Not QUITE back online yet, but I need to start Iron Artist II soon (still going by the 30-day rule, and I need to wrap up by FC2013). Look for details of that shortly.
At any rate, this is just one topic that's timely at the moment.
People have often asked me why I only listen to female singers (especially on LJ, where this was more evident).
The simple answer is that top 40-based men, on average, are terrible singers (strictly referring to vocal talent--songwriting, instrument playing, genre, etc, do not matter much to me).
I'm well aware there are ladies with little vocal skill on the top 40 also, but generally there are heavy efforts to conceal this--autotune, vocal doubling, heavy instruments, a full choir of backup singers. With guys, it seems to be perfectly permissible to leave a flat voice front and center. Out of respect for people's tastes, I won't name many names, but let's face it; even Britney Spears can hit a note better than, say, Bob Dylan.
There's plenty of arguments over what is considered a "good" singer, so my acid test is this: Can you picture them singing "O Holy Night" WITHOUT LAUGHING?I think that's a fair test; it's an unbiased traditional song (whereas anyone can marginally squawk through two notes required by a song they penned themselves) which requires reasonable range and sustained notes.
I've been told this is an unfair test, and yet even though I don't really buy holiday albums, I can name at least a dozen pop-crossover women who have recorded versions of it (including Jessica Simpson and Avril Lavigne, if you can believe it). Other than...I don't know, Michael Buble or Il Divo, I can't think of many guys who could pass, let alone expect someone to purchase their version.
Just thought I'd bring this up now since I can never remember to mention it when it's the season for holiday music. It'd feel weird discussing it in August!
Thoughts?

But I can see where you're coming from. Most guys in modern music either talk their way through shoddy lyrics or whine some fake-angst anthem that makes it doubly hard to listen to. The ladies tend to get more parts that have sweeping vocals and more active inflections, so I kind of wonder how much industry expectation keeps fueling that divide.
It's an interesting point that it might just be the industry. Still, though, from what little I see of street performers, Youtube, and reality shows, men don't even seem to be trying much of the time.
And let's face it, most male pop stars besides Adam Lambert shy away from THAT image.
Actually, I wonder if I just answered my own question as to why so many of them are such poor singers. Is that on purpose or else they'll be labeled gay, and not get any girls?
I DO like your singing voice, I wish I'd heard more of it
Still, I like to think if I sang some bass, baritone or tenor piece to you in Russian, you would at least pay attention for a little while
Yes, but I did specify *pop* singers And why HAVEN'T you before, hmmm????
Still, I know guys who CAN sing (my high school had a performing arts magnet, so it was filled with theatre-bound guys), they just don't seem to be the ones who get record contracts.
I miss men like Bing Crosby and Dean Martin...
Yeah...Top 40 wouldn't give them the time of day now, it seems o.0
I have some of Lara Fabian's stuff, though I'm not familiar w/Ms Westenra. Will check her out later!
You heading to FC again this year? Sadly I can't go, I'm shipping out to Alaska on the 8th. Hope ya have a great time though!~
Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! D-: Erf...well, maybe next time?
Thx!
Yup, next time for sure. Unfortunately due to an early Spring Semester every year I likely won't be able to attend until 2016... but it's all good!
Anytime, chief! Take it easy!~
2016??? Yikes @.@ Well, I'm sure I'll still be around then, it's too close to NOT go!
And I'll have to check that link later >.>
Speaking of women and singing and uh, sparkles... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ejf_tqPJ_E
<_< Manly dudes who like girly things ftw! :p
Interesting that you somehow ended up listening to da ladies, though o.0
But yeah, I can tell if someone (male or female) is a good singer or not. But I never pay much attention to them, when I listen to songs I really focus on the music ^.^
See, a bad singer would ruin the best song (as I've found via the magic of cover songs. Oy).
Or a more recent example: that chick who covered "I Follow Rivers"... I don't know whether she'd passed your test or not, but I definitely prefer the original by that dude.
Er...don't know that song? o.0
...Yeah probably.
Anyway I don't really listen to any specific artist in general, I much prefer to enjoy songs over artists,.. ya know? ^^
As someone who barely listens to popmusic, I don't even know who would be in the top ten right now. So it is a bit hard to say if there are male singers that could pass your test ^^;
From the bands I listen to, there would be some that would pass your test but they are definitely not (international) top 40.
Some metal. Here I would say it is about 70:30. Some guys in power metal bands have a good chance to pass your test, I'd say. Van Canto (german acapella metal band) would pass.
Video game music - usually no singing here
Some punk... no, just no. The lead singer from two of the popular band here (Die Ärzte and Die toten Hosen) yes.
Some lounge music - yes, everyone!
I think Robbie Williams should pass your test. Is he still popular enough for top 40?
The only song Williams made that really crossed over to the US was Millenium... based on just that I can't say I'm too impressed (Iunno if he could do the high notes) but I don't have enough knowledge to judge him with.
Huh, now I thought he was well known in the US. Here in Europe he is one of the most famous singers.
Then again, it's my opinion that pop music is just crap, in general. I know of a few metal singers who I can picture singing O Holy Night pretty well.
I cannot think of many superstar female singers who have gotten more criticism for a lack of vocal talent than Ms Spears...possibly Paula Abdul.
Meanwhile, I can think of TONS of male singers who can't carry a tune...again, I was treading lightly to avoid offending anyone, but I believe even Mr. Dylan's fans agree his voice is lacking, so I dug him up as an example.
So my point is, if Britney Spears is the worst voice you can come up with as a woman and still get a record contract, you're not doing THAT badly. Meanwhile, as a male, you can dreg the bottom of the barrel a lot harder as a singer.
Fair enough, and some of them have had some crossover success I imagine?
And, that's exactly why I said that Dylan is an unfair example, as even his fans know he doesn't have a good voice; everyone knows it. But anyway, I think I see your point. Personally, I may make fun of some of the female pop singers, but I do respect their talent. Lady Gaga can be really fucking weird, but she can really sing. I suppose it just comes to difference in musical taste.
Well, I think Britney's fans are pretty aware she doesn't either. I've seen plenty of concert reviews commenting you aren't shelling out the bucks to watch her *sing*.
And yeah, I know my tastes are pretty rare, based on how few people I can trade music with XD
(FYI: Intentional would be songs like Smell Yo Dick and Just Had Sex, unintentional would include the lyrics "I bang cock in bangkok" and every misinterpreted lyric in existance).
Though I think women would probably be better at singing since they bother to have talent so no one can prove they're just untalented eye candy, while men are never discouraged from being untalented and only being popular for dressing provocatively or really stupid.
Possibly, yah. Though I've hardly seen any men dressing provocatively. I wouldn't mind a few more, honestly.
Well, now that I think about it, most of those men are rappers or back-up dancers to a female pop singer. So I take that previous comment back.
Mmmmm....backup dancers!
I bet that leads to a lot of people asking why you're listening to a song about "Blank" when you're in a place were talking about "blank" is offensive or makes no sense.
Mmmmmmmeh....
Body builders, now those are the men you want mmm...

I just choose this example, because this guy's band is one I recently rediscovered.
Much of what I listen to is European symphonic Metal (Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Xandria, Within Temptation) and 'power' metal (Rhapsody, Sabaton), many of which have very skilled male and female singers.
I'm not fond of Death metal, or any other form of 'music' that consists of randomly hammering at your instruments while bellowing/snarling into a microphone (Cannibal Corpse, most Metallica).
To each, his own.
I imagine you've seen the Youtube vid of a metal band that used a parrot as their lead singer? XD
And you're right that male singers don't seem to need vocal talent nowadays. No idea why. It could be the subject of their songs or just a cultural thing that gives people lower expectations for men.
Since you're doing another iron artist soon, I'd better start thinking of ways to torment fluffy kitties
You'd think they could at least be marginally attractive @.@
Just posted about that!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSUFzC6_fp8 - Gorgeous rendition of Carol of the Bells (and yes, the lead on this is gay)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlJey9K8Iz4 - Rendition of Dog Days are Over for the Sing Off, a reality TV show they won to get their contract in the first place

They've written their own music as well on their EP. Love me some Pentatonix. And I hear their Christmas tunes on the radio on occasion, so you know they've made it then.
I don't deny there's plenty of good a capella singers. One of my good buds in high school (who indirectly inspired the Class Menagerie) was on his college's lead a capella group. But that very, VERY seldom breaks into the pop scene.
You like any Gotye?
His song "Save Me" you might like

Well then how about Adam Young of owl city? He doesn't quite have the range of say Adam Lambert but he's got good voice quality and a fair amount of vocal confidence and I love the mental imagery his music and lyrics give. He's straight, at least he chases girls, even thougn 90% of his fans are gay or girls... if rumer is true that is. I'm gay and listen to him, that's for sure. Darn stereotypes. His latest album is the best by far, check this song out of you get the chance;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuJTh0uqzHo
Oh, and though I haven't heard him sing holy night I have heard him sing 'in Christ alone ' and is a sweat song even if you aren't religious, so I imagine he could do a pretty decent job of 'holy night'
Any way, it's probably clear that I'm an owl city groupie. Great post btw!
Thanks for the post though, this was awesome to see all the feedback! It's one way to hear about different music! And yes, it got me thinking. Thanks again!
but then people say i am soo anal about my music
BUT! I was imagining what these counter-examples would sound like, and some of them are really interesting in my mind's ear. They wouldn't be ringing and clear like female singers often are, but nonetheless I would love to be able to hear some of these versions of O Holy Night for real:
David Bowie
Freddie Mercury / Queen
Sting
Bruce Springsteen
Cee-Lo Green
Jared Leto / 30 Seconds to Mars
Willie Nelson
So thanks for putting that into my brain!
And I don't know if I'd really consider Nelson part of top 40.
Bowie and Green probably could manage, I guess, though is Bowie recording anymore? Not familiar enough with Springsteen or Leto's voicals.
But I'm sorry...Sting?! I am nearly positive he doesn't have the range. Or at least, from what I've heard it would be a horrific strain (ie, All For Love).
