I like your style a lot. The flat shading is done rather well, it makes you stand out from most other artists who make their artwork appear more 3D by shading loads of things rather than having flat colors and then little bits of shading.

Glad to hear that. I have always tried to make my artwork look more like 2D animation (since my inspiration comes mainly from Disney and animal cartoons) with simple coloring and shading, but still not boring-looking. :)

Well, to break the ice, I thinkd it is very bold and impressive. I feel the best thing about your works in when you draw feral, or non-anthro, canine animals. The way you grasp the beautiful and strong anatomy of wolves and medium sized dogs grabs my attention. Such anatomy is realistic or mostly close to realistic whenever your feral canine is realitic looking, have a "Wolf's rain" sort of realism, or have Western toonisms to their design. This goes especailly when they would snarl with their fangs in a dramatic picture and I could see the sharp points, slopes and dull parts of their teeth all around their mouths for me to see. You do a good job most recently with light and glowing effects, which can be inspiringly beautuiful to the soul, or hauntingly spooky and menacing. It's also neat how you would often treat any fur ruffles flying in the wind or while the animal is running even though the image is hand drawn or looks hand drawn and its flat colored.

And from what I read from your lines, I think I've somewhat succeeded in my goal of becoming a better artist. Though there's still a long way to go, especially with backgrounds.

I think I can understand the backgrounds. Looking quickly at you first gallery page so far, and my recolection of your earlier art, maybe your backgrounds may not be too impressive, even if they are not the focal point of the picture. But I do feel you're getting there in your art as posted over the past month or so, particuarly with "Hashire, Hayate!", "Flight of Icarus", "Wolf Song", "Night Fury" and you King Fang fanart. "Flight of Icarus", and the King fang fanart being my favorites for most detail and the most powerful.

After all, all good artists started not so great to getting to where they were accomplished -- Divinci, Picasso, Winslow Homer, animators of Walt Disney hand-drawn animation, Jack Kirby, and others.

What's good:
Coloring, shading, and lighting skills are quite good. You definitely show a grasp of what colors works for which characters, and when certain highlights are approporiate. In addition, I do like how you use different expressions for your characters, as I feel that some artists don't try to do this enough.

What needs improvement:
Linework could use some more depth (try to use different line thicknesses in a picture, not just one thickness for all lines). Otherwise the eyes have a harder time focusing on a specific aspect, part, or area of the piece that you as the artist think we the viewers should "close-in" on. I also think it would be beneficial to analyze some art books on canines (or animals in general) to get a better idea about their musculature and dimensions. Some of the angles for canines you've drawn don't look particularly 'appealing.' I DO appreciate how you experiment with different poses and angles, but think that working on your proportions some more would make your art become even more dynamic.

What about backgrounds:
Not too sure. Backgrounds are really up to what the artist feels is needed for the piece. Whether a simple color backdrop or something more refined/detailed will depend upon the theme or subject matter of the artwork.

I do have studied animal anatomy and such from books, photos and magazines, but of course I know I need more practise. I agree with the fact that most of the positions or angles I draw for canines (and other animals too) are not quite "right" and they need improvement.

But must keep these advices in my mind and try harder.

I myself cannot help but to comment on how well you offer constructive "here's what you need to do/ what is wrong" critique as well as praise.

You are one of a few artists to use 'ligne claire' -style with success. Creating strong lines with flat colors and looking good - it's a feat.

Älä ihmeessä ala säätämään tyyliäsi mihinkään 'suuntaan' - vaan jatka sen kehittämistä. Koska työsi jo nyt tunnistaa ensi silmäyksellä - se on tavaramerkki, jota ei saa tuhota.

Moinen nimitys (viivoitus)tyylille olikin ihan uusi miulle ja kuvaakin hyvin sitä, mitä itse olen aina tykännyt piirtää, koska se on yksinkertaista ja selkeää. Eihän mikään tietenkään estä kokeilemasta erilaisia viivoitustapoja, mutta itse olen huomannut kuitenkin ettei "sivellin"tekniikasta ole itselleni hyötyä, saatika ole mieluisa tapa.

Olen samaa mieltä Wolfbreathin kanssa siitä, että tyylisi on persoonallinen ja että tunnistettavuus on tavaramerkki. Jatka siis tyylisi kehittämistä. :3

Olen tainnut sanoa tämän kaiken ennenkin, mutta vastaanpa tähän silti. Pidän tyylistäsi, sillä se on mielenkiintoinen sekoitus sarjakuvamaisuutta, Gingaa sekä realismia. Tykkään aivan erityisesti sarjisblogistasi ja blogisi on inspiroinut minua todella paljon (haluaisin esimerkiksi, että voitaisiin joskus nähdä ja piirtää yhdessä). Olet todella hyvä piirtämään ilmeitä ja kuvaamaan hahmon tunnetilaa erilaisilla sarjakuvamaisilla keinoilla ja tämä kykysi tulee kaikista parhaiten esiin blogissasi (et varmaan blogin kanssa stressaa ja hio niin paljon kuin muiden töittesi kanssa eli tyyli on vapautunutta). Minusta sinun kannattaisi jatkossa tarttua tähän kykyysi ja kehittää erityisesti sitä.

Kaikista eniten tarvitset harjoitusta taustoissa. Taustasi ovat usein turhan yksinkertaisia ja latteita ja mielestäni tausta monessa kuvassasi hieman pilaa kuvan, sillä ero hahmon ja taustan välillä on niin räikeä. Mutta sitten taas toisaalta taustattomat kuvat ovat hieman tylsiä ja niistä tuntuu puuttuvan jotain. Sinun kannattaisi harjoitella paljon pelkän taustan piirtämistä eli piirrä maisemakuvia ja lue vaikka perspektiivien piirtämisestä kertovia kirjoja yms. Yksi kaverini oppi TODELLA hyväksi taustojen piirtäjäksi ihan parissa vuodessa lukemalla pari kirjaa ja sitten tekemällä harjoituksia kirjojen ohjeiden mukaisesti.

Sitten yksi ehkä hieman turha pointti, johon haluan puuttua. Nimittäin sheathit... Tuolla ylhäällä joku kehui niitä, mutta minua ne ovat alkaneet rasittamaan aika pahasti. Sheathin piirtäminen on hyvin yleistä tietynikäisillä ja tietynhenkisillä piirtäjillä. Sheath on vain uroksilla eli kun tekijä piirtää kaikille hahmoille sheathin, niin tämähän meinaa sitä, että hän piirtää pelkkiä uroksia. Olen havaitsevinani syrjintää ja ennakkoluuloa naaraita kohtaan. Itse haluaisin nähdä naarashahmoja useammin.

Taustat ovat ikuinen tuska. Olen mie tässä ihan hiljattain opetellut niitä paremmin piirtämään, mutta referenssien puute yleensä pilaakin sitten monet niistä. Tattista tuosta kirjavinkistä, pitänee käväistä joskus kirjastossa.

Noh, itse tykkään piirtää mieluummin uroshahmoja (syystä, jota en oikeastaan tiedosta?), mutta tulee tuota raapusteltua narttujakin. En vain yleensä tule julkaisseeksi niitä kun ovat vaan jotain luonnossuttuja tms. Voisin blogiin toki postailla joskus. :)
Tyyliin se on piirtynyt itselläni realismin kautta kun en halua piirtää kastroituja disney-koiria (riippuu tosin ihan tyylistä jo sitten).
