It can be done fairly cheap depending on how far away the con is. You can get in to most cons with a basic "Attending" level for under $40.00 if you preregister. Expect at least $10.00 more if you pay at the door. Single day passes seem to run $20.00 at many cons. You need to eat at least two meals a day. Actual meals, not snacks. There will usually be a hospitality room, but that's meant for snacks and drinks, not your primary food source. You can either budget for eating out twice a day minimum or if you're staying at the hosting hotel, you can bring food with you. Check first to be sure the rooms have a refrigerator and microwave.
Beyond that it's nice to have a little extra for art commissions and to buy goodies from the dealers den, and of course there's usually a charity auction, but these are not required expenses. Travel and hotel expenses will vary obviously. Many furs choose to share rooms and divide the cost based on how many are sharing. As an example, if you were coming to FangCon this weekend and preregistered, and let's say room sharing with a total of four including yourself, you'd be paying right about $90.00 for registration and lodging. Just figure in meals and travel and there you have it.
