What is the first thing you look for in art and why

This also implies to what you try to show off in your art.
And dont give me 5 word anweres like "It depends on the style- NO
What do YOU like to see in art, preferably a detailed discription and things what catch your eye first, like
What about the style you like what about the coloring what about the features, do you prefer art males make or females make? Etc Etc....
You have a chance of winning a ref sheet depending on the amount of comments... I kinds assume I only get three or so :P
Since people cant give good discription I give one of my own so you can see what I mean.
First of first thing I notice are THE faces, I like it if people put alot of details in the eyes! I love shiny artwork, duo THE bodies looking more squishy! And sexyyyyy and slipperyyyy. I like smooth lineart not a big fan of THE sketchy lines, love it hen artwork looks abit 3D-ish smooth coloring, I prefer airbrushed over cellshading.
I love scenery to be cultural or fantasy, I especially like progressieve pictures over pinups!
I prefer female artists over male artists since females put more attention to face features and colors, and men mostly put all their attention to proportions and progressions.
I dislike mainstream type of art, THE typical way of anime people on DA draw alot. No shades no Shines not worth my eye-time
I like style-wise surealistic, cute, manga 80's shojo and fantasy

What is commonly referred to as "art" in this part of the internet, existing only to assist in manipulating one's biological functions? Well, good anatomy is of advantage, I, myself also prefer realism, but that aside it's all one - unless it's Fara.
Second, the definition of art is a matter of opinion. If you want people to state their opinion, please, try not to force yours on them.
For PG, I look for color, theme, shading, and general workmanship. I like to see colors that reflect the mood, and colors that work well together.
For XXX, I usually don't like porn because of how much detail goes into a penis or vagina alone. So I usually stick to tasteful nudes, how much anatomy was done correctly, theme, color, shading, and little things, like a belly button.
Hopefully this helps. :3 <3
Her artwork and talent are amazing. I just wish that all the attention wasn't on the penises she draws. Moar tasteful nudes please. :c
i'm sick of people being dark furred to be cliche mysterious and then wear dark clothed to be cliche mystereious and have a dark setting to be cliche mysterious and its so cliche and mysterious that all i get in a black damn picture.
and butts are awesome.
The figure has to be drawn convincingly in space, in addition to some semblance of correct proportion and perspective.
Expressive eyes (stylistically)
Some modicum of good draftsmanship/ clean lines or edges or we're talking about painting.
Usually I like stuff that's more a complete, conceptualized "Idea" more than just a random doodle.
I'm not really fussy with color except for garish rainbow vomit stuff that doesn't convey any sense of color theory at all.
Please forgive me if this was too verbose, I didn't just want to say something like
HURR I LIKE THEM BIG OLD BOOBBUTTSHIPSBELLIES
>
8-O
Look she has big boobs.
Nah but think Megabro takes the cake- if I were write my reason- it would long as a novel book.. xD
I love artists who are good at illustrating expression. I'm not saying it has to be super-cartoony and exaggerated, but when every picture seems to have the same expression, it gets old pretty fast.
When it comes to lines, I don't mind if they are somewhat rough. In a lot of cases, it can add a bit of personal style. Likewise, if the lines are too smooth, it can sometimes ruin the overall effectiveness. On the flip-side, too sketchy and it becomes a distraction and makes the image look unprofessional.
For backgrounds, I feel these have as much of an impact on the emotion expressed as the shading and highlighting. It's kind of like the soundtrack for the image.
I don't like characters that seem overloaded with design features/details in an attempt to make themselves original. A lot of times, less is more.
There's probably more I could say, but I'm a bit braindead at the moment, so I'll end it here.
I can break it down into this though:
If there is nothing interesting about the style, the content isn't very memorable; But style alone can't make up for content. The first thing I'm searching for is content. I don't like typical things. I don't like realism. If I wanted to see realism, I'd look at photographs. If you're gonna draw, why constrain yourself to reality, right? I think style is just as important as content, but it's not gonna keep my interest if the content doesn't interest me.
To expand on that: For style, I like cute mixed with sexy. Especially with dark themes. Like adorable evil things, cute characters doing evil things, etc :P
But it can't be too serious. There has to be some humor or weirdness in there somewhere. Best if it mocks itself. This is the reason I can get into anime/manga style, but not American comic style.
Again, I don't like realism, but for porn, it can't be TOO cartoony. Plain lineart is boring. I'd rather see half-assed sketches than ultra-clean lineart. When I look at a comic with only lineart, it's hard to keep up with what's going on. I can't see in lines. At LEAST put a flat shade of gray or something in there. To me, it's more about the parts inside those lines, which is probably why my "lines" are atrocious :P I prefer a painted look. It's more like toning down reality than reassembling parts of reality to me. Other than porn, I like concept art. I don't like realistic landscapes, artistic nudes, and just reality in general. I want something other than something that already exists. I don't care if it's a concept for a chair as long as it's new and interesting. Something that could be described as weird, funny, or badass :P
When it comes to characters, I don't like typical either. Aside from They don't HAVE to have cartoonish proportions, but they need to be something other than average and the same as the other, physically and mentally. Personality should show in expressions and actions. Expressions are what give the whole action meaning. It's okay if they're a little exaggerated. This is art. My mind automatically blocks out characters that are TOO realistic or TOO unrealistic. I should be able to guess who this character is if I was given some text that they had said.
When I'm looking through submissions, there are several artists that blur together. I see artists who are incredibly skilled, but if they draw just like all the other incredibly skilled artists, then there's nothing special about their art. If I can't recognize the style from a thumbnail, then the content has to make up for it.
...that turned into a mini-essay, and I didn't mean for it to. Still didn't cover everything, but I don't know how to word things xD
I do say I am not into SUPER realistic art either, tho I do appreciate the skill, but thats not what this journal is about its about what you prefer to see :) so its good that you kept stating your own opinion and dont limit yourself to lets say.."your favorite artist" because it needs to be YOUR perfect idea you know :) you gave me a good discription.
I love clean smooth lines myself, but also only if its colored (because I like art that has a 3Dish look even tho its a 2D drawing wich is why I am not to big on the painting or cellshaded type..) but yeah when its just.. clean smooth lines with no colors I would also prefer sketch, because just neatlineart kind of makes it look... like a empty shell :P
And that last part, is totally what I mean with mainstream, like the art is great, but.. it doesnt pop-out it isnt unique :P I am not into those artist, like on DA all the SUPERSKILLED 13 yearold girls drawing anime, GREAT Yet, I can tell they are 13 because their art is to blend with everything else :P personally I love artists that if you see their art you can go "OH THATS THIS ARTIST!" Without even zooming in, thats probably why people also think "style" is most important in an artist.. but it really isnt, its a combination of skill and their artstyle.
But yes I'd say I also find a unique artstyle abit more important then skill (PERSONALLY :p) but in a perfect world I'd love both, wich alot of artists do have, but they are mostly the more older artists.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my journal :) This helps me out. I am personally very oke with my artwork, I love my style and my way of drawing XD (Hope that doesnt come over cocky, I do envy alot of other artists like yourself :P) but this kind of helps me to get ideas, wich is why I hate when people just comment "oh, I like big butts." or "I like the style" or "Bright colors" that doesnt help me one bit XP
It's good that you're happy with your art. I'm happy with my style, but I don't like much else about my art xD
...I like big butts :D
