Captain's Log - 22nd Journal - Disney Inquiry
17 years ago
The other day, whilst cavorting with some fellow Disney heroes over lunch--though I've not yet discovered why this company has branded me a 'hero'-- we were discussing and flaunting different bouts of popularity concerning our movies.
Simba proclaimed he was the most prominent, as he was loved by both the mundane folk and the furry population; Hercules believed he was the best choice, as he was the righteous standard by which other heroes were judged. Aladdin said...well, let's be brusque and to the point: nobody cares what Aladdin said.
Then Barbossa ambled over and kicked over our lunch table, vehemently branded us 'nerds', and stalked off laughing alongside Scar , Jafar, and Hades . How very polite.
In any case, out of sheer curiosity, who is your favorite Disney hero and villain? -clears throat- No pressure, friends...

... but now that you mention it, I think Jack Skellington would be favourite character wise. he looked friggin' awesome... so I guess you can feel good that i at least picked one of Disney's Jacks, right? >.>
Actually, your choices are acceptable, though when I say heroes and villains I also include the comic relief characters who belong to either side, example being Timon and Pumbaa or the Genie ( heroes ) versus Iago or Ed the Hyena( villains ).
And granted, Mr. Skellington does look undeniably entertaining; lovely singer too; eunuch. . . obviously enough.
Bernard & Miss Bianca would get my vote as heros for their part in The Rescuers. This movie always touched a chord with me since I first watched it a a wee child and proved that even the most unlikely person, not matter how small can make a difference and help those in need.
Maleficent, dragon or not, is a terrifying woman.. so your childhood-related fear is respectable. She is still used quite prominently throughout the Disney media and parks--especially the more elaborate shows--and it's a wonder the small children don't scramble away in a panicked frenzy whenever she approaches.
Also, she incinerated my dog Lester.
We don't talk much.
Sorry Jack, he was there 'bout 15 years earlier in my life than you....
Hrm. Now I have even more reason to engage that Hook fellow in combat.
Donald Duck though, we're on good terms.
Being blunt, there is no other Disney movie in the last 30 years that I've cared about, and many that I am actively antagonistic too.
But the PotC movies? The original was freaking brilliant!
I will admit that I like the animation style of Lion King, but that was it. Even the simularities to Hamlet wasn't enough to rescue it from my ire.
Yeah, you get my vote Captain.
D.O.P.R
Appreciation in grandiose amounts for you, sir.
And yes, the original and most prominent in my series was indeed fantastic and enjoyable to the very end.
Dead Man's Chest...well, I was truly half conscious for most of it.
At World's End...I didn't even have a script.
I'm truly hoping they don't force a fourth feature upon me. I don't think I can handle flying ships.
But the movies have always been about you Captain, and in that regard I was not disapointed.
D.O.P.R
Sorry but he's a -space- pirate.
I'll somehow recover from this shattering blow to my ego.
That aside, I'm not entirely a fan of piracy in the celestial nothingness. What with all their intriguing technology, it seems like they can just take things with halfhearted ease, not even working for--
...wait.
Wonderful news, I've decided to become a space pirate!
Sorry for the hurt ego. At least you're not stuck in a 2 dimensional world.
...
Puns.
Stitch...such a troublesome creature, yet many find him so appealing. You'll have to explain his intrigue to me.
...an yeah ya ARE a hero Capt. though you yerself may not deem yerself worthy of the title... As Tim Curry once sang in the Muppets pirate movie: "Now take Sir Frances Great, The spanish all dispise 'im... but to the british he's a hero and they idolize 'im... It's how ya look at buckaneers that makes 'em bad or good... and I see us as members of a noble brotherhood!..."
:)
But few people can be that way with such a flourish that'cha can't help but idolize'em fer it... an you m'good Capt. are one of'em :)
Villain is a tough one! Either Scar or Ratigan. I prefer my villains to be especially cunning and malicious, if not a bit broody.
Pirates.. bloody pirates. We won't talk about that issue.
