which if collided with at light speed would be devestating. Someone has created a plasma shield in a lab to counteract it, so we have the solution to a problem that doesn't exist yet. xD Which is hilarious.
yeah. there is a lot of promise in the sail, though I'm more interested in the plasma shield they've produced. goof promise for lots of shielding things. yay sci-fi stuff becoming real :D
I'm honestly hoping the progress with anti-matter builds quickly, that's really the only way I can conceivably see us pushing the light barrier. and yes, I want FTL travel :P
I've heard of a plasma shield design specifically by a scientist named Geoffrey Landis, where they would suspend plasma hydrogen in a magnetic field around the ship. Not only does this stop space dust, but it would still allow electromagnetic waves and whatnot to get through. And they can actually build this thing now! It's kind of awesome. xD
It seems like we'd have to have a close-to-lightspeed ship before we could get FTL, but then again, they'd have to be completely different technologies, which is odd to think about...
Right now, there's something called the Hundred Year Starship Conference that meets annually to actually share all the up and coming information and research towards interstellar travel!
I still want my interstellar travel though :< maybe if we figure out how to manipulate the Boson......hmmmm...

true, but I am greedy, I want my FTL! then again, I'd also totally settle for the Stargate being real :3
this conference...this I must look into more closely!
