==ADMINS AND TICKETS
First off, we'd like to open this update with an apology. Towards the end of 2012, we had some staff changes that left FA understaffed. Because of this, there was a backlog of tickets that began to mount. There's no excuse for that. We let things slip.
We apologize to those who waited on responses, and none came in a timely manner. We're intent on turning over a new leaf, and providing better service in every aspect of the site. As such, we put out a call for new admins and received over 750 applications. Of that, we narrowed it down to our top 40, and have so far recruited several new staffers to help bring the queue down and provide better service.
In the past two weeks, we've successfully closed over 1,600 tickets, reducing our backlog by over half. We're working on slaying that other half. In the past 90 days, over 4,500 tickets have been closed in total.
We're working on improving the site, and so far 2013 is off to a good start.
For those wondering, here are the new admins:
asianeko
keio
jasufox
sheepdust
odin36519
helperdog
moskintia
nerosilent
More admins are coming in, too, but are still going through initiation. We'll update the staff page in a few days as admins come out of training.
==FA EXTENSIONS
Recently, we have been forced to take action against people using several abusive extensions. These extensions have a tendency to spam the site with excessive requests. There are two known extensions causing problems at this time: the "FA Status" extension for Chrome and the "Fur Affinity Mobile" app for Android. These apps are NOT supported by the site, and their use can potentially result in suspension or IP banning.
In the mean time, if you are using these apps we highly encourage users to STOP use immediately. We are willing to work with users who are suspended in such manner.

Too bad FA has expressed no concern in fixing this bug in either Android or Apple devices stating that the only true browser they support is newer versions of Internet Explorer (and I believe chrome/firefox but I could be wrong)
Guess FA is hoping furs don't have enough money to buy a phone.
Have you found a fix? I hate it. :L
I can confirm this working on my tablet. Also, both the stock 4.2 browser and Dolphin have the in-line link problem.
I don't even bother with the broken menu anymore; I just go to my message center via bookmarking on my phone.
Most sites tend to think those browsing a mobile version want some quick features or limited access, but you can do a mobile version that is just a mobile-formatted layout. It's just a shame most are too lazy to actually do such a thing.

This is a problem?
So in other words:
"Weasyl isn't made just for furries, so I'm not going to join."
That seems pretty pretentious to me...
It's only easier to make money here because there are MORE people. If people realized, hey, this site is fucked up, and went over to another site, like Weasyl for example, the it would be easier to make money over there.
Besides, everyone I've talked to at Weasyl have been nothing but nice, so I dunno where your getting your information from.
That said, if you would like to discuss feel free to send a note to Dragoneer.
FA Status has a flaw in that it runs for every single tab that a user has open. So, if a user opens 20 FA tabs, FA Status runs 20 times, and every time it pings the site, those requests start adding up.
Seriously furries, you should be thankful, if any. Sure, FA has seen a lot of ups and downs, but all in all, it could have been much worse than what it actually has turned into. A lot of things are changing for the better currently and that's also a major transition on the site. But instead of being happy about good news for a change and thanking those responsible for the change, you're still just being bitching douche bags.
FA Status isn't a program made by FA either and that's what got stated to be flawed in this scenario. If your biggest concern in life is a cosmetic flaw when browsing FA on your phone, wow...
Trust me, I do want FA to move ahead codewise but it's still stagnant due to Yak's tight grip and recruit policies.
Weasyl actually took up the offer from various people and thus.. well. You can see the results.
I have been getting the 'having a hard time processing requests' - I use chrome, yes, but no extensions. Am I okay with what I am doing? Or...what? lol
Give us a way to get information without scraping the site. Since FA is the epicenter of the furry community (online at least) this only seems appropriate. Saying "we don't support it" and leaving programmers to their own devices is what's causing this.
As such, screenshots are not a valid form of evidence.
Shouldn't that be a feature that you include when the site is launched? Not several years after creation, that's just slacking.
Yes, it should be a feature that you include when the site is launched. It's actually a must-have feature.
because unless you're willing to put your money where your mouth is, all that this comment is is a whine.
I am basically pointing out that FA Staff is extremely poor and un-organized and needs a complete reshuffle in fact, a new owner and the lot. Not some owner who bans people for providing fair criticism
I think your reason for disliking the site is unwarranted.
i was... and in the last two years most "downtimes" have been very minor. the major ones that i have noticed were because of hardware issues and they were fixed within a week at most.
stop being so bloody melodramatic.
satisfied customers rarely speak up... dissatisfied customers will make sure you know WHY they're dissatisfied... and more often than not will come up with the silliest reasons to justify their anger. i've worked in customer service, technical support and customer relations/retention and i've seen it happen with my own eyes.
And though FA has had it's slip-ups, a lot of the complaints that you probably came across are more than likely to have been over-inflated for dramatic purposes or people with a vested interest in seeing FA fall on it's ass.
personally, i've had my moment on both sides of the spectrum... there were times when i was wholly dissatisfied with how FA was doing it's thing... but that was in the past when there were issues which really bothered me (some of them quite legitimate imo.) but if i had left, i would not have been around to see them pull their socks up.
if you have been directly affected by problems, instead of just complaining, try and have them resolved. if it's an issue with tickets that have been left for months of inactivity, try contacting a moderator directly?
a customer (and that is essentially what we all are here) can not reasonably expect the company to be able to fix things if they aren't aware there is a problem... and bottling them up and then exploding later never solves anything (and it causes stress which doesn't need to happen.)
so, keep that in mind... if you want the site to succeed (as i do as i will admit i have a vested interest in using it as a platform to advertise my video-games) then that means you have to be willing to take the smallest steps to try and help them do that. it's like littering... if you see a wrapper on the ground and there is no park-cleanup person around, instead of accusing the park-staff of incompetence, why not just pick it up and toss it in a garbage can?
Just DO SOMETHING already.
Seriously.
Walk a mile in their shoes.
Or just shut the fuck up.
Do you want to provide any evidence for your rant?
It is plain obvious that FA team is both corrupted and bias , since when have we even heard anything new coming from these guys at all? All we have been getting is bullshit excuses as to why they are not implementing new features
EXAMPLE: Report button, why the fuck is that shit not added on day one? Apparently according to some admins from a while back "too much money
that's why it's the main hub of most furry socialization and art-sharing.
totally ruined, yep yep... Why can't they just do what Furnation did?... waitaminute...
Look at some of the most recent comments "I'm still waiting on a response for submissions made about 5 years ago." that is how bad the admins are. 5 years and no response. Still on web 1.0 technology, no report button, admins lazy around. Yup, seems about right for this site in terms of "community cooperation"
sometimes things fall through the cracks... and while i will admit that is a bad thing it does happen.
I think you're being just a tad melodramatic about this whole thing.
FA team is like politics, no matter what you vote for or do, still can't be trusted.
but, you haven't been here very long and i have... and in that time i've seen drastic improvement in how this site is run. sure, it isn't perfect... i doubt any site can claim that title though... but it is improving.
so, stop being such a drama-queen.
or, that's probably what a good deal of people ought to say... given that it seems they need something to be angry with and FA just happens to be it.
i mean, you can easily expect a place like Conceptart.org or DeviantArt to have a top-notch system in place but they actually have a lot of people working for them (and some are even paid... which is the main difference here... the team don't get paid, it's all voluntary.)
expectations are one thing... expectations with little grounding in practicality are another.
If he wants to keep the staff relatively small for the thousands and thousands of users for the website, that ball is in his court.
There are people that are more than willing to help keep FurAffinity functioning, or..you know, giving it an actual real update instead of the small knick-knacks we've been getting here and there as of late, but again, the ball is in Dragoneer's court.
I recall people from Furocity (Can't spell), or another site with a similar name, that was going to merge with FA, so that both teams would be getting the fruits of the benefits from having a much larger staff working together, and they pulled anchor from some shit that went down.
I don't know, I'm just not with FA admins on some levels of support. Granted, yeah, there's a couple of them that really get the job done, but it just seems like over the years (I've been on FA since the website first launched) of being promised a lot of things, and seeing nothing from those promises, I just tend to...not believe what is being advertised anymore.
but i think the biggest issue here is that Dragoneer himself seems like he's not that big of a fan of being the bad guy sometimes... and i can understand that but sometimes you kinda have to be the bad guy to keep your employees (paid or not) in check. i'm not saying he's a lesser person because of it, it's just a guess really but that guess does seem to have some weight to it given the times when mods and admins have behaved in a manner that would get them fired from a real job (all the way to abusing the rules, deigning not to follow them when it suited them, lording their status over their peers and users, etc... ) it's one reason why i really do think that this site ought to have an H.R. position... someone to take the stress off of him so that the H.R. person can be the bad guy while he can keep on doing what he likes to do. less stress for him, he can rest assured that the site will remain operational, bad employees will be dealt with and everyone's happy.
but again, it's not that i think he's unfit or a bad guy, i just don't think he's happiest when he has to be the bad guy (and it kinda shows, well, to me it does.) which is why i do think an H.R. department/person would be a good addition to the team.
that being said, it can't be denied that things aren't running as smoothly as people expect them to (assuming we ignore the unreasonable and unrealistic expectations.) and that's likely the main reason why this site gets so much criticism... but, if you've been here from the start, you can't deny that things have been getting better bit by bit... slowly, but still (and the fact that people have been doing it for free is pretty impressive when you really think about it.)
As I said; Walk a mile in their shoes before complaining.
Having been an admin elsewhere, I know how much flak these people get. For no reason at all.
So, yes. I am defending the people who keep this site running.
If you don't like what you see here, go elsewhere or build your own site. It's as simple as that.
Currently, this happens:
+ Ticket 14679 - X Stole art!
+ Ticket 14680 - This art is stolen from X!
+ Ticket 14681 - Y is reposting X's art without permission!
+ Ticket 14682 - Someone stole my art!
Each of these must be individually processed and read. One admin might take one while another takes the other and create a big mess. Important information could be spread among them all.
The "report" button would group these all together, like this:
+ Submission 98974654 was reported for art theft 4 times
+ AnArtist added the following comment:
"That's my art from here! [link]"
+ ConcernedUser added the following comment:
"That's AnArtist's art!"
Or even better
+ A comment by BadUser has been reported as harassment:
"u r a terrible person"
It would work nothing like the current system.
Also:
Also, I have been working on a text story site a la yiffstar and a few other corporate social websites.. so I have _DONE_ this. Getting it integrated into FA is an FA problem, not a skill problem.
GLaDOS would be proud.
But seriously, yeah, the button could save the page sourcecode as it existed exactly, rather than being a directive link to the source.
For the site I used to work on we'd pull the data (generally all of the comments the reported user has made on that page) out of the SQL and store it in a report table in the admin database. (We kept them separate for security reasons)
Our comments were normalized pretty well, so even for massive threads the queries were extremely fast and the php code didn't impact the site. I don't know if FA's comment system is still... like it was a long time ago, but I'm sure that's one of the things they'll fix.
1) making it difficult to see what it's all about and
2) using unnecessary much Storage Space [yes, that sums up].
Also, Freezing it and effectively disabling Edits is another Thing that might be too much, People might just freeze Submissions for Fun.
And, it's not about you being able to edit the Page before reporting.
You can't change the Page on the Server either Way, you can change what your Browser is displaying, and only yours.
For example, I could modify your Comment on this Page so you seem to start a Fight with me, and make a Screenshot of that as 'Proof'. But I'm not able to change the Page up on FA's Server, just in my Browser - as soon as I hit refresh, the Page is back to normal. It's like editing Text without being able so save.
Long Story short:
There's no Issue with sending it right away or later, since you can't edit the real Page on the Servers either Way.
But there's an Issue with the Screenshots probably being faked [in whatever Manner, you could even use Photoshop].
Important is just the Snapshot at that Time, so the Harasser can't just delete his Comments after being reported.
Well, he can still delete them, but a Copy has been sent already [FA-Internally], and that's what the Snapshot Part is about:
The Report Button has to trigger a Function to create a Server-Side Snapshot of the selected Conversation/Submission, and send that to the Admins via PN and/or the Ticket System.
^..^
It's not that one sided.
Give us another option.
I've sent him another note about the 2 (new) admins not doing their jobs right, and the screenshots BS. We'll see what happens I guess :/
I had an incident a couple years back where a former college roomie was trying their best to ruin my reputation due to our personal fallout.
Every time I went to report their actions, they would delete offensive comments and journals.
In the end, I took it upon myself, made a well-written note asking them to leave me alone, and I banned them from my account.
They made another account, I blocked that one too after reminding them FA can track IP addresses.
My best tips are:
1. Don't give the haters what they want - a reaction
2. The block feature is a good friend - use it
3. When it comes down to personal issues, sometimes a simple "please stop" can help steer things in the right direction
Hope you both have a better time here on FA in the near future, and sorry again to hear you've been having it rough.
With the new admins, it should no longer take months to get responses to trouble tickets. Once we exhaust the current queue of tickets, admins will basically be waiting to answer tickets, resulting in response times dropping from a few months to a few minutes or hours.
Do the mods have no way of checking someones comment/upload history to verify whether or not a screenshot is valid? That's a serious issue, if not.
Do the mods have no way of checking someones comment/upload history to verify whether or not a screenshot is valid? That's a serious issue, if not.
Give the Submission Uploader the Option to read the Comments and approve them before they display publicly.
On the other Hand, look at - for Example - Narse's Submission Comments.
Congratulations, you got 538 new Comments on your Submissions to approve =D
Each and every Reply to those Comments, as well.
Also, the Uploader can hide Comments on the Page yet.
So, I really don't think that will work out for anything other than the Shoutbox.