My villains need two things: style, and a proper sense of humour. As such, Jafar's high on my list due to having his own version of "Prince Ali" which was sang with such awful delight that you just couldn't help but laugh with him. Scar's right up their too, if only because of that "Be Prepared" song... he was more mean than funny, though... >.>
... as it is just now occuring to me that i actually didn't pick a favourite villain for this, I guess i might as well right now... hmmm...
... I'll have to go with Hook. I've always been partial to pirates, and I will honestly say that had a one Capt. Jack Sparrow replaced peter Pan, that movie would've been leaps and bounds more interesting... seriously, watching Sparrow fly around drunkenly would be even more entertaining than watching him WALK around drunkenly! :D
On that note, we seriously need Dustin Hoffman to reprise his role as Hook to take on Jack in a Never never Land showdown to end them all. That would be so friggin' bad ass. :D
Villian is Scar. Looked at as the enemy even though in the movie he was truely fucked over by his brother Mufasa. Yet everyone still looks at Scar as the bad guy because he takes the matter into his own hands when I feel he's justified. Sure he killed Mufasa but Mufasa was a pussy and dicked him over anyway ...he had it coming. I mean cmon now, here's a lion that lives all his life for the one day he can take over as king. It' not like he would of been living long considering his old age but he should of at least been allowed to go out with a bit of glory. The guy is sly too, he has that chilled back attitude with blunt tip tongue for response. I love his sense of sarcastic humor.
Scar is a good villain, absolutely...very cunning and sly, intelligent...but his actions are hardly justified. Just because he didn't get his way and his brother was a more reliable King, he took a very immature and morally indecent path. Not only that, he plunged the kingdom into drought and famine.
Now we could take into account that he has always been emotionally distraught ever since he was a cub, mingling that with jealousy and such...it obviously produced an unstable lion. However, the point of life is to create meaning for yourself, and being strong enough to sidestep roadblocks like that ...not decimate someone else's life and implant yourself in a position you were never meant for just to satiate your own needs.
THEN AGAIN , I suppose that's what makes a great and lamentable villain, which he was. And why in bloody hell did I just attempt to theorize all of that?
Also, I think Kovu has always had great potential; they really need to do more with him. Good character.
In any case, I'm going to go pillage and plunder and do otherwise illegal things that in no way make my teachings of integrity above totally meaningless.
Dramatic Irony.
Heros: You, Captain Jack Sparrow, Experiment 626 AKA Stitch (I don't suppose you ran into him?), Simba, along with Timon and Pumba, Spirit, Bernard, Basil, and Jack Skellington :3
Heroines: Mulan, Ms. Bianca, ... drat, I could've sworn there were more than that ???
Villains: Scar, Ratigan, Oogy Boogy, Barbosa
Villainess: Ursula and Zira
Very interesting choices; I'm particularly fond of the fact you tossed Timon and Pumbaa in there. Their carefree teachings delight me so.
Also...yes, Stitch. We've met on more than one occasion.
Take a note : Never allow that troublesome creature to ever touch my compass again.
yeah. jack and hook. i also have a thing for zira from the second lion king, but i think we've talked about that already. :F
And yes, we've discussed that. . .
Why does Zira have to be so AMAZING.
Hmmm...Well, for sheer entertainment, my two favorites are the lovable and mischievious ball of fluff, Stitch, and a certain punch-drunk pirate who has seen too much sun and too much rum...
For a hero, though, I'm sorry to admit this, but I must resort back to the ever roguish and furry Robin Hood. he's a fox, he's an archer, and he was English when it meant something. And he's got a neat hat.
For villians, I must say that the cool sneer and clean, almost metallic evil of Malificent has always done it for me. She's a fairy witch, and can turn into the best and most frightening dragon that Disney has ever produced.
Honorable mention goes to Chernobog, simply for the reason that he is EVIL INCARNATE and the size of a mountain. I doubt even Tia Dalma at her best could stand up to him and the hoary hosts.
