How long are the issues (in words, or in pages)? Are there interior illustrations? How often it's published (weekly)?
As for why it is still running. It's space opera at it's best. The main characters have been given a device from a higher being so they don't age and are rather hard to kill. The titular character is currently over 3.000 years old and was on the first moon expedition (note that this was written before the real moon landing). What they manage to bring is a sense of wonder. Local, galactic, intergalactic and cosmic conflicts, psionics, aliens with more than just funny noses (sorry, couldn't resist), higher beings, big spaceships, pace battles are among the things that make the series interesting.
One example of the (what I consider) lesser great visuals they have is the Solar Residence. This is the goverment of the League of free Terrans (mostly humans, but it includes many aliens, as such things are counted if you have over 1.000 member systems). Here is a picutre of the Residence: http://www.rz-journal.de/Downl/2000.html It's nicknamed 'The Steel Orchid' and is a kilometer tall.
And here is a trailer to a fan movie in which the fan animated the first issues of a story arch (sorry, german only): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdLKkGOt63A
Good thing with such a long-running series is that it constantly races with technology. In the mid 1980s, I suppose there were cyberpunk elements introduced to the story. Late 2000s, internet and smart gadgets also, and so on. But at the same time, all these things might've already existed in the stories, and that's the real value of them.
Said empire for example was decadent and many of it's people were addicted to something we would call a virtual reality game today.