Instead of Message Center's "New Shout by NAME" there should be the Shout itself, with ✓ and ✗.
this is one reason why i'm not incorporating a chatting/voip system in my game... too many diplomatic issues to take into consider (that and it's a bi#ch to get done right) that it'd be a lot easier for people to just use ventrillo or other systems to chat on teams... why reinvent the wheel?
I totally missed the call for admins, where do you usually post that stuff? augh!
GOOD LUCK~
i've been putting a ton of thought into applying later down the line but i live up in seattle.
Is that still okay?
but, i'm going to guess that proficiency in multiple languages would probably help one's case for being a mod. So, if you are muti-lingual and can show you've got the chops for being a moderator, why not apply? you've nothing to lose by trying. :)
Why is FA so far behind the times where other sites are not? Hell, The Verge's default site is shit on a lot of devices (iOS devices included), but even they have a mobile site AND an app that both run pretty smoothly.
We are working on a mobile interface for FA, but it is a ways off. I would not expect to see it until later this year once we finish some revisions to the main site.
Why not work with developers to make an app that meets guidelines and won't screw the site over if you're not going to make one yourselves?
With the help of the mods on FA, the app wouldn't hurt the site either.
Of course, it wouldn't work with every phone, but that's just how it goes. You could still have a mobile site too but the app looks like it'd probably be more popular and less work for the coders of the site as you'd just have someone else do it while you all worried about the site.
this seems desperately necessary if the site needs to reduce the load on the site
this punishment > solving problems thing is absolutely crazy
Thank you.
P.S. Still suggest you message dragoneer before using it.
Sexually Explicit Material: We don't allow content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.
Very first rule on the Developer Program Policies page.
Ah well, mobile site it is then. However, we still need it sooner rather than later. Banning people because your site isn't optimized for mobile and not actually doing anything to make it more optimized until LATE in the year is just ridiculous.
Multiple app stores for Android
Loading any .apk file
Sure, having it on an app store would be awesome, but giving a QR code/DL link on the site for download is also useful for distributing an app
Thinking about it, making a decent lil' mobile app/mobile assistant (if only for uploading/quick replies to your notifications and stuff) for like... .99 would be a good lil' way to get some more income to support the site.
It can rack up quite a bit of mobile data if you load it enough. I'm not joking. I can rack up quite a bit of data just by loading an artist's gallery or streaming a song. The site's code is written for a desktop, it's filled with images, it can stream music, and a lot of the avatars (mine included) are animated.
Not only does all of that chew away at data, it chews at battery too as web browsing can be pretty intense on the processor and RAM of a phone.
About the only two things on FA that wouldn't hurt data plans or battery is Flash and stories. Stories are pretty much all text and Flash is dead on mobile.
The webpages themselves are relatively lean, what eats data are the thumbnails and the submissions themselves. Flash applets & video players is something FA cannot do much about, as these cannot be compressed further on the server side.
However, you as a user can reduce the load:
1.: Reduce the thumbnail size in the 'Site Settings'. One example:
The thumbnail file size of Cureboltiums latest work went from 34KB down to 4.7KB by going from 200 down to 100 pixels.
2.: Switch down the 'Perpage'-setting.
3.: Disable Avatars.
Fender: How about adding a '6' & a '12' option to the 'Perpage'-Setting? Seems to be right for small mobile screens.
Sorry, not going to cut it with me and to be honest, it shouldn't be okay to you either.
and you can trust me on that one, it is the graphics, that eat into your mobile budget. HTML isn't a big problem, it is text, which can be compressed
very easily, Graphics is a different game, especially, if there is a minimum quality to keep. The only way to further reduce the transmitted amount
would be employing the system Twitter uses. It only loads the top part of the page and more is loaded screenpagewise when you scroll down,
but that means, that you have to wait every time you scroll down for the next bit to load.
A few numbers:
This whole page (including all comments) without graphics is 72KB,
your icon is 8.5KB, the average size for the icons is about 8KB, multiframe animated icons usually come around 44KB.
the four Ad-banners, that were loaded, when I wrote this reply, were about 580KB.
Oh, and the FA-Banner is another 91KB.
Now do the math.
And an API doesn't make a big difference in that department. It will cut down on the text, but that is the smallest part of the page weight.
However, an API allows for additional option on the client's side. But if you want the full monty, you still have to bear the weight.
Basically, the real problem isn't FA, it is the mobile contracts with their sometimes ridiculous low data budgets. Mobile phone companies
try to sell a 50MB-contract as the latest and best you can get. Or you get 5GB for 15 Euros, which is a good offer here in Germany,
but then you have to put up with a network, that simply can't handle the load, giving you loading times in the minute range, if the page loads at all.
Despite every single thing you said, people prefer the app and thus have been using it. FurAffinity is simply a poorly coded website, you can throw numbers around all you like and you will still reach that conclusion (that is, if you know how to code HTML correctly).
Sure, the banners and ads and thumbnails MAY be small, but you are not taking into account users who have pages upon pages of artwork or do nothing but post music to stream. That all tends to add up very quickly. Considering that most people who go online now are on a tablet or phone of some kind, it makes a difference moreso than it would on a full laptop or desktop.
An API would still help mounds better than "Durrr, let's ban everyone who uses the app because we're too lazy to get a mobile version out!" Don't you think?
Of course the real problem are the carriers (I specifically speak of the US carriers) but since they will never bend or break, it's up to websites to help the consumers out a little bit. Since none of us here can make Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, Cricket, etc. change their minds, it's up to us to get the mods to change theirs.
In Germany, you get MUCH better plans than we do. All of those KBs and MBs don't mean much there while they mean a LOT here in the US where people are throttled or billed for outrages fees at any chance the carriers get.
Still, even if it IS the fault of the carriers, this isn't an excuse for the mods or admins to just ban people instead of seeking an appropriate and professional solution.
I'd say, instead of adding all these moderators, why not work on the mobile site now? Why wait until months down the road?
I can tell you one thing, if any other site did this, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have as much traffic anymore. Last I checked, the developer of one of the FA Chrome extensions has been telling people to just go to Weasyl.
It may not be the end of the universe, but it's extremely unprofessional.
I'm assuming there will be other methods of contact made. Also assuming that these suspensions are going to be automatic in nature, just set in place and clean up after.
But again I have no real idea. Just imagining how I'd implement it if this was what I'd set my mind on.
Because there are more pressing needs to be addressed. Tickets should be dealt with in a matter of hours, not months. That's why a decent sized team of mods is essential for running this site.
Oh, and there had been promises made about additional functionality, e.g. Folders - for late 2010, if I remember correctly. That should be finished first before anything new is promised.
And about the bans for using the app and the extension: If a programmer is too dumb to correctly program a web request, that doesn't hammer the server into oblivion, then access with these apps needs be blocked. If someone attacks your server with a virtual mallet, then you have the right to hit back with the banhammer.
Plus, I do expect, that those using these apps are warned before the banhammer comes down.
