9 Tips for markers/pencils? also: character poll idea..
so I've been drawing stuff.
But I have yet to scan anything in. Therefore, this could pose a problem.
I intended at some point to do so, even if I have nothing worth uploading, solely to break the ice on scanning things in.
(I could even be doing this literally right now. Which is good. But currently I'm not. Which is bad.)
But despite that I'm not really in any rush, because aside from me still in a warming up phase, I've only really drawn two characters (because I've been purposefully focusing on drawing only specific characters) and I'm still deciding how they should look, refining them, etc. Even the sketches of them, I end up erasing bits and pieces and redraw/improve those parts. (eraser whoring still works! it really is like old times. While also being not like old times for better or worse... but also, in a bad way, too much like old times.)
anyway, I was trying to decide on a character to focus on. I was going to do the human version of the deer character (Mirra) but ultimately, unexpectedly, I'm thinking of putting that on the backburner, because I can't get the overly complex story figured out or even why it was so exciting in the first place (my tastes changed a little?) not to mention none of the drawings of her so far look right.
I actually have a gazillion characters unfortunately, but I'm trying to look at only the ones that involve as few other characters as possible. I'm looking to be able to draw 1 main character and be able to jump right in. For example, Mirra was a good candidate because she's just one character who for the most part goes it alone. (as opposed to, for instance, a scenario that involves a group of friends rather than a single character) Of course, other people are still involved such as her master(s), but what they look like are not particularly important.
This gave me an idea to list the characters I'm considering in a journal. Maybe it could be like a poll, and I might end up deciding based on what you think is the best idea. Let me know if I should do this.
p.s.
I've been drawing abs and they've been looking surprisingly good. But is there an exact number of abs? I will have to look them up again. I remember reading that the number of abs varies from person to person. Or was it just their positioning that varies from person to person? (for example some people have abs under belly button, some don't.) Maybe I got the two things confused.
As for markers vs colored pencils: Markers, I find, still have the skid mark effect! (where you can literally every stroke I made. When I got markers, I thought they would give me a flat coloring effect.. but this is just bad.) Though a weird thing happened, I inked a drawing with a sharpee, then moments later I colored it with a prismacolor marker.. (stupid me, I should have waited for it the sharpee to fully dry first) but what happened is the marker became darker, and the skid mark effect seemed to go away for a little while. Perhaps this warrants further investigation.. although I doubt this will be easily replicated, and it definitely won't work on lighter colors.
As for colored pencils, I was going to try application maximum pressure to see if I can go for a flat color effect. Does anyone do this? Will this method work?

With humans, a drawing is always an imitation of reality, while with furries a drawing is the reality.

You get 6 lumps above the navel, and two longer ones below. Sometimes the ones below can appear to have a bit more than just a single shape though, like this guy has:

The positioning of the navel can vary a bit, and often the upper pair of abs can be quite small and blend in to the ribcage. Like on this guy the upper pair is pretty tiny:

In general, though, you never see abs on the average person because they get covered over almost completely by even the smallest layer of fat under the skin.
By the way why in those pics it seems like the abs get cut off horizontally.
I was drawing the top set of abs like an arrow pointing up. (I draw the stomach/abs like an oval on its side, with the top part tucking into the ribcage)
Does it differ depending on gender?

but it's really just no abs I think. It's just "ab-/like/"
But anyway that pic shows what I mean about oval shape.
Since the abs connect on top of the ribs, when they're large and flexed they'll tend to look a bit more squared off at top because they'll hide the shape of the ribs underneath. When they're thinner though they'll tend to show a rounder shape a bit more:
