The button is not shown to people who already can't see mature/adult art due to either their filter settings or being maturelocked by the administration.
Maybe not, but there have been occasions where artwork would suddenly be missing from my messages and favorites. Other artwork would disappear from other users' galleries.
It should be a blank white rectangle, with one of those little "JPEG error" red X's in the top left corner. That would REALLY drive everyone crazy. lol
Though, people leaving FA because of an issue no one had control over is a load of BS.
That's like never using a car ever again because you had to replace a tire.
How often do you update the firmware on your PC's motherboard? hard drives? video card? keyboard even, if it's advanced enough to need one? There's some things you expect to just work. Besides, not all firmware updates are without the risk of losing either your data or controller configuration.
It's easy to criticize in hindsight.
I dunno. While I have NO IDEA what exactly failed, users have been complaining about the site slowing down for months, and stuff was starting to glitch up. I'm pretty sure that massive site lag and errors should have been a hint something was about to break or something needed fixed.
Slowdown prior to failure had nothing to do with the failure itself. They were the result of my actions; namely: backing up the database for the purpose of setting up several more completely disconnected development sandboxes.
This is a bit like sending faded flowers to the family of the serial killer's victim while the serial killer is still on foot. And that's sad, really sad since I expected some more professionally from the side of the admins of handling this kind of 'easy-to-solve' issues.
What about having a backup server or having spare parts in stock? Such simple things could reduce the time that the site would be fully online instead of waiting till the order arrived.
dude, this is a non-commercial site, you can't expect them to stock up on very expensive commodities just so you can get your free furry porn that little bit faster
So the fact that the ads doesn't give enough revenue and that third party donations are small is an excuse for not buying a backup server / parts? That's a bad attitude for running a 'popular' site IMO.
DaveC said:
Not having the money to buy parts/a complete server is a very good excuse for not doing that.
Has nothing to do with attitude whatsoever, but everything to do with available resources.
Well it seems that we've very different opinions on resource management.
Oh, sure. Everything you've said so far is just peachy.
Now, tell me about all the times you worked to maintain the site.
Oh? You don't?
Okay, then you have nothing to complain about when it comes to failed equipment, it doesn't affect you in any way since you didn't fund them.
They aren't your patsies, and if you aren't contributing to the maintenance of the site, then you don't have any room to complain about it.
In the end, everything works out fine and nothing was lost to us.
But hey, I think this just boils down to your opinion on how they should run their free website, and well... that's just like, your opinion, man.
;]
Since when do you, as user of a site, have to contribute to it to give feedback about it?
I've never crossed upon such site.
May an user 'complain' and ask further on the happened things?
Sure, since it's free feedback and two-way communication with the aim to improve the issue handling.
You aren't giving any real feedback, just poorly worded criticism.
But whatever!
Okay, that's fine, I understand you don't like the website.
Enjoy your stay at Inkbunny(Or whatever?)
Would you perhaps care to be a sponsor? I'll gladly stock a spare hard drive for every RAID array we have in production with your money. Not supporting a 'popular' site you find yourself coming back to, even if just to cast blame, is not an excuse.
*sigh* We have a backup server and we do make backups. The problem is that these backups are always at least a week behind. Besides, what good would having even a completely fresh backup do if you have no hardware to restore it on?
because maybe that server isn't entirely configured or capable of being a drop in replacement for the database server because it is you know, used as a backup server.
hm, but aren't these ads from local artists, rather than corporations? FA can't be making *that* much money off of what is still technically a niche society.
I hope that you could at least understand that making such kind of jokes with 404 and similar gives the message that the server issue isn't / wasn't taken serious.
Just wondering: Would there be an evaluation-session within the whole admin team about how the situation is handled and what could be improved for the next time that this kind of server issues happen?
I wouldn't say it wasnt taken serious. They kept the site status forum updated so people knew what was going on. They're just being light-hearted about it. Fact remains that Fur Affinity is back up, and we didn't lose our data, so it could've been much worse. Its a good thing to be able to laugh it off and be thankful it wasnt worse.
If you think they need an evaluation, let me know the next time you run a site with as much as F.A.
while I don't like the site being down any more than anyone else (though those who make some form of livelihood on here were far more upset)... I have to wonder if there is such a thing as taking it too serious.
It would be very easy to apologize half-heartedly... It would also technically be easier to prostrate yourself in front of others, or commit ritual suicide, or just generally be dark and depressing about the scenario... What I see is people trying desperately to make light of a bad situation... Sure, its not "professional behavior"... but I get that kind of soulless efficiency from Deviant art, and more than a handful of other problems from them as well, usually in the shape of wanton elitism and commercialism.
... but I'm just a god damn hippie without any professional training and not a clue on how to get ahead in life... so I doubt my opinion matters for much in the eyes of most professionals.
Honestly you don't have to nail me down on every comment which isn't even aimed at you, only because we have a disagreement about budget / resource management. Or is that your sense of humor?
Why would I admit that you are right about something you aren't? Everything I say for entertainment value is not necessarily in line with my own sense of humor
I help run another website so I know how much internet servers can be a total pain in the ass to run and maintain; Only difference when that site crashed (due to malicious hackers) ALL data had been lost and we had to start fresh all over again.
At least this time no data had been lost and we can just pick up right where we left off. *Whew!*
Speaking of the banner and performance, are you ever going to recode the header to use different URLs for new banners instead of just replacing the file, so we won't have to refresh to see the changes every time?
I'm glad no data was lost. The backups did their job. I'm probably wrong but it actually feels like the site runs faster to me. You'll hear no kvetching from me. Thank you for all your hard work! ^.=.^
I was going to comment on the banner, but now I'm tempted to say something horribly racist, misogynistic, pedophilic, or illegally threatening here that is completely and totally off topic. With this many comments, who would notice it anyway? Hmmm...
I think in light of the outage and everything, at least you guys have a highly functional site that doesn't deliver errors all the time, and you keep it running smoothly. Unlike sofurry who was way better off as yiffstar and anthrostar, who thought a preview thing was a good idea that turned out to be a horrible nuisance. Anyway, what im trying to say is keep up the hard work and please, Please, PLEASE do not change a THING about this site. It is reliable and works flawlessly, and what errors occur you take care of promptly. You guys should be proud^^
I look at it this way: FA began acting up around the time of FAU5 con, right? Had it gone down right when the con occurred, it would have likely been bad for FA's name sake, not to mention the bad publicity it would have generated.
Oh thank god... I was afraid that the site was hacked, and this was just the final insult by those responsible... glad to know its just a bit of self depreciation.
From what I have seen from my friends trying to make their own sites (A news and b/s free, super-efficient weather site, for one little example), handling any sort of online site without scads of money is difficult. The fact that you keep ads in the local community has been very respectable in my eyes (something not even that weather site can do effectively).
I wish all those responsible for keeping this site alive the absolute best of luck... though I *will* give Dragoneer a prod for favorite-ing a bit of my work and not letting me know what he liked about it was *grins* Just friendly ribbing from a small pet peeve of mine:>
Corsi once did a song along time ago about the 404 error that plagued this site along time ago, i think it was a month or so that its been down..i wouldnt know because i joined fa in 2009, but i did hear about it on SL.
To help eas the pain of this 404 Error, that is also an error code for a refer unit i work on for complete shut down. Don't ask me how it got programmed in.
what, you mean we aren't getting that new 3month downtime like back in...was it 2008 or 2009? :P gotta love how silly cracks like this also get the nice heap of tissy fits and/or drama like above though, no? :3
Hahahaha the banner made me laugh so hard! I love how you were able to take something that must be frustrating to yourself and the entire community, and make a joke about it.
For once having tons of FA tabs in my browser pays off! Unfortunately, the one I wanted to find was somewhere on my HDD and I don't remember the name...
(It works because new versions of Firefox don't load every tab, just the "active" ones of each window, so the server doesn't get hammered when somebody reopens a session.)
Yeah...can we, um...fix the search already? You've had several days to get it done. Unless your lives are completely booked solid there's no way Search should be down for this long. (and if they ARE booked solid, I suggest getting more volunteers ASAP)
When I first saw '404 Affinity [dot] Net' at the top after the last web crash,I always thought there still had a error that had not be fixed...but after I click that.....oh!!!!!!!!!!!What a joke...
Overlord: Who wants to know a little about nuclear weaponry? Or how zombies work? I am chalk full of post-apocalyptic facts that will leave you prepared for anything! They are not in FAQ's form yet, but you can ask in my "conversation Starter" journal. Or even better, send me a note.
I am really glad I can access FA with Tor again... I don't really like being on FA with my plain internet because of my nosy ISP :P
Glad to have FA back up :D