If the mods were less inclined to ban people and more inclined to work with the developer, we wouldn't have this problem. However, they'd rather be childish and ban people instead.
People aren't doing this on purpose, they're doing it because the desktop site simply SUCKS to use on a phone or tablet. There's no question about that.
I love how they have been banning people BEFORE posting this journal though. That's p.classy, guys.
Warning people before banning them? Really? These moderators can't even answer a trouble ticket in time, what makes you think they can warn someone before banning them? That's simply an unheard of concept on FA.
Seriously though, sarcasm and snark aside, FA needs to work on mobile now, not folders. From the looks of the comments, there's tons of other more pressing matters then folders they need to work on. Mobile should definitely be #1 if they're going to start banning people over it, however.
Again, if any of this shit went down with a true professional website, we wouldn't be having this conversation and we'd all be going against them with no one to defend them. However, since this is seen as the "ONLY" furry site for art/stories, well..yeah. :v
That is, until Weasyl opens to the public.
And if you are browsing FA in a normal web browser, using the site normally, there are no issues. No amount of normal use would cause an issue. Even five normal users on the same IP would not cause a problem. So unless you're a cybernetic organism made of living tissue over a metal endoskeleton there would be no issues.
CURSES, FOILED AGAIN!
Well, I did make an Firefox/Chrome extension (posted here: http://forums.furaffinity.net/threa.....e-and-Firefox!) for the site, and that was actually my first concern: not causing extra load on the site.
The extension doesn't do any calls at all to the server, all of it is done client-side via Javascript. If any admins wanted to look at it, or ask questions I could easily show them the code and/or walk them through it if need be. :)
Now, if i used the 3DS or DSi explorer i may be Banned? because aren´t Pc platform.
And no, no normal web client will get action taken against you. Only those two apps mentioned. Everything else is fine.
Is it safe to use? And to prevent an adult content app from. Being removed you do what so furry did. They have a filter within the app.. and clearly state that the user must be logged in and over 18 to view this content. And even after that once your logged in you would have to enable the adult content within the app.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G On Metro PCS/ Sprint PCS.
I really do not tend to have any issues with the admins of this site. I try to work with them where i can to improve the site through proper reporting and helpful comments to users reminding them of the things that they really need to be doing to make their submissions follow the rules.
However, your comment here just generally bothers me. Partly because I feel that it hurts your defense of why the new mods were chosen. I think they all need a fair chance to prove their worth.
Please just clarify if you would.
Experienced admins staked their credibility on vouching for a few applicants, we verified they fit the minimum criteria for all applicants, and then we took their word on it. If the applicant ended up being a bad fit in practice, then the applicant would have been removed and the admin vouching for them would lose, at the very least, credibility. Thus, it also means that, with the vouching system, there's at least one person with personal motivation to keep an eye on the new recruit and to keep them up to par. So trust me, it's not just "giving high positions to friends;" it's staking your position on improving the team. Also, I'm pretty sure everyone on the site knows by now that an admin is one of the last things you want to be; it's a very thankless job :P
Many good points have been made in these comments, both in defense and against the policies of the site and of the admins. We have had some truly terrible things happen. Bad admins being bad, bad users being bad, bad code being bad, and rules that just do not work. However, by bringing in new admins who have been here a while, and who know what has happened in the past, I really hope that the site can and will move forward. I think it will once things have calmed down, and when the new moderators and admins begin proving their worth not only to you higher up guys, but to us as users as well.
A good site compromises with its users, and I see that beginning to happen more clearly here. A lot of people are mad about the past and some about the current situation. They just have to sit back and let things have a chance to change instead of putting you guys on the defensive trying to protect your every choice.
You guys do what you can with what you have. That is all you can do. To put it simply, I cannot expect a can of Chicken Soup to fix a flu. It can only make the fever subside for a while. What you guys are doing is adding the medicine to help the Chicken soup make things really better.
Anyhow. I hope these new guys can help out. This site needs good, fair, level headed people to make up for the bad things that drug your team into the dirt.
You just keep going Kitashi. It may not get better for a while, but you can get wiser for it. Don't be afraid to ask others for advice either, you are only one person after all.
(Also might be replying in notes if we keep the conversation going, there are so many comments on this page now it is freezing my browser up hahaha)
Almost left based on what I'd seen of Admin's abusing their power.
AUP open to interpretation of whoever Admin sees fit at the time.
I've seen many a site/forum whose Admins are too buddy buddy with the owner.
Nice to see thought/screening put into Admin selection.
I know it can be a thankless job at times.
I'm just saying that some jump the gun and need to take a look at what they're doing.
Problem is, apart from this and other tweaks, I do like FA but at times I really hate it.
By the way I'm 18 as well.
I know IB has one.
*waves and welcomes the new admins, sayimg "Hi" to Fender and the current admins as well.* :)
better service as in better rules, better rules like rules that don't hurt or alienate the user base?
BTW I've never had a ticket answered in a timely manner.
As such, FA used to have a commission page circa 2007, but it was removed. It was a feature that came and went, but has since been rewritten and is undergoing testing.
Since it doesn't really seem like price guide submissions are a problem to the website, I don't see why both options couldn't be available for everyone to choose which they'd rather have. And instead of being 'scraps only' just allow it to continue as it is. I don't really see/understand the reasoning behind making them a scraps only thing, even with the promise of a price guide being implemented to users' pages.
And since I've seen it mentioned several times about buying 'ad space'. I know that I'm not the only one who uses adblocker, which means I never see the ads here on FA and I'm sure this is true for many. So I don't think that'll be as enticing of a feature for most artists as one might hope.
As for ad space, I've actually seen many people say they turn off ad blocking on FA because our ads actually pertain to their interests. Our goal is to make ads that users actually want to see so they don't try to hide them, unlike pretty much every other website out there. Beyond that, we do have ideas we'd like to implement to promote all users who take commissions on FA. As mentioned before, though, there are internal road blocks we need to remove first.
Well I mean, that's good. Maybe there should be a poll someday to see how many people actually view the ads, might convince some of the users to pay up for the space. Anyway, thanks for the responses o u o
X page, visit it, and see all current banners. Could divide it to 4-6 a page if needed. Then some people could have adblock on and just visit that to see what's new. I will admit FA is the only site I turn off adblock on (lol) due to the relevance.
I have discovered many artists that I follow this way because from a single picture I can see multiple pieces of artwork, characters, species etc and their prices.
I dont want to miss a good artist just because I'm not into a specific picture they did. I like finding price lists while browsing.
Over on SF we put our info about doing commissions in a journal entry (type of stuff we'll do, and how much we charge) with a title that says (basically) "Commission Info" (or similar words to that effect). We can put a "shout" on our main page about doing commissions, and give the link to the journal entry, just so long as no prices are shown in the "shout" or on any artwork. Is something like that allowable on here?
whenever I would click on it it said something about "in the process of being rewritten"
That was over two years ago... Yeah :v
So is it wrong to have that done? Are we allowed to keep YCH auctions and adoptables in our main gallery? I draw images and post that image and run the auction in the same submission. :/
hell I honestly just nuke my journals whenever it gets overbearing. that's just how it is. a good majority of people are going to look over it and dismiss it. Suppose all caps and huge blocky letters would work out eh?