And another for the demon from Fantasia! He's a tad irate , he is. Also, he cheats at cards.
Though I suppose when you're the size of a mountain and can summon spirits and such, you're allowed to pretty much do anything.
As for my fav hero XP
I knew The Little Mermaid was my fav movie when I was young.
Back on topic now, lemme see... Admittedly you are among my top faves, Captain. And to be perfectly on the opposite, I happen to like Davey Jones. There's something so... awesome about him.
*Whistles* I like villains almost better than heroes. Like Hades is, well, he's more evil because he's ticked off with his brother. Scar was downright evil because he was always shunned.
...villains are wicked, literally.
Also butts.
Though admittedly, I could most likely never succeed at the sort of work you do. I have all the artistic dexterity of a beetle.
Also, I commandeered your tip jar.
To the matter at hand... I don't know any 'heros' worth idolizing, so, I suppose, if you're onna them... I have to pick you by default. Don'a Duck is in the same boat, but, as a fellow sea-man, I'm sure you can understand.
But oh... the villians. How I love thee. My vote goes to The Horned King, from The Black Pearl... er, I mean, Cauldron. I say him, because he clearly has villian written all over him. Disney is too full of huffandfluff sometimes, but I love them all in their failing ways. Them, and Chernabog. That scene still gives me tingles. I'll give you a full treasure trove of booty if ya can name where that beasty is from.
Out of ALL those characters how many have gone head to head with a Kraken and LIVED to tell about it?
Need I say more?
Definately a fan of most of them. Scar is slinky and awesome. John Silver from Treasure Planet was a great character; I really liked how he moved, for some reason. Gaston was hilariously hairy. Maleficent was only cool cus she could turn into a dragon. John Silver is probably my fav, though.
Heros...
I hate ALL of the princesses. All of them. They are all ditzy, breakable, emo, bitches. Belle and Mulan are somewhat forgivable, but they return to their gender expectations by the end of the films.
I like the Beast though, Genie, Merlin, Archimedes (coolest owl EVAR), and Captain Amelia (the cat woman).
And, I think all the Pixar stuff and live action films should have their own seperate category, which I won't go into XD
...because Draco pwns all D:
I remember saying that I liked Pegasus from Hercules. Beautiful creature with the brain of a bird!
Oooh! and I like that candle guy from Beauty and the Beast. I can't spell his name right :P I like him cuz I thought he was just a funny womanizer.
Isn't White Fang a Disney movie too?! I've had that movie a long time ago, awesome. I actually like the mean sledder guy, he was mean at first but turned into a pretty funny guy. "I'm not your wife!"
Best fucking Disney movie ever to begin with. I guess I just have this thing for big hairy men?
Ahem. In all seriousness, Beauty and the Beast has been my all-time favorite. I can still remember that Beauty lunchbox I had as a kid, and all the toys... Gaston however was a little fuckface. Stupid pussy that he was.
BEAST FTW. I think I'ma go redownload that movie... We sold all our Disney tapes a few years ago. :( Regret it muchly.
Obviously, he and I are not on speaking terms.
Admittedly though, he can handle his alcohol consumption with astounding prowess. Good choice.
But, my main favorites are: Hades, Scar, Barbossa, Panic.. and that's all I can remember
And as far as villains go, I guess Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame would have to be it, just because he is the ultimate evil, with hate as his driving force. Jafar is pretty close, but he's just like all the others in the sense that he just wants more power. Frollo just... hates.
As for villains, well I offer you but one set of options, which will it be:
The pen? Or the plank?
I can't call you an all out hero, though you ARE my favorite Disney character. The way I see it, you are a man out for himself against the world, trying above all to enjoy himself. He gets thrown into over outrageous situations and somehow, despite coming off as a complete dolt at times, manages to contrive some seemingly masterminded plot to save his ass. All at the same time having an unshakable need to do the right thing, while trying to convince himself hes nothing but a dastardly womanizing "pirate". He wants everyone to think him a villain, but is truly a good man at his core. Though while he doesn't have to worry about that somewhat pesky moral compass he will do what he can to get what he wants, especially if it means adding to his "bad" reputation.
He has flavor, internal and PLENTY of external struggles, love interests (alcohol, the sea, alcohol, women, alcohol, money (for alcohol), etc.)
And I really did like quite a bit of Worlds End, (though there was a bit TOO much going on) and I think it had a very defining scene for you. When you gave up your chance for immortality to save someone.
As for Villains. Barbossa, who again I can't count as JUST a villain. Hes almost as fun as our Capt. in the right situation.
Thats what makes good characters. Being more than JUST a good guy or a bad guy. There is always more to a person than true evil or absolute good, and characters that are JUST one or the other simply feel fake.
Even Davey Jones has a soft side, though buried under quite allot of slimy emotional angst, spite and wrigglies.
So many other Disney characters are either too pure or too vile. I want sweet, sour AND spice, not just salt or sugar.
Sorry for my overlong attempt to sound intellectual.
Mangoes.
Truly though, I need to commend you; one planned intention for this journal originally was to see if someone could fully gauge my personality, as well as the personalities of others...as I assumed someone would want to explain their reasoning for favorites.
Your opinion--despite it not being originally relative to my inquiry-- has been the most in depth and intriguing composition of thoughts I've received thus far. You're essentially right on the dot concerning my demeanor--though I reluctantly admit this-- and I am impressed you've managed to blur the lines between heroes and villains and instead just state them as singular characters all on their own with varying personalities. My hat's off to you-- a rare occurance, as I am quite attached to it.
Concerning Will however, do you think that it was a choice of integrity on my part, or rather --in secret-- a way to get Will and Elizabeth seperated--if only temporarily-- so I would not have to put up with their constant , romantic yammerings and stale dialogue and expressions; passing up eternal life is tantamount to bliss if it comes to shutting those two up.
I jest, I am truly a kind person within. Or am I?
In any case, you're correct about Davey Jones and Barbossa as well...there is more to them than most people see at slight face value...though Hector is rather mum about his upbringings and deeper thoughts, as it were. I suppose that adds to his self fabricated allure, the git.
Sincerely though, bravo bravo. I thank you heartily for your statements.
Mananas.
And thank you for being such a lively, layered character.
Heros,....
You are a scoundrel, but heroic at the same time!!1
Take a wild guess! *loves*
My favourite villain is Yzma. :D
Jack Skellington
Chicken Little
Mickey Mouse
Goofy
Simba
Stitch
Villians: Scar
Banzai
Ed
Pete
Jafar
Big Bad Wolf
I'll go with Scar and the kraken.
The best protagonist or hero in my opinion would be Simba from the Lion King. He was traumatized as a cub when he saw his own father died in front of his eyes and was chased off and received death threats. It wasn't until he saw how an awful ruler Scar was did he go back and fight him to death.
(Off topic but I have yet to see The Curse of the Black Pearl. O__________o;)
Heroines...eek. Yeah, most of them are too happily-ever-after, but I have to give a nod to Mulan. What she did to some major courage, especially in the face of what she had to lose, considering Chinese culture at the time the film was set. Belle was damned brave in her own way. Most gals I know personally would not fare quite so well under similar circumstances. Most of my favorite heroines come from outside the Disney circle. *cough cough* Fiona and Crysta *cough cough*
Villians...that's a bit tougher. Jafar is up there, just because he was a sneaky bastard, but he got greedy. Probably Scar too, for the mind-fuck he put on Simba. Cruella DeVille has to be the one I love to hate most.
On the whole, I've found Disney villains a little too goofy to really respect. Though, I gotta admit, Rattagan from The Great Mouse Detective would probably take my vote as best devious villian.
~GR
As far as villains go, Maleficent is amazing; she has a real sense of style in whichever form she assumes. I love Ursula, too. Those two take the term "bad girl" to a whole 'nother level, and with excellent results. I think the villains of the male persuasion pale a bit in comparison, honestly.
