With the final round of Damian's tournament going up in a few days at
bogrim's page, now is as good a time as any for a very overdue update!
In case it's not obvious by now, due to some delays in Damian's tournament, the slow pace of incoming character artwork for our event, and other considerations, Zephyr's tournament has been delayed until January or February of 2013. We will work to have it begin as soon as possible.
All of the arenas are finished and will be posted shortly barring more revisions that may come up. We have two new combatants with finished art whose abilities are in the final stages of review, and they will be posted shortly. We also have one new combatant with a finished ability and art well in progress. We are still waiting on many more combatants and will post them as they are completed and sent to us.
Behind the scenes, the committee members (spearheaded in this effort by
cyran) have been working on a new glossary of terms to help explain the battle system, which will be posted on the event blog and linked to here once it is complete. This includes an explanation of specific effects that can be included in character abilities. To go with this new glossary, we have been reviewing combatant's abilities to make sure they are balanced through a 5-point system. This means most of the existing abilities posted on the page will be revised, and may cause a delay in the posting of new combatants. We are doing our best to make this a quality event and are uncomfortable with rushing through systems or abilities which may not be optimal, so we apologize for the delay and ask for your understanding.

About the next, open tournament: Admission will be capped to a certain number of characters, but it will not be first-come, first-serve. There will be a period of time during and after Zephyr's tournament in which submissions will be open. Barring any quality concerns in the character (poor or nonexistent summary, unbalanceable ability, improper stats), all submitted entries will be assigned a number based on order of receipt. If more submissions are received than there are places in the tournament roster, those who will not be included will be selected randomly through Random.org or a similar service. So that people do not waste time or money on art for a character that does not get in, initial submissions will only require the name, stats, ability, and summary/description of your character. There will be a period to obtain artwork after the selected entrants are announced. If someone in the roster must drop out before the tournament begins, their spot will be offered to a randomly selected member of the group that did not get in. We have not yet decided on a final size for the roster, but 48 and 64 are two numbers we've been throwing around, and the final roster will probably not be too far off.
Although doubles matches will not exist in Zephyr's tournament, the committee is currently discussing whether or not they will be included in the open tournament. Feedback is welcomed on this matter, although having doubles will likely not increase the final size of the roster by much if at all.
Any further feedback or questions are, as always, welcomed.

Since the entries will be capped this time, I assume that means there'll be no tag-team matches? That also makes me a bit worried that all my guys won't make the cut, as I plan on entering three characters this time (one returning and two new entries). Crossing my fingers!
Also Croup I'm guessing Slab will be one of your 3 characters next to Slake?
And ooh, does that mean that Fe5ter and Norug-gul may be making a comeback?
Correct but just so you know Norug-gul will have a more evolved appearance and his ability will become even more troubling for his opponents thanks to a few 'improvements' Prof. Mize made after analyzing that match in the Frozen Wastelands for some time, figuring out methods to make the alien more of a threat
And I look forward to seeing Norug-gul's new properties. Perhaps we'll meet in battle at some point. ;]
Hope the new effect for "Dead Zone" will be allowed and also wonder if the Tournament committee will put a limit on canines (especially wolves) in this one? Really need the new winner to be something other than a wolf. -____-
And more variety in the roster is always a good thing IMO
I'm assuming that Slake is the returning character of yours, correct?
I'm also thinking about entering three characters (or however many the cap serves), and it's pretty nerve wracking to pick between my characters, and the cap probably won't help matters when it comes to making decisions. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
It wouldn't be a big deal, except both Immelmann and Deathweaver's abilities seem WAY more powerful. Perhaps if Immelmann's ink skill took some time to reform when destroyed, rather than returning instantly? Not sure how Deathweaver's effect might be rebalanced.
And yep, planning on bringing Slake back. Expect a new outfit and a new, more mature, much less cocky attitude!
Good luck on getting your three in! Man, this cap is gonna make things more nerve-wracking for a while!
If doing tag-team matches won't allow for an increased roster, it's tough to say whether they're worth being kept in. On the one hand, it's great if you're partnered with someone you form a good bond of teamwork with, and it also lets the tournament progress a lot faster (as two fighters would get eliminated each round). On the other hand, I'd imagine it's a real pain if you're partnered with a character you don't care for or whose ability doesn't have good synergy with yours. Tough call!
I just have no idea who to go with yet. Onyx knows of my possible roster. Speaking of multiple characters though, I was wondering about that. I might have missed this in previous comments, but can one person have several characters entered like in the last tournament? I can understand it for filling out the brackets, but obviously if you have enough people wanting to enter would you prevent someone with one character from joining in favor of someone that already has other characters entered? Assuming they are both viable entrants.
If I had the money for it, I'd enter several champs, though with how tight things are right now I doubt I'll be able to. XD
As for doubles, that is a tricky thing. Like with before, if there are random tag teams and tag teams where people picked their partners, you're going to have some teams that work amazingly together and others that just don't. I'm not much of a fan of tag teams for that reason. I think people should get by on their own and not cause they got really lucky in partners or just set themselves up to be awesome together.
That being said, I do like Kignman's idea to have tag team abilities as well as ones per character. For the team battles I think there should be one ability to be looked at. It should be stronger than a single ability and it should be an interesting combination of the two characters. I think it would be neat if the teams took time to decide how their powers would combine and work off each other. Pending approval of course. Or if the committee found a good way to combine them depending how how teams are picked.
I'd rather not have any hadokens or water bending in future tournaments.
Just an option for those who can't draw or afford someone else.