In the meantime, I'd suggest putting a link to your commission information in all of your submissions; if someone's interested in your art, they should stumble upon something you do, and if they're interested in commissioning you, they should read the submission description. I'd argue that if someone doesn't read your submission descriptions or look in your journals, they're probably not interested in asking for commissions and instead just want the free stuff.
(An entire gallery of images)
I believe that would spam requests...
Should I keep using it or stop ?
Thank you :)
Hope a mobile app comes from the site someday. For now, I have removed the FA Mobile app I was using.
As has been stated, our goal is to make a mobile-friendly version of the site. However, it takes time to do these things, and right now we've got some road blocks that are preventing us from making any significant progress coding-wise. I'm personally working to remove those road blocks.
Still a great admirer of the site and only look forward to more and more advances and expansions in its progression :3 Good luck!
http://www.pandawarez.net/scripts/faec_readme.htm
- It doesn't try to reload things on its own.
- The images for the extra code/tag buttons it adds are stored in the script itself (and the buttons should cut down on people needing to open the tags help page)
- It may also reduce page loads by setting search to "date" by default, and by allowing users to go to the specific Notes section they want directly rather than first having to go to whatever the most recent Notes section they'd visted was.
- Admittedly, it will load the images for the emotes buttons on the New Journal page, but everything from user pages, submission pages, and I think notes pages already load these anyways. (Perhaps I should add an option to load the emotes images on all pages from copies I could store in the script, to save bandwidth for both FA and for the user?)
- All changes are done by it patching into the page HTML after the page loads.
If it's bad I can modify it if necessary...
I'd rather visit a functioning site and staff than an app/extension that could cause conflict to the site, staff, users, and/or software/devices.
People like to ask redundant questions that have been answered 50000 times in previous comments :P
And what is this extension that is causing FA problems? I know you named it above. But I am confused on it. And Idk what it does. ^^; But just want to know so I can avoid it. lol
comment via fender ;
"In all instances where we have taken action against an extension, the extension has sent hundreds of requests to resources (the control panel, login page) that haven't made sense. Apps that mass download or pull a lot of resources are generally frowned upon."
I'm surprised theres already admins recruited and i've still never been contacted via email or anything.
A mobile app is quite useful for alot of people, so they do not have to load the full site but just the most neded content and with this, reduce the general loading time - inf act, the app will have to be coded that way.
Also, where is that ticketing system? o.O I have been looking for some sort of API, but didnt find any o-o
But again, consider supporting mobile applications... o.o
My FA > Report a Problem
http://www.furaffinity.net/controls.....roubletickets/
People always told me it was under the support tab (which is obviously isn't) so I'd have to Google it every time I wanted to report and that was very annoying..
Commented above by fender;
"We are working on a mobile interface for FA, but it is a ways off. I would not expect to see it until later this year once we finish some revisions to the main site."
(Figured i'd reply since I saw the comment up there!)
no one reply to this unless they have the info I'm looking for. no replies is better than rehashing
If he says they don't have a date, then they don't have a date, dude.
They can't give you the proper estimate you're looking for when they don't even know their next move on the mobile browser.. :s
that means there is no answer
that is ok.
It doesn't mass upload (per site), only uploads one submission to each site you tick on a list.
from a non-programmer perspective i don't see there being any issues with things such as stating the criteria that an extension should be held to for it to not cause issues (and in a sense they have stated it in a way by outlining why the ones that were black-listed for sending too many calls.) but i'm sure there are more things other than that that i think would help any potential developers out there build something that can be approved.
but, again, i'm not a programmer... i can barely code my way out of a wet paper bag so take my views with a shaker of salt.
APIs also make it easier on programmers, because instead of having to filter out the garbage data we don't need, we just request exactly what we do need.
I can totally see the benefit of it as well. i mean, even though i'm not a programmer i do understand the concepts of trying to be as efficient as possible so in that respect i see why an API would help things.
though, a suggestion... if you're decent at this kinda thing, maybe talk to the coding team directly? if they're decent i can't see them wanting to refuse some additional help if it's for the benefit of the site overall.
However, it's broken on pretty much every other browser.
Talk about professional failure.
There was nothing professional about the way he handled my problem.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3988999/
I've heard it sooo many timmmesss. It doesn't mean anything at all anymore >.>
Doesn't matter anyway.
The code needs more than a fix. We need an entire audit.
Except that XSS thing.
https://forums.vivisector.org/index.....hp?topic=599.0
That was less than a year ago.
It's always the fact that some sort of admin knows about it, but nothing is ever done.
XSS was another good example.
https://forums.vivisector.org/index.....hp?topic=400.0 is another good example.
I could keep going, but there are so many examples, it would take way to long.
Also, just because an exploit hasn't been found for a site in a while, doesn't mean they don't exist.
As for the extensions, a download extension I've been using for over an year stopped working for me, and I was pretty confused and worried till I found a new one (which no longer spams the site so it's within the rules now). No harm was meant though... I never realized it could be slowing down FA or there was anything wrong about it till one of the mods told me on IRC. I guess it's better that those extensions are prevented to avoid heavy bandwidth usage.
If someone wishes to use an automatic download extension on FA which does NOT increase bandwidth usage, get one for FireFox called Save Images ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fi.....mages/?src=api ). Configure it with the filter http://d.facdn.net/art/* and when you use "All Tabs" it will save the art you have opened WITHOUT requesting the site to fetch it again (it takes them from the local FireFox cache after you just opened the tab). That should make everyone happy... both the server and those who have too many new submissions to download each manually :P
Therefore, when there is a problem with the T&C, it needs to be adressed thoroughly, as well as pointed out whereabouts it specifically says that certain things are not allowed, to back up their case, so that it is more clear.
Let me put it this way: We don't look at how you access FA, but rather how often.
(This doesn't mean that you can be banned for clicking every link you see, though)
No promises, though, as I don't know the exact numbers for the app.
I'm still waiting on a response for submissions made about 5 years ago.
Will that response change? Nope.
Also a lot of rants about an app. Why not just use a laptop? You got that android device. Tether it to your laptop and get all the FA you want minus that headache. I do this at work frequently just so i can look at what i want without all the -work network- hassle.
To those with them long waits cause of art theft. --4chan-- Just drop the offenders there and see where it goes. It's (generally) super effective.
Also -correct me if im wrong- All android devices have the tethering option built in under [wireless options]-->[tethering and mobile hotspots] or you can use PDA net (an app). I don't use the hotspot option as that is an extra charge.
I have no idea about apple products as i dislike that brand.