It should be a snippet of the 502 page
This banner is still the best thing ever!

I never get 404s :p
Though, people leaving FA because of an issue no one had control over is a load of BS.
That's like never using a car ever again because you had to replace a tire.
Plus people are going to come back anyways. Like usual.
It's easy to criticize in hindsight.
BUT WHAT DO I KNOW.

HL2.Tigerfan51087.exe has stopped working
The raid crashed and there was a bug in the raid controller, that's not an easy to fix issue, especially not with a database the size of that of FA
Given the costs that it takes to run this site, versus the revenue from the ads, they're losing money if they run the site just based on the ads.
Has nothing to do with attitude whatsoever, but everything to do with available resources.

In this case spare parts wasn't the issue. It was negligence in updating the firmware on the RAID.

We have ordered a replacement driver (overnight shipping).
In other words, the duration of the downtime could be reduced if there were spare parts were in FA's stock.

you guys should stop providing free services and allowing us a laugh when they inevitably but temporarily fail
because we all adore you :D <3

Admitting that I'm right isn't that hard.

Problem is intermittent so hard to pin down A cause.
Maybe check your error logs and see if is something more than just extremely high traffic.
I'm glad no data was lost. The backups did their job. I'm probably wrong but it actually feels like the site runs faster to me. You'll hear no kvetching from me. Thank you for all your hard work! ^.=.^

Love the banner BTW. I saw it before it was up and hopped it would make it to the top of the page.:)
Glad you guys're so good humoured about it!
By the way, thanks for all the hard work you guys did getting this site back up.
Thanks for getting all the monsters out the servers
I really like the old banners, gave this place a nice flare.

that is hilarious
Thanks xDD
Need it, need it bad, need it ultra-mega-critical. Or the FA Writers Directory
doesn't function (kinda like built on Sphinx).
A 14,352 username directory, and the 57,408 search links to everybody's work
all cough up a 3312 error. AIEEEGH!!!
(A sound you may have heard before, over recent days :- ) )
All possible speed, please?
404=No, God please no! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
BUT WHEN I DO IT'S AT THE EXACT MOMENT IT WAS NEEDED TO DO WHAT RAID WAS DESIGNED TO DO
....
FUCK.
(It works because new versions of Firefox don't load every tab, just the "active" ones of each window, so the server doesn't get hammered when somebody reopens a session.)
<unspeakable levels of profanity>
his tie.
YAY
Now can I has my custom thumbnails back again pliz. ; 3 ;
<3!
Glad to have FA back up :D
