Movie tiem! - Review for
Ok, so I got my netflix in today, and I had ordered two of my classic faves, along with one new film, that I had yet to see.
The two I have seen, of course, were Equilibrium [Fahrenheit 451 meets the Matrix], and House of Flying Daggers [a Chinese, Crouching Tiger-esque love tragedy].
The third, is a movie called Casshern. Its bassed on an old anime from the 70's, called "Shinzo Ningen Casshân". [Which I am now interested in finding and watching.]
Now, when I first put the movie in and hit play, I have to admit, I was only slightly interested, because I had NO idea what to expect. I thought this was going to be some Japanese style zombie flick. But it was nothing like that at all. About 15 minutes in, I was hooked, and just STARED. In fact, it was a live action, anime action/drama style movie, with the perfect balance of physical and emotional tension.
The script wasn't as compelling as it could be, but I suppose that is because it was very realistic in the way the people spoke; to the point, and simple. The story line was just completely curious. It had a real Akira/Wolfs Rain feeling to it.
While real people were used for the characters to give it a homely feeling, the backgrounds and scenes were done with a lot of BEAUTIFULLY crossed anime art/CG type work, which put you under the impression that this could not POSSIBLY be "our world"; this leaves you torn to decide if you should or should not relate.
All the characters were like-able, from the young, tender-hearted, but lost hero, to the confused, raging antagonist [who really turns out to be the best written of all the characters.] There weren't really any good or bad guys in it. It was just different people, with different views, all striving selfishly in the attempt to be selfless.
The end is gut-wrenching, but heart-warming, and is something many people can relate to; just wanting to start over.
I SERIOUSLY recommend this movie if you are looking for something good to just settle on the couch in the dark with a big bowl of popcorn.
Give it a watch guys!