Heck, some people don't even own a computer.. *shrug*
I wasn't saying anyone was going to DIE by not being able to access FA. And that's very hypocritical coming from someone with a smartphone AND a laptop....
Whoops!
As legit as some Comments regarding FA's Admins may be...
If you can't make 'Apps' work properly / don't have any Idea of Networking, then just don't.
That's what I didn't read anywhere yet - whoever the Developer of said 'App' was didn't do it right, either.
Actually made FA worse by forcing a high Workload on the Servers.
Now, i understand that it isn't any of my business but i would like to see what's going on with regards to preventing the issues which gave FA such a black eye those years past (such as power-mongering mods abusing their position... that i think is one of the most troubling as it basically says that the mods are held to a different standard which should not be the case... a certain "phallic sculpture" outburst involving a prominent admin at the time comes to mind.)
Consider it deleted.
I written parser programs, but most of mine are design to scavance caching.
FYI ADMINS: PLEASE FIX THE PAGE SO IT WORKS IN ALL BROWSERS!
If a app's built properly, we have no problem if people want to use it. (the FA extender plugin for FireFox is a example)
>Logic
We have absolutely no problem with 3rd party applications, as long as they make a effort to be efficient in their server calls.
I doubt a collegue said that, since FA Extender is one of the few apps we use as a example of what you can use.
after 6 months of waiting those who attacked me easily removed all the evidence I had against them and so now that the admins 'FINALLY' come to speak of these things I now have no evidence at all and instead get brushed aside.
So now the people who attacked and harshly threatened and harassed me got off scott free and you guys seem to think that there is no problem with this???
And if so, I'll gladly stop using it, but you guys NEED to implement a rule against the consistent spam of "YCH HERE" auction pimping spam or the FREE ART, BUT U MUST POST A JOURNAL nonsense too. Because I'm sick of that shit. And I'm sure people are sick of the streaming notices as well.
If you want to really keep the excessive server request down, you should look at the reasons WHY people are using these extensions
I've seen minor things, but I'll believe it when I see it (in reference to this 'UI overhaul' but not doing enough to the underlying decrepit code)
I do request streams where I need an easy and handsfree way to check and see if I have any more requests to do (via comments) and if at all possible I want to avoid giving this extension up.
yeah sometimes its slow. but.. most people seem to hate on it when i use this site constantly and never run in to any problems.
Maybe it's a deep seeded problem most people have. Human nature to always be complaining about something, and all that jazz. Plus! Furries! Try explaining that one X3
i forgot though, im supposed to HATE THIS WEBSITE so evul
If they are like, 'oh look what i just bought. winketey wink' then it is a bit TMI.
*shruggggg*
Good to know i should never make an app to check the site
Basically, common sense.
If your app submits roughly the same amount of requests as a relatively heavy user, you're probably still way in the green zone.
Sorry for being so vague, but that's as close as I can really get.
because I use it a lot
that add-on gives FA a major advantage over other art sites
it was resolved the next day and i sent the creator of FA status a message!
Seems legit.
Maybe a warning would be less harsh and actually allow the user to untinstall the app/extension before having the rude awakening of being banned for a reason you didnt even know you had part in?
Umm I have a question though, can we please get a feature to CUSTOMIZE how we block people? I mean the only thing a block does is stop them from commenting. I would love to NOT LET them even SEE my page =/
So, without naming smartphones, tablets, laptops, netbooks, or ultrabooks, name other mobile pieces of hardware that are made to specifically goto websites. Handheld gaming devices such as PSP, PS Vita, and the Nintendo DS line are out as they're primarily for gaming. iPod touches are also out as they are more "smartphone" than "mp3 player".
These devices must be easy to travel with and carry around (preferably in one's pocket or purse) and must not be a big hassle to use in a quick pinch like laptops, netbooks, and ultrabooks can sometimes be.
Especially now since you can get Internet through the cell phone providers for your home computer, what then? Never go on FA?
I don't have internet, so without FA on my phone, i'd have no way to access it for business purposes. :)
Just wanted to check whether it causes problems at your end. I've found it useful for me as an end user but want to make sure I'm not causing the serverside undue stress when I use it.
You guys should make a toolbar or app, cause it'd be super useful.
I'd love to have a toolbar that tells me how many messages i have, so i don't have to refresh the site to check it.
Is there anyway to report admin abuse? In a sense, I had an issue with an admin attending to a situation in which he/she's mate was reporting me for and I sent in a report that wasn't answered until 4 hours after and until I spoke to a different admin saying this admin was ignoring and attending to he/she's mates problems.
It was rather shady and annoying. Almost like LOL, their mate and therefore attend to me concerns first and foremost!
Doesn't mean it's excusable however - what has really changed on this site for the last years, apart from thumbnails and some HTML/CSS?
Surely there's room for improvement here http://i.minus.com/iPx79HxWci8qU.JPG
Nice.
the size of it is not from how much code, but instead from the HTML elements and how they sit in relation to each other.
eg. if you had this in a standard HTML document:
<div id="wrapper">
<div id="header">
</div>
</div>
you would have 4 layers... the first being the <html></html>, the second being the <body></body>, the third being the wrapper <div>, and the fourth being the header <div>, all sitting on-top of each other as they are all parented to each other.
Its a way to show the layout of the page and how the HTML elements relate to each other - as such you can have a lot of layers with minimal code.
And if your wondering how to do it...
In firefox, right click on a page and press "Inspect Element (Q)", then press the "3D View" button on the bottom right. =3
Maybe yours runs better because it has ram AND rom??? All I know is sometimes my phone runs out of memory just running a messaging app only...
G'luck man!
HEH
Changing a username on FA isn't as simple as changing a `name` field from "John" to "Jane".
A mobile version of the site is on our "wish list", though.
FTP really isn't made to surf sites with.
I'm a full time college student and when classes start I have to find a way to balance work with friends, art and being online and that doesn't count commission I may take.
I may think about it more down the line. Only thing I can do is look at TT and be sure people follow the rules and handle it in a calm manor.
Good to know you guys took measure to avoid this kind of things in the future!
And a warm welcome to our new admins.
First, FA was launched 8 years ago (as of tomorrow!), and many of the features that "should have been included at launch" were honestly not that common 8 years ago, or at the very least, it was not uncommon to find sites that didn't have them.
Second, at various times, the site has alternately had periods of sudden, unexpected increase in userbase, and at other times has suffered various hardware failures and hacker attacks. With the number of times the site has had one or more of these issues, it wouldn't surprise me if at least once or twice, said issues actually cased dramatic setbacks with any site improvements whatsoever.
Third, this is still a site that operates on a VERY tight budget, its only (or at least primary) source of revenues being advertising, a large portion of which seems to come from (and link to) various FA users. This being the case, in some sense, FA could ALMOST be said to be a user-supported site.
And finally, due to the limited revenue, Dragoneer seems to wind up having to put up with some degree of unprofessional behavior (aka DRAMA) from his various staff since, if anyone actually gets paid for working on the site, it can't be much. Thus, it would be almost impossible to replace almost any of the staff, without having to pay significantly more, or if current staff are mostly volunteers, having to turn those jobs into paid positions.
