Bellydance and Men

(as an aside note to this journal, new favorites have been put up that you should totally look at! If anyone wants to submit their belly art to the group, please feel free to note me about it!)
It is traditional for bellydance and its similar forms to be considered a dance for women. What people may not know, is that it is also traditional--- to not allow the men to watch the women!!! Belly began as more of a 'secret' group meeting between women, allowing them to celebrate themselves. Much like today's version of a man-cave... I think. The first public performers of bellydance might surprise you- they were all men!
Here at Bellydance we celebrate the traditional and non-traditional, so, here, have an awesome male bellydancer.

I of course got this from the history of bellydance which had its origin in Ghawazi. The bellydance we know today is also heavily influenced by russian ballet.
however according to it, some of my information is incorrect in that males performed bellydance, and were the sole public dancers. This may be the origin of egyptian or turkish dance only, and may be different for other types.
