Hello everyone,
Welcome once again to the Circle.
Since we feel that we've let the Spirits discussion run its course, we thought we'd put in a journal that you can either take seriously or as an opportunity to let your mind run wild with theories. Though we caution you not to let your mind run wild endlessly, as this particular topic may have so many options that you'll be thinking about them all for days.
I'm talking about the "End of the World".
Many people believe that 21/12/2012 will be the end of us all.
So here's our questions to you:
1) Do you believe the world will end?

The sun also won't end as a black hole. It doesn't have enough mass for that.
It will explode as a supernova though as a result of it collapsing in on itself after it ran out of fuel. That happens to all stars.

- we might kill ourselves off or be killed off by something, but the "world" will merrily carry on without us

- it's a bunch of dingo's kidneys (no offense to any dingo characters out there). Earth is not yet aligned with the "center of the galaxy" (the "great procession" isn't due for a while yet, and even then it's at best an estimation). Far as I can tell, even if it did/does, nothing will happen anyway.
And even if it does end, it's not like I'm gonna be able to do much :D
However, it all depends on what you would see as an "end".
For example, the earth will be destroyed once the sun swells up to a red giant. Life on earth will be impossible earlier than that though because it will become VERY hot here a couple of million years before the sun's diameter actually surpasses the earth's orbit.
When we are talking about the end of the universe we have no idea yet how it is gonna happen. Most scenarios are built upon entropy. The laws of thermodynamics demand that every system will reach a level of maximum entropy sooner or later. In the case of the universe that would mean that all matter and all energy would be perfectly evenly distributed. The overall concentration of mass and energy would be too low for any stars or planets to form, the universe would be completely dark. This is called "heat death".
Another idea is the "big crunch", the idea that one day gravity will win against dark energy and the universe will start to collapse on itself.
And yet another idea says that one day the universe will expand past a point at which the laws of physics won't work anymore.
The heat death theory is the most popular one though because it works in both a closed and an open universe.
When will the world end exactly? I have no idea. We can't know that exactly right now. And to be honest, I don't want to waste my time with such a depressing thought^^

I personally don't believe the world will end any time soon.
Why?
Because mankind has tried to predict its own end for a long time and every estimate has been wrong so far. Also, there may be proof of us damaging our planet, but there's nothing that tells us we'll all die in ten years unless we do something drastic like nuke each other.
What I believe to be more plausible is that we'll either boil to a crisp thanks to our star. Or that we'll live on for many years trying to predict our own end until the point where technology no longer allows for doomsday scenarios (as far as people will be aware).
What about 21/12/2012?
I think it's hilarious. And it's the first "end of the world" prediction I've known to make so many people speak about it if not believe it.
If nothing else, it has brought us many parties and laughs in the name of something that didn't make sense to begin with.

I cannot wait for 22/12/2012 - although it is a good idea to be prepared for disasters (in the sense that it's a good idea to have first aid kits, working smoke alarms, flood insurance, etc.) being paranoid is not helpful. There is absolutely nothing that anyone can do to prevent the end of the world, so worrying about it is futile.
Of course... but not the 21st.

If the human race hasn't destroyed it then... cosmic and seismic activity with the earths core causing poles to shift, making the world unstable.

The mayan calendar never counted leap years. They did not believe in them. Therefore, we should have died months ago!
5) if not) What do you believe is a more plausible occurence?
That the world will start riots and there will be a lot more babies, most of them from teenagers. "Mother of god...."

It's just a date on a mayan calendar. It did not specify that the world will end that day and it's 110% true no ifs ands or buts!

1) Do you believe the world will end? Yes, everything comes to an end eventually.
2) (if so) When do you believe the world will end? Approximately a billion years time.
3) (if so) How do you believe the world will end? While the sun will last another 5 billion years, it is thought that the increasing temperature of the sun will render Earth inhospitable to life between 750 million and 1 billion years from now.
4) (if not) Why do you believe the world won't end? It's possible that the descendants of humanity will develop technology to a level where apocalypses are no longer possible.
5) if not) What do you believe is a more plausible occurence? Humanity will either extinguish itself and all other life or learn to live in harmony with the natural world.
6) What's your view on the whole 21/12/2012 thing? I don't know, something could happen, but it definitely won't be the end of the world that's for sure.
I don't believe the world will end on December 21st, 2012.
What I think might happen on that day is that the world will begin to drastically change, and it come to resemble something akin to the Shadowrun tabletop game setting; in other words, the supernatural will become manifest. I think that if it will happen, the event will begin with fire in the skies, and life will become increasingly strange after that.
Having said that, I understand that I don't have credible evidence to back up my conjecture. I simply wish to be forthright in my opinions on the matter, and I hope you all will respect the spirit of open discussion and avoid personal attacks.

Not this year, not in our lifetimes.

I believe it will end simply when the ability to give life stops. I'm not really sure about overpopulation, but something like that.

This year is a massive spiritual awakening, We all have noticed this, for those of us already awakened, we have made an ascension. Once the specific awakening occurs, and it may not be the 21st specifically, The world will become a more positive place, however, those on the dark side will also see this as an advantage. As they say, history repeats itself. Those who do not learn will continue on like drones. Those who have learned will change their lives for the better, plain and simple. I don't think we will see a lot of spiritual manifestation, but we may meet with outsiders.

Its a giant hoax that has scared a lot of people, there is some spiritual significance, but the Mayans could not have known we would make it this far. They just didn't feel it was necessary to continue making more calendars. Remember 1999? They thought it would end then to.
And again, there will not planet that be aligned or something like that. But think about for the 21: its the first day of winter, and so it mean the longest night of the year (or shortest day depending on how you prefer to see it).
And what will bother me for the 21, its how people will react about it. Will there be commotion? I fear that. I also saw a lot of people not wanting to go work, nor to go to school.
After the 21st, we will be adding a new journal to discuss another topic!
It won't have anything to do with the end of the world or the aftermath of the prediction. Rest assured.
But it IS designed to provoke thought.
