Also, what caused Nocturne to be considered the third SMT, when Strange Journey is just a subtitle? That doesn't make sense to me.
Although I suppose Nocturne was referred to as Shin Megami Tensei III in Japan.

Nocturne was "III" in Japan. Some bibble-babble about SJ not being in Tokyo the reason it wasn't numbered (could just be a side project for Kaneko + Team Maniax + Etrian Odyssey engine). Aside, fandom hypothesis that Hijiri is reincarnated Aleph from SMTII connects and places it squarely after the 2nd game.
