In need of some advices(video recording,editing etc)

So then, I'm never been too much into whole making videos or such but still enjoy'd to look people's creations in youtube and such. Yeah I did do some "livestreams" that felt really...really awkward and my stupid low connection couldnt handle it, and I was totally throwing myself to woods most of the time.
But currently I have some assigments that I need to use a recording program, editor and even filetype convertor for it. I have done some research but was amazed about the amount of different programs there is.
So what are the free programs/softwares some of you guys/girls can recommend for a rookie like me to use? ^^;

- converter "SUPER" - good for changin file datas (like .mov, .avi, .wmv,...)
Software (buy)
- Sony vegas pro 11 (?) - i use it my self but it is NOTW cheep. with that you can make good edits with your videos and audio invideo. a sample is my intro and the spin offs in the video, here a sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G6ntIOJozA
also it is easy to use.
