The owner decided he didn't want to deal with the union anymore and closed the company.

The unions basically fucked the company over, so Hostess was just like "okay fuck you I'm going home" and closed up it's plants and is in liquidation. Technically this means another company could buy up the assets and continue production, which is likely what'll happen.

That's balls. But I do hope another company picks it up. Twinkies were OK, but man those chocolate cupcakes are the bees knees. And those powdered doughnuts. I get those all the time.

Hostess has been in bankruptcy for about five years; the health food craze HAS cut into their sales and they made some bad business decisions in the early 2000's. Then the baker's union went on strike and just broke that camel's back. Hostess is currently in the process of closing down plants and distribution centers and the brands such as Twinkies are for sale. With as iconic as Twinkies are, one of Hostess's competitors will probably buy it.
