New Year's Resolutions -- Do you believe in them?

I spent some time yesterday to craft some resolutions for 2013. Most of these aim to get my stripy butt in gear in specific ways I've been lax or non-committal.
Exercise makes the list, but honestly who's list is it NOT on? Plus mundane things like keeping ontop of chores and checkbook balances. The most significant resolution on my list is to participate less. That's right... I spent the year joining everything I could fit in the schedule -- fur meets, gamer meets, volunteer work, etc. My resolution is to participate LESS. Instead, I resolve to be more attentive to, and do more on behalf of, the good relationships in my life. I want to join less and give back more, if that makes any sense.
I also have a repeat goal from last year, that I intent to be serious about this time and invest in it: To retrain myself and change jobs.
2013 can be the best year yet, and I'll do my part to make it a great year.
Some folks consider resolutions a silly venture. What's your take? How do you go about them?
