Four year anniversary
It was three days ago; I forgot it again. Oh well. :P That's not really what I'm writing about, anyway.
So, I just finished book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire--Dance with Dragons. I like it about 100x more than Feast for Crows, which I couldn't even finish. Lots of great development between characters and plot in this one. However, I still skipped over a lot of the minor character chapters, with the exception of Theon's, Arya's, and Ser Barristan's. I just can't get into Victarion and Asha and whoever the hell else he wrote about (as far as minors go). That said, I loved Jon, Tyrion, and Dany, no surprise. That said, again, I felt that, despite their strong character arcs, many plot arcs that needed resolution were not settled. I don't know why Stannis's battle is taking so damn long, and same goes for Meereen. Also, it's a bit unlike Martin to give a character a possible death and not provide the resolution (whether he/she died or not) by the end of the book.
Here's to hoping the next book arrives speedily.

5th book left a lot to be desired, but as we've discussed before maybe it's because he didn't plan to write them, but I agree, I preferred it to Feast. Though I did finish Feast I barely remember it, because everything that happened was basically of no consequence. I HATE Vicatarion and Asha but I still read them, Asha's got okay because she was around places I was interested in in the later half of the book. Sorta looking forward to what's gonna happen with Dany, she ROYALLY pissed me off through most of the book though. I loves me some Barristan. I'm not at all a fan of Jon and think he's been making terrible decisions, and was semi happy to see what happened with him, though if it is the case it throws a huge hole in my major theory about where the series is going.
I felt that if I'd skipped more of the minor character chapters I would have enjoyed it even more. I don't know why I read Quentyn Martell. He ended up being utterly useless as a viewpoint character. I also didn't really see what Jon had done so poorly. I didn't agree with everything he did, but the way I see it, he was just looking to fight against the bigger threat, and he needed the wildlings and stannis on his side to do that.
Dany can be hit or miss with me. Sometimes I think she's an annoying bitch and sometimes I really like her. However, now with Aegon on the scene I don't really think she has any claim to the Iron Throne.
Just I've never liked Jon's character, or any of the decisions he makes or thought processes, he feels the least inventive of a character to me, as well. The most typical of a main character, somewhat naive so he has the flaws of a human, but the pretty strong moral fiber of one, clear motivations, very relate able, etc. etc. He's just very typical like This is how you write a good main character to me, so it makes him bland, compared to most of Martin's characters.
The only claim she has to the throne now is a goddamn army, and dragons. Pretty much my same feels towards Dany, Roberto hates her a lot though, but Martin said that's how he wrote her, he wanted there to be lots of people who hated her, as well as loved her.
I get that he's more typical, and I agree, but I like that he's in a situation where he has to make tough decisions, and there's a bunch of people he can't trust. I feel George challenges him well.
My love/hate for Dany sometimes depends on what's happening in Westeros. Like when Robb was rebelling, I hated Dany because I really didn't want her to have to fight and possibly defeat Robb. However, when Robb made his exit, I jumped onto Dany's side because I felt she could deliver some proper punishment to the Lannisters, Freys, and Boltons. I'm currently on Stannis's side, but I don't really hate Dany. I just don't really want her to win.
I want Dany to fry Melisandre something fierce. I really want Tyrion and Dany to get together, Tyrion, Dany, Barristan, epic.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who likes Melisandre.
I was so eagerly hoping for Tyrion and Dany to get together in book five. And they got soooo damn close! Argh! Soon, I pray. They'd make such a badass team, and I'm sure Dany could win the Iron Throne with him on her side.
I believe strongly that Jon is Lyanna and Rhaegar's son. I believe there's lots of evidence for it, and that she died during childbirth, and that whole thing in first book when Ned kept remembering her saying "promise me Ned, promise me", I believe it was about not telling Robert, or anyone for that matter, about Jon. There was even some evidence in Dany's visions in the House of the Undying, at least, that's how I took it, and tons of evidence for Lyanna and Rhaegar's union. Also just the way GRRM writes Eddard I doubt he would have cheated on Cat at all. I had compiled a list of moments that could be interpreted as evidence, but I can't seem to find it, and it's been a while since I read the books, but I believe it's hinted at.
