A plea for help from the computerishly minded: ACIII problem
12 years ago
Now, when I'm not ruling an empire with a grip of iron, tormenting some unfortunate, or generally being the insane gryphon that I am, I like PC gaming. In particular, the most excellent series Assassin's Creed, which I have fallen in love with over the past year. Therefore, when a friend of mine offered to buy me the third installment via Steam, I was delighted. (Still ate him, but anyway...)
However, delight was but a cruel fantasy, as the game is simply not working. I have reinstalled it several times, scrolled through any support I can find, and the problem has not stopped. It's very, very frustrating.
Henceforth, this is an appeal for aid. If someone does manage to give me the crucial recommendation of what to change or what part needs upgrading, and it works, they'll get a free short story commission (Up to 3,500 words, say) from me as expression of gratitude. I'd really like to get this working. Thank you for any help you can give.
Problem is as follows:
I bought the game via Steam, and it seemed to download and install perfectly well. I didn't play it immediately, waiting a couple of days before I first tried to launch the game from my Steam library. I immediately recieved a message (after the note about the product code) saying "Preparing to launch Assassin's Creed III" - all as usual. This then changed after half a second to
"Performing first time setup
Installing UplayInstaller.exe (Step 1 of 1)"
This remained for a couple of seconds (during which my status did not change to "in-game") and then vanished, upon which my status did change to "in-game"... for about two seconds, when it changed back to "online" (but not playing anything). The game did not launch.
I have tried this again and again, even reinstalling the entire game, but it continues to yield exactly the same results - including the "first time setup" notes. Uplay Installer certainly does seem to be installed - I've done it myself, and checked through the folders for it - but there is indisputably no change.
I've been able to play the first four Assassin's Creed Games with no difficulty at all, there is certainly enough space, the files are definitely installed, and I'm fairly certain my computer's systems are up to it. Yet the problem persists.
Below is what the diagnostics programme ctells me are the computer's systems, if the info is helpful.

For this specific issue, it sounds like uplay is getting in the way. I hear bad things about it but I've never had to deal with it so who knows.
What precisely is a DRM, may I ask?