Now, don't get me wrong. Yes, other sites have managed to overcome these issues and more, while creating more modern-looking sites, with more of those tiny features many sites take for granted, and some of those that would REALLY be nice, and at the same time having less visible staff-created drama. I what I'm trying to say is just this: if you think you can do better, AND attract a user base that makes a site the virtual hub of "all things furry", I'd like to see you try.
Guess who's paying the rest...
I would happily pay $1 a month / $12 a year to get a little shiny badge on my userpage that says im a supporter. And I highly doupt I'm the only one.
If somthing like that was implemented then many would donate a simple $1 a month or $12 a year.
Think if even just 1000 donate to get the little supporter badge that would bring in over $1000 a month
Large donatons are harder for people to do, telling users $1 a month makes it seem like such a minute ammount that could make a huge difference. And yeah a little badge so people can show off that they support. (NOT IMPLEMENT ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT OR DIFFERENT TIERS, just a single badge)
I think many would pay that if it would see things improve.
PAYPAL
https://www.paypalobjects.com/Integ.....opayments.html
Even if they take a cut from that, they would still get a lot more than having people send them envelopes in the mail (the fee for micropayments is less than it would cost for people for envelopes + stamps)
If that is the case then fA needs to find some simple, straight forward alternative way for members to donate rather than snail mailing money to an address... that sorta only works for 1 country...
Donations are just money where the giver can give freely, without FA having to generate an economy to validate it so can it can just get round to putting it to good use.
Also, i really hope you guys consider my application, i have A LOT of free time on my hands outside of work, it would be great to be able to assist the site plus it would give me something to do XD.
-TheModergator
Hmmmm...I don't understand What happened ?
When I sumbit and Select the file Art and Click the Next button
The Uploading will stop and Error 101
Why I can't submit
Will there ever possibly be a supported app? Mobile site maybe?
TwT
Welcome to FA.
Now, we had over 750 applications. This means we really can't accept every applicant that suits our criteria, there's just too many.
I had a very large issue occur with one of your administrators removing a completely-okay submission of mine thanks to a completely-unsubstantiated and completely-false 'reason' they pulled from nothing. I'm very upset and I do hope my ticket can be responded to at some point.
I also made a journal detailing the whole situation here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4238702/ It is a bit rantish, but I don't think anyone can blame me.
But thank god it's not! :P
I'm not asking cause i want to be one, yes it would be cool i must admit, but just how? why? Who decides?:O
answer me these questions three!
* Open call for applications
* Existing administrators review applications and come up with a shortlist. Things like previous administrative experience and lack of user history on the site are highly important. Other useful things may include ability to speak other languages, location, being very experienced with certain subject matter, how the user conducts themselves, etc.
* After the shortlist was settled, interview the folks who are on it in order of rank, until such time as we have the required number.
* Train.
Having gone though the applications myself, the main problem wasn't so much a lot of bad applications as not all that many standout ones. It doesn't help that if you come here without previous experience you'll probably get eaten alive...
Follow the instructions provided therein, and wait and hope xD
Beyond all that, I would like to congratulation the new staff (Admin) And wish them all the best, in there new order and improvement upon the status of Furaffinity.
~ Darius Bluetail ~
So I'd guess no.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4242458/
I'd repost but it's quite a read. If you can take some time to read and reply, it'd be awesome.
Referring to these new staff additions as "Administrators" only serves to create false hope in regards to their ability to affect the terrible state the site is currently in.
"Administrators" are people who administrate, people who have the power to actually change things. People who spend all day closing trouble tickets and banning people for saying the word "fartbucket" too many times are not "Administrators".
Step #2: Delete all current trouble tickets in the system.
There's no point in retaining over a thousand trouble tickets in the system, most of which are months old and covering issues which has since long been solved without your intervention. Not to mention the issues with morality when you drop a group of people into a jungle and tell them to trim it with a pair of hand-scissors.
No, flush all that old shit out and tell them to keep the lawn nice and trimmed. It will boost morality, and ensure that while people may have to create another trouble ticket, they'll have it answered in 1 - 2 days, not 2 - 3 months.
Step #3: Make a rule not to brag about how many trouble tickets you have solved.
It looks SEVERELY unprofessional (I'm talking S.E.V.E.R.E.L.Y in big blinking red neon lights here), and makes it seem like your site/community is plagued with so many issues it's clogging the trouble ticket system. No one wants to join a community like that.
Step #4: Get rid of the "Fender" account.
It feels horribly impersonal to be addressed by a sockpuppet account, rather than an actual person whom you know and can relate to.
I realize you guys are trying to dodge the drama, but seriously, it makes more harm than good, and makes you look like a pair of scared children afraid of being called a "poopie head". No one wants a bunch of children to run their favorite site.
Step #5: Set up a SVN/GIT repository with the site code in a safe environment, applying appropriate restrictions, and hire new coders. And set up a bugtracker while you're at it.
Do I even need to mention why new coders are required? The site runs terribly, it has terrible features, and pretty much every single art site on the entire internet has you beat in all areas except for number of trouble tickets. This is NOT acceptable unless you're a bunch of 13 year old kids hosting a private server.
I realize you guys are afraid of having an admin abuse a weakness in the site code again, but keep in mind that the reason this happened in the first place was because you blatantly ignored this admins plea for bugfixing, and the only way they could make you fix it was to exploit it. This is unacceptable. You need to reform and streamline the site development or the site will DIE, and will be known as "That one site which died because the admins were too lazy".
And if your current developer (I would say developerS, but yeah...) decides that he doesn't want this, boot him. Having no site dev and the ability to hire more competent ones is better than having one that is willing to sit on his ass, alone, and do nothing while the site collapses in on itself.
Five easy steps towards a better Furaffinity. You're welcome.
This is a simple site and easily cache-able sections to get most pages turned around in under 10ms.
Step #7: Party with all the extra processor now freed up =:3
And also remove that "Page generated in ... with ... PHP/SQL" thing at the bottom. Pointless waste of cpu cycles really.
You just got to do the right bits were you can like.
using EXPLAIN on all your queries for a start
profiling your queries
never do dependent sub queries
leave on MySql slow log
and for PHP
profile requests and dig down trough it with cachegrind,
write simple cacheable blocks
config it right these as a very min since your using 5.4 and i hope apc(apc.stat=Off, apc.lazy_functions=On, apc.lazy_classes=On(needed if your writing bad code))
for the site overall
don't have all the comments loaded, since that looks like the biggest fail when loading to the user and the server processor, just look at the bottom of this page 0.5s-1s, this could easily load the last 20 comments, and AJAX in the next 20 above it when the user clicks show more, which will hardly happen.
find a few devs to work on the site and actually get stuff done
I've been treat like absolute crap. and guess how old I actually am?
