Tonight I saw a very dark, depressing movie from the 1980s. It was rather harsh on the characters, almost a wonder how it had a happy ending. The main characters were separated from their caretaker for a very long time. After coming to grips with the idea that he had forever gone, they search out to find him. The journey is filled with moments of dying minor characters and insane beings driven mad by the horrible things they've witnessed in the prison they were damned for eternity in.

I suggest watching it in the dark alone for maximum effect, the suspense and depression will leave you wondering what the hell is the point of living. Here's a poster of that movie.