I will but they can go and suck a fat one and choke on it.
It's all bullshit
As site, we responsible for who we serve porn to.
If a minor is viewing porn, we could be in legal trouble, so we age-lock the account. All fair, yes?
Now what if the minor is lying about his age? In that case, the user is basically committing fraud, and the legal responsibility lies with the user.
BUT
If we can for any reason suspect the user to be lying about his age, and we don't do anything about it, it's our legal responsibility. So we have to act.
Now, from what I can see in the log files, the admin had enough reason to suspect you might be under-age, so to age-lock you. If you are of age, however, just send in the data like requested, and the lock will be lifted.
I understand it can be annoying to be age-locked, but I'm afraid it's sometimes a necessary evil, to keep this site running.
Some taxidermists like to preserve a still born fetus of an animal this shows others how the animal looks in development inside of the womb. The animal was not killed by our hands and if it was we treat them with a lot of respect as if they were alive. I would like to have my question answered instead of being asked with a question.
Since I don't know the guy's username, or the removed picture, I'm going to to guess it was removed because of the "containing real gore or death" category.
The reason this "suddenly" became a issue might be that we haven't noticed the submissions on FA, before. We can't remove submissions we don't either happen to see by browsing the site, or are reported, for the simple reason that we don't see everything uploaded to FA.
No blood, no gore. It was an animal my cat had brought in, and there was not even any damage to it externally. I had just placed him in the bottle after prepping and he was in a sitting position.
To be frank, I was waiting for explanation why it disappeared before I reuploaded it or not, but because this is such a circlejerk and these seems to be happening to a number of people, I'm getting to the point where I'm just going to keep reuploading it until someone tells me /why/ it's removed, because I'm down to "it was a fluke in the coding/FA ate it accidentally" because HOW DO I KNOW ANY BETTER?
Fur Affinity's rules do not permit submissions of this nature, and we are removing the submission under the "no gore/death" policy of the site.
I really suggest you don't re-upload the submission(s) involved without discussing it with the admin that removed them, since that'd be a direct violation of our rules.
That notice isn't clear at all. "Submissions of this nature" is extremely subjective and it doesn't actually say how it falls under that category, which it doesn't.
I personally think they just like to take down things they don't want to see, because they can, even if they break no rules. Just like they don't like to ban harassers, scold the people being harassed and not take down submissions that actually break the rules.
That's wrong.
I've spoken personally to Dragoneer about the matter, and even made suggestions when the new AUP came into play that he listened to and took to heart.
I WILL reupload it, because it's just like ALL my other submissions that ARE approved.
Taxidermy IS allowed, and I WOULD appreciate some notice next time.
Proper taxidermy is allowed.
Animals in jars are not allowed.
Animals in the process of dying are not allowed.
Your reply sounds very extremely biased right now.
Wet preserves ARE proper taxidermy otherwise it wouldn't even be in category of taxidermy in general.
"Animals in jars" ARE "proper" taxidermy.
You don't just take an animal and cram it into a jar, as I'm sure you're assuming.
There's a blend of chemicals and a science and process behind it that has to be learned.
Wet Specimens have been around since the early days of exploratory science, and quite frankly your reply to me shows just how little you know.
What are you going to do? Punish the massive amount of people who also do wet specimens on this site?
I've personally spoken to Dragoneer about this issue before, WHY THE HELL is this suddenly NOT allowed?
THIS IS NOT OUTLINED IN THE AUP.
I AM REALLY SICK OF THIS BACK AND FORTH CIRCLEJERK.
I demand some strict, concise guidelines about this WRITTEN DOWN. I'm SICK of this ambiguous he said she said bullshit about this issue.
It's maddening!
I also personally do not see how it would pose a 'threat' to viewers mature enough to go looking for it and/or finding it, even if previews are set up with warning signs saying "caution: taxidermy inside" or something equivalent.
Just my two cents. :) I've seen wet-specimen taxidermy here for at least a few years now, and there's never been an issue before. I would like to hear Dragoneer's stance on the issue. Thanks for listening.
This position I outlined has come from more senior staff than myself, and does reflect what we are meant to enforce. I have requested that a true definition of what taxidermy is allowed be added to the AUP, because obviously there has been a fair bit of confusion on the matter.
You're just telling me they're not allowed, which while being news to me STILL doesn't answer my question either.
I am looking into this further to see if I can get clarification on the matter.
It is pretty obvious that the issue is settled in FA policy that wet preservation is not by their definition taxidermy no matter what was said to anybody from the top. Yeah it is a bunch of BS and sucks, but its their rules no matter how retarded it is to the people who take the time and effort to preserve animals for the enjoyment of others.
And frankly, as much as everybody affected might want to know, they do not have to give an answer as to why the policy is the way it is. At the same time their collective dodging of the question makes me distrust them all the more as I seriously question their sense of "justice" and concept of customer/community service.
And normally, I don't have a problem with the way this place is run and enforced. I LOVE this site, I spend tons and tons of time on it.
I really wouldn't be so mad if I hadn't spoken to Dragoneer and other admins in the past about this and it was A-OK for all that time and now suddenly it's not?
It just doesn't make sense.
if you need a phone, and you have the posibility to buy an Smartphone, you'll whant the smartphone, its the same!!
I mean, the only thing I whant is an app that notice me whenever I recive a comment, PM or whatever and gives me the psoibility to reply quickly! (these could be very usefull for auctions...) is that too hard to make? xD
Oh c'mon!!! how many furries are in FA? there must be some developers over here, by the way, we are a community (a big one).
And if the money is the problem, ask for donations, or something, say "hey guys we need money for Blah Blah Blah!" (monkeys used to dance for money, and developers used to work for it x3), there are lots of ways for making money in that case.
And i'm sure thet there will be peolple that will whant to work for free, just because they luv the site.
Wow! .... ok... I didn't knew that, that explains lots of things... xD
Also, double post.
It was actually about when an API would be ready, even if its a tentative answer.
Are you still obtaining admins, and do I still have a chance?
But a mobile version of the site is on our "wish list"
i wish tickets could be answered in a few mins because harassment is annoying as hell, but i know that's a bit hard with a backlog and not as much staff.
and whomg, sheepdust! XD i am glad i wasn't the only one else who noticed that!
So, this time, the site itself ain't the problem.
I have no other words for it than it being more-or less a side effect of the scraping prevention tool.
Since those users didn't knowingly cause that many requests (assuming that's the case), they can appeal their suspension by mailing to the address provided on the suspension notice.
Siterip tools like that significantly slow down the site, that's why we have means to detect and block them. The problem is that this tool has also hit normal users that used badly developed apps.
I wouldn't be surprised if Inkbunny / Sofurry / Deviantart / You name it, has similar systems in place, though.
Please look up the apps' pages, and familiarize yourself with them before criticising us for something that's simply not true.
Welcome to the beginning of the end of FurAffinity. The final bell has tolled with this news of ban-happy admins going crazy again.
